I love volunteering at the Heard Museum! I feel like I make a big difference in the community because its a Wildlife Sanctuary. They are able to provide a home for species such as deer, bats, foxes, birds and way more! If the Heard Museum wasn't here in McKinney I think McKinney would be less "Unique By Nature" as the cities motto goes, and have a stuffy big city feel instead. Save the Bees! Save the Monarchs! The Heard Museum can help!
The Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary is a beacon in the midst of the hustle and bustle of outer city suburbia. Despite the daily growth of McKinney, Allen, Plano, Dallas and all other surrounding cities, the Heard Museum stands as a testament of times when Nature was held as important for the community and not just a means of expanding housing additions. This Museum provides a hands on practical means of educating the next generation of scientists, teachers, explorers, and more. The exhibits throughout the inner museum feed the curiosity of young and old alike, providing fun interactive displays that people of all ages can make use of. The hiking trails allow for views of wildlife, foliage, and more, all while opening the eyes and minds of the visitors that places like these are disappearing faster than can be believed. Many native and a few exotic animals are found on display at this museum as well, allowing guests to see the importance that the Heard and other Wildlife Sanctuaries play in housing them. Here people can learn about so much! Many schools in the area make use of the Museum as a means of educating the students, as they are able to touch, read, and see with their own eyes what they would otherwise only see in their textbooks, making what was just imaginary suddenly very real.
