I was the girl that was gonna die from addiction. I was the girl that had lost all hope, or did not feel any human connection or compassion for anyone. When I showed up for the first time at the Healing House in 2010 I was very angry, ungrateful, and small minded. I definitely was not done yet either. I hate to admit that my story with the Healing House does not begin with me getting the message right away. In fact it took MANY years of falling on my face and being helped back up by the family that I had built here. Although I was in recovery I was not living recovery and thats where my troubles would always stem from. The things I was taught about life and doing the next right thing stayed with me though. The love, especially the love is how healing house became the most significant thing that has happened to me up to that point in my life. It has been 11 years now since the moment I showed up and the type of love I feel for this ministry is unexplainable. Im married now. I have a small child I am raising. I just left a job that I have been with for a long time to come and work for the same place that saved my life a million times over. I feel very strongly that God has set my whole life up for this to happen in the way it has. I will continue to step out in faith and give back as much as was given to me.
I was in my mid thirties and had given up on life. I sent my 1 year old son to live with his dad because living with me wasn't what was best for him. I was so deep into addiction that I wanted to go to sleep and MEVER wake up! I had no desire to live! None! The only reason I didn't commit suicide was because I felt like I'd already done enough damage to my son and didn't want him spending the rest of his life thinking "my mom killed herself because she didn't love me enough ". I went to treatment in late 2012. I was accepted into Healing House and I've been clean & sober since 11-21-12. I have a life worth living!!! HH taught me so many things. To name a few (because I could go on & on) to cook & clean, to help others with nothing in return, service work, I don't have to have drugs to feel good, life is better with a clear mind, that God is a God of restoration. Since being at HH & giving my entire self to this program, my life is more magical and fulfilling than I'd ever imagined! My son trusts me, he believes I'm the best mom in the world and he is proud of me! My family finally got their Julie back, I have a great job, I'm married to the man of my dreams, I have my own home (even a dog)!! I moved out in May of 2019 because I was married in July. We live just a couple blocks from HH because we wanted to stay involved. We lead a NA meeting there on Wednesday and we're involved in the Friday night Alpha program. Healing House saved my life!!!!!

November 27th 2012 I decided to do something different. I was an active drug addict, had sent my son to live with his dad, had no car, no job & no desire to live. I was addicted to drugs and even though my drug of choice was opiots, I would take anything I could get my hands on. I wanted to go to sleep & NEVER wake up. I got to Healing House in December of 2012. I was terrified, I am a country girl, born & raised in Urich Missouri, population 505. They say we have to change our playmates & playgrounds, but even that isn't exactly why I moved to KC. God led me here. I didn't know that until much later in my journey. At HH I did what was suggested and I mirrored the ones who had long term sobriety. They had what I wanted & I began to fight for a new life. It didn't happen overnight but Praise the Lord... it did happen! Today I have nearly 7 years completely drug & alcohol free. I have a life more beautiful and glorious than I ever knew was a possibility for someone like me. I lived in the Healing House as a House Manager for nearly 6.5 years. I recently moved out on my own & was married July 20th. We live just a few blocks away & still spend at least two nights a week there. They are our family. My husband, who was also a house manager, is a new person because of what HH taught him. My relationship with my son Dawson is absolutely beyond amazing & I am a wonderful mother! I am a good friend, a great daughter, sister, friend & employee. I have a profound relationship with Jesus Christ. I am everything I always wished to be & plenty more!!!!!
I came from prison to the Healing House. They taught me a new way of life! Im now have almost 4 years clean! I've successfully completed parole, im a voter, I have a career, im happily married and a good mother. A successful contributing member of society! Healing House taught me how to be all those things! And most importantly I formed a relationship with God ! Thank you Healing House!
I have been involved with Healing House since 2009. During that time, I have seen many men and women change the direction their lives were going, to becoming good parents, productive citizens, and engaged in helping others.
These men and women are not only changing the direction their lives were taking, but changing the lives of those around them and making our community a better place to live.
I was welcomed into the Healing House "family" almost 7 years ago as a facilitator for the Christian based ALPHA program. Immediately I became aware of residents conscious and heartfelt desire to connect with and create a relationship with God. Their desire to be in a relationship with God was not based on earthly wants or needs but rather a sense of surrender. In understanding that there is forgiveness, grace and strength to those who surrender their lives to God, my brothers and sisters at Healing House have found new hope in their road to recovery from addiction. Watching these people, most of which are hardened by the streets, become vulnerable and confessing their weaknesses made me realize that I too am in need of God's grace and forgiveness daily. We are all broken sinners. There is no judgement, just real discussions about life, the freedom from addiction with God's guidance and His ultimate grace and forgiveness when we all come before him and acknowledge our brokenness. My Healing House family has taught me how to love, trust and dig deeper into my faith. Seeing what God has done for so many of the residents at Healing House has inspired me to become much more transparent in my daily life and to thoughtfully seek out a deeper relationship with our God.
When I first began at Healing House I thought I was the one bringing value to the residents through my leadership. It didn't take long for me to become humbled, realizing that together, we were bringing value to each other weekly as a family of God, centered around an environment of forgiveness, encouragement and relationship building.
In God's Hands,

I can’t imagine a greater non-profit than the Healing House in Kansas City. They are making a meaningful impact to people who are hurting, and to the community where they reside. I have been spending Friday evenings there since 2010, volunteering as a small group discussion leader in the Alpha program. My own story and the story of the organization and its founders requires more space than this review would allow so I encourage anyone looking for either a place to help or a place to invest or both, to check it out. From a quote by Kahlil Gibran, “I slept and I dreamed that life is all joy. I woke and I saw that life is all service. I served and I saw that service is joy.” When I was invited to help at the Healing House, I became part of the family, and found the meaning of joy.
I was introduced to Healing House on October 13, 2010 when I came down to help set up for a band from our church that was playing for the residents that night. I am in recovery from alcohol addiction and immediately felt at home with the residents and staff of the organization. I felt so strongly about Healing House that I ultimately started an Alpha program there that has been running meetings every Friday night since January 2011. I also lead a men's meeting on Tuesday with 70 people regularly attending. I also serve on the board as director of recovery. I say this to let you know my life has been changed by the people and staff of Healing House. It is a faith based recovery ministry that has extremely low overhead and is a grass roots ministry. We don't have fancy offices or buildings. All of our houses have been purchased out of foreclosure or were abandoned and we renovated and turned them into beautiful houses. We don't have high salaried staff or board members who are seeking personal recognition. Most of the staff are residents of Healing House. People who have successfully beaten their addiction and are giving back to the ministry. The Healing House organization is truly a blessing to many people and is a part of my personal recovery. I love the organization with all my heart.
I have been in the corporate world for my entire 30 year professional career. For a 2 year period of time I analyzed business cases for funding priority. If the Healing House wanted to make money they have about the worst business case I have ever seen. A customer base that is largely broke, often homeless, primarily ex-convicts and 99% are recovering addicts and alcoholics.
However, if their business plan was to find the lost sheep and lead them back to the safety of the pen; if the goal was to give a hand (physically, spiritually and emotionally) to recovering addicts, they have one of the best business cases I have seen, as demonstrated by their high recovery rate.
I have lived here and witnessed acts of heroic kindness and true miracles. Please support them in any way that you can.
