Healing Hearts does amazing work in our community. Going above and beyond for a myriad of equines in need. Their efforts to provide a soft landing, tender care, and medical attention have saved so many lives.

I happened upon Healing Hearts Animal Rescue and Refuge on Instagram. I was searching for a local organization that loved horses as much as I have. I called and asked if I could come visit and Donna was so welcoming. I toured the facility and got to be introduced to each “resident”. I was impressed by all the rescue workers that do NOT take their contribution to the rescue and rehabilitation to the residents lightly. Needless to say I signed up IMMEDIATELY to volunteer and although there are rescues closer to my home none of them have shown the same heart for this sometimes difficult work.

Healing Hearts Animal Sanctuary is truly an amazing organization, with even more amazing staff and volunteers. With their love and kindness, a wonderful horse (who I cared for after his owner became sick) was adopted to a new home. I truly believe this is one of the best run non-profit animal rescues in the country.

I have followed this organization for a long time. I have friends who recommended them as a non-profit as well, and know someone who has adopted from them too, all singing great praise. My observation is that this is an extremely well run charity, with great compassion and love for equines, but also having the good business sense necessary to be successful as a non-profit. I know they have very loyal and dedicated staff and volunteers, which speaks volumes!

Healing Hearts Animal Sanctuary really brings you into the daily life of the animals in their care with photos and updates. I actually feel very close to all of their animals, including new arrivals, and look forward to the daily connection. It’s uplifting to see how much they are loved and get to know their personalities. Popsicle time is fun!

I have done volunteer work for Healing Hearts for 2 years now, and they are a wonderful organization to work with. Saving horses is their number one priority, and they help so many animals that would not have a chance otherwise. Their ranch is beautiful and the horses are well cared for! From the moment I stepped into Healing Hearts Animal Sanctuary, I could feel the love and dedication that goes into caring for each animal. Tucked away in a peaceful rural setting, this place is a true haven for animals in need. It’s clear that their mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide lifelong homes is taken to heart, especially for those animals that might not have a chance anywhere else.

While it’s not the largest sanctuary I’ve visited, its smaller size gives it a special, intimate feel. You can see the individualized care each animal receives, and the clean, well-maintained facilities show how much effort goes into making it a comfortable, safe place. For me, Healing Hearts truly captures the essence of what a sanctuary should be—a place where every animal is valued and nurtured.

I was frantically reaching out to multiple rescues, sanctuaries, and programs trying to find a soft landing for two large horses at an auction/kill pen. These days, there are too many animals and not enough safe places - especially huge ones. Healing Hearts stepped right up! No questions asked. They are true gladiators for good! I actually cried tears (and that is not me) when they said they could help raise funds to transport them to their care. I cannot speak highly enough about the care that these hearts put into non-profit!

When I retired from teaching, I decided to get back to my roots - being around horses.
In my journey, I have volunteered at 5 different horse farms. My last one was where I found my home - Healing Hearts Animal Rescue. Their horse rescue facility, staff and volunteers ticked all of my wants for a dream volunteer position.
They provide vet services, farrier needs, supplements, clean water, exercise, but most importantly, LOVE!
I have witnessed rescues that were malnourished, ill, lame or just scared transform into kind and loving companions.
They are able to do this over and over again. But it comes at a price. They not only invest their time but rely on the generosity of others to keep them afloat.
They never think of the monetary investment, but rather the welfare of a horse in need.

I started volunteering at Healing Hearts because I was told I should get experience with horses prior to entering vet school. Healing Hearts puts a lot of time and effort into each of the horses in their care. Horses that were sent to kill pens often have medical issues that Healing Hearts pays a lot of money to provide the best vet care. Horses that were thrown away by previous owners are transformed into healthy, happy horses that lead long, wonderful lives. Everyone talks about how intimidating horses can be but I have not found that to be the case at Healing Hearts. Volunteering at Healing Hearts, even if you’re mucking stalls, is like free therapy. The horses understand they were given a new chance at life and seem appreciative. Some of the horses even act like giant puppies. Donna and the other employees that run the rescue really love what they do and always let us know how thankful they are that we volunteer. I wish I lived closer and didn’t work as much so I could volunteer more often.

The amount of care the staff and each volunteer gives the horses is impressive. They use their funds wisely to try to provide the absolute best individual care for each horse. On top of that the team works so hard to foster and create new relationships with vets, trainers, massage therapist, and volunteers so they can meet the needs of each horse. My favorite horse there is Charlie, he came from a kill pen. Like many of the others he was undernourished with several physical injuries and a lot of fear. Even after what he has been through his first instinct is to try what ever you are asking of him. He is such a kind and willing quarter horse that it's impossible not to connect with him. Whoever adopts him with patience will be able to develop a once in lifetime bond, charlie is the kind of horse that would follow his person anywhere. He truly is a special horse and I have been lucky enough to work with him all thanks to healing hearts.

I cannot say enough about how much I love Healing Hearts. I was new to rescuing horses and decided to try to help a couple of Thoroughbred yearlings who ended up in a kill pen. I asked many rescues if they would take them if I bailed them out and got many no's. Until I asked Healing Hearts and without hesitation, they said yes. Then they said yes to four more horses who were bailed out that same day and took in all six! I was overwhelmed by their willingness to do this. They have taken amazing care of all of them, found wonderful homes for them and have allowed me to participate in their care. THIS is what RESCUE is all about!!

I found HHR and the ranch manager & a volunteer dropped everything to drive to the farthest side of town and picked up this sweet, sassy, little horse. They found her a great forever home. The volunteers work well together and the animals are extremely lucky to receive the love & care that they do on a daily basis. I have been amazed what these wonderful people are able to do for some of the most abused and neglected horses I have ever seen. From taking in horses from Havasupai (the luckier ones who make it out), to wild babies, to horses that humans have treated like trash, starved and abused, they all find food, love and recovery here. Definitely one of the best charities out there.

I can't count the number of times I have gone from crying in horror/sadness, to tears of joy, after watching Healing Hearts do their magic. What a great thing to see animals that have been neglected or abused to the literal ends of their lives, come alive when they have enough of everything. To see their personalities emerge once they know they are going to survive is a gift. There is so much need here in Arizona where there is so much rural ground to cover, and so much really awful abuse, and Healing Hearts has brought relief to so many animals I can't even count.

I discovered Healing Hearts in December 2019 after I purchased my dream ranch. I was looking for a herd of rescue animals to adopt and fulfill the vision as 4 legged surrogates to healing for humans. So far, we'd adopted two pot bellied pigs, a pair of dward goat brothers, an Appaloosa Mare and Draft Mule Mare. My heart overflows everyday for the gift these animals bring into my life.

I am forever grateful to Jennifer, the Executive Director and the ranch team who continually pour love and best rehabilitation to the rescues in need. I am continually impressed by the professionalism, care, attention to detail and advocacy this Charity represents.

I love to support them in any way I can, and I'm sure will adopt more animals down the track.

Friendly volunteers and wonderful programs (Books in the Barn, local community college trainees etc) that further help foster a sense of community. Well run establishment and proper volunteer orientation / trainings, to keep everyone safe. Horse adoption available for those experienced enough to take one on. Healing Hearts does a good job of welcoming volunteers but at the same time honors the fact the care of the horses come first. They make sure everyone is safe, especially those who don't have much equine experience. A wonderful place, providing a true sanctuary to horses who need it.

I started volunteering at Healing Hearts 16 months ago and have seen how Healing Hearts has changed not only the lives of many unwanted, neglected or abused horses but my life as well.

I first heard about Healing Hearts a few months after the Covid crisis had begun and I had been furloughed from my job in the hospitality/resort business. We had some very bad summer fires in our tight knit community of Cave Creek in the beginning of the summer. Many residents here own horses and so many homes needed to be evacuated due to the fire. People needed a safe haven for their horses. Healing Hearts immediately opened their gates and hearts for as many horses as they could take in. They received quite a few calls also from people who had adopted their horses from Healing Hearts in the past and knew their facility and quality of care they offered to their horses.

Healing Hearts needed volunteers to help muck and groom all the additional horses they took in to provide a safe haven during the fire and that is when I first volunteered. And the rest is history.

I was furloughed for 14 months and it was quite the adjustment going from a fast paced, workaholic lifestyle to the brakes being slammed on. Add on the social isolation of the pandemic and a major financial adjustment with going on unemployment which I never in my life thought I would need to do…it was a whole new world. Healing Hearts helped to heal me by volunteering….falling in love with horses…seeing the great work the rescue was doing…finding a purpose…meeting kind, caring people with a passion for what they do. Making a difference one horse at a time.

Healing Hearts does fantastic work. They take in horses that people no longer wanted for whatever reason, giving neglected and abused horses a loving and safe refuge to heal physically and emotionally. Their vets, farriers and dentists are top notch sharing the vision of Healing Hearts. The executive team and Board always put the horses first and it shows in the level of care they receive and in their charity/donation efforts. Social media is a wonderful way for them to reach out to share a horses story and the reality of what life can be like for them and all the hard work, time and money it takes to provide the level of care they need and deserve. But it is the passion…the love of horses…striving to heal them & work with them so they can be adopted to their perfect forever home. Much work and research goes into finding the best fit for the horse-not just an adoption-but what is the best fit for the horse and potential adopter.

The ranch manager puts her heart and soul into caring for the horses & training volunteers in how to work with horses. Personally, I have learned so much in the time I have been there and am now a lead volunteer! Even though my schedule is more limited in which to volunteer because I am back to work, I still find time to do 5:30am shifts or dinner feeds plus the weekends. It is my second home.

Every animal deserves a safe and loving home. The horses of Healing Hearts get that plus more. Training, personalized diets and medical treatments, farrier service on a regular basis, turn out time with other horses for exercise and play, grooming and lots of love. Often, I see the soul of the horse in their eyes and it is heartwarming to make that connection.

Healing Hearts has compassion for the horses. Some have a long road to recovery and we are with them every step of the way. Some have been given up due to financial problems or family problems, others have been neglected and abused. We have former Olympic jumpers, Fresians, american cream draft horses, thoroughbreds, ex-racing horses, mustangs, abandoned BLM horses, ponies or from the reservation…it does not matter. What matters is that they needed a home and an opportunity for a second chance & to find their new forever home. Or if you just need a place to peacefully live out your final years…Healing Hearts is here for them.

“Give me your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty. I feel this should be inscribed at Healing Hearts as they are a beacon of hope where all are welcome.

I’ve been aware of healing hearts for a few years now. I’ve become familiar with some of the horses (and other animals) that are rescued. Some of the cases that I am aware of are so tragic. If Healing Hearts was not around, these animals would suffer to the very end. Instead, they are given the best care, be it medical, proper nutrition, proper housing and love and care. These animals must feel so safe once they are in the care of Healing Hearts. There are many animal rescues but none compare with the quality of care that Healing Hearts provides.

I have been a volunteer for HH since 2012. The spirit of HH is its founder Betty Whelton. Betty is and always will be a hero to us and we are fulfilling her dreams by rescuing these beautiful animals. Our Executive Director, Jennifer Brumbaugh runs things with highly efficient use of resources and sees to it the staff and animals have everything they need. This has required extraordinary talent at times.

As for day to day working at HH, yes at times it is hard work, but not really, the rewards more than compensate. The whole thing goes smoothly thanks to General Manager Amanda Rider. Amanda has an easy way about her that causes everything to run smoothly. She only calls on me for jobs that need doing. Thus at the end of my stint I feel I have made a valuable contribution. Amanda has made this the best volunteer activity I have experienced.

All in all my family and I do all we can for HH and will continue to do so for many years to come. ❤️

I have known of this nonprofit since it's President & Founder, Betty Walton (whom I've never met but know of from when she was CEO at Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL)), started Healing Hearts. When she was CEO at AAWL I was very impressed with what she did with that organization. I've adopted five animals from AAWL in the last 25 years - before, during and after Betty's tenure there.

Fast forward to January, 2020. I needed to rehome my three horses, (two (minis) of which I adopted from Healing Hearts August, 2019) due to medical issues. I contacted Healing Hearts and talked with Amanda McCoy, Ranch Manager, and Jennifer Brumbaugh, Executive Director, about my situation. They listened to me with compassion as I cried through the conversations; they promised to find my mares (one QH and two minis) the perfect homes. My biggest concern and why I waited so long to contact Healing Hearts is that I loved my mares so much and wanted to make sure they would go to people who would love them and care for them the way I had done. So, on January 27th, my horses, horse trailer, tack, hay, supplements, supplies, etc. went to Healing Hearts. I visited my girls several times before they were adopted out - to the perfect homes, as promised. I met the adopter of my QH and liked her - most importantly, my QH mare really liked her. I've visited my (former) QH mare in her new home and could not be happier. The minis went to an equine therapy organization - again, I am so happy.

I cannot say enough great things about Healing Hearts. Amanda and Jen are amazing. The others I met at Healing Hearts are also amazing. Just a wonderful group of people who love animals and have such compassion. The facility is beautiful - clean, well-kept - and the animals want for nothing. They have adequate feed, supplements, veterinary care, hoof care and are trained/re-trained/exercised according to their abilities. The animals' physical and mental/emotional needs are met and they just blossom under Amanda's care. Great care is taken to find the best homes for the animals.

The latest awesome activity at Healing Hearts is taking in livestock from the recent Cave Creek fires. They will keep the animals until the owners can rebuild their homes/barns. This group of people at Healing Hearts just never stops doing great things for animals and people!

My gratitude for what they did for me, what they do for the rescues and surrenders they've taken in, and what they continue to do in helping the community, is just overwhelming. This is a top-notch non-profit and scores 10 out of 10 in every category with me!

Healing Hearts has not only saved the lives of many animals, it has saved my life, too. Horses have always been my first love, but I have never been able to have my own horse. Throughout my life, I have looked for places to ride, and have been able to do some, thanks to some wonderful guest ranches and local riding companies. I grew up here in Arizona, but moved away many years ago to pursue work opportunities. When I moved back home here in 2011, I began looking for some sort of volunteer activity that would lead me to working with horses. One day, when I was searching the internet, I found the website for Healing Hearts. I contacted Amanda Rider, met her a few days later, and Healing Hearts has been my "home" now for a few years. This wonderful place is my sanctuary, as well as a sanctuary for all of the beloved animals that have passed through Healing Hearts and onto better lives. Healing Hearts Animal Sanctuary is truly the definition of love!

Healing Hearts is an exceptional nonprofit organization. They do an amazing job of taking care of the animals, educating the community, and building lasting relationships where both parties thrive. Jen, the ED is available at anytime to help with the rescue of an animal, assisting her staff and just hanging out on the property to lend some extra TLC. They go the extra mile to make sure the care and safety of the animals always takes priority!! We are so fortunate to have them in our community caring for the sweet animals that need and deserve it most!

I adopted Mila from healing hearts and it was the best decision I ever made!! They do an amazing job with rescue and rehabilitation!! The only reason Mila is alive is because healing hearts took a chance on these emaciated little foals that came from the drought, and nursed them back to life! Thank you Amanda, Stephanie and Jennifer!! ❤️

I have been following this rescue for 4 years. I have many friends that have adopted from them and adore the new family members. I have personally seen how hard the people work at this rescue. They truly are there to fight for the animals.

Healing Hearts Animal Sanctuary is a wonderful organization that stops at nothing to provide a safe and loving place for neglected animals. They have been there to help in some of the most severe cases of animal abuse from speaking to law makers, giving interviews to better inform the general public and most importantly taking in these animals to rehabilitate them. I have attended multiple events hosted by Healing Hearts to help raise awareness as well as funding to help support this amazing cause. I believe in what this organization sets out to achieve and will continue to support them in the future!

I was told about Healing Hearts in 2016 by a mutual friend. After purchasing a hobby farm I was looking for animals to adopt and rescues were my preference. Coco and Marshmallow were recently brought to healing hearts at that time and we went to visit the animals and visit the Santuary. The staff and volunteers were so incredibly welcoming and you could tell how much each and every one of them loved and cared for all their rescues! After we adopted Coco and Marshmallow, the following year I attended the Healing Hearts charity event and the Shetland Pony Lina was the guest of honor. Spending about 45 minutes with this beautiful animal she just had to come home with me and we ended up adopting Lina as well. Healing Hearts was so caring and concerned about the animals to make sure they were healthy and were going to the right home. We have adopted 3 of our animals from healing hearts and if I had more space I would adopt more! They are incredible people doing incredible things and I am grateful and blessed to now call them my friends as well!

Several years ago I was fortunate enough meet Jennifer and Betty from Healing Hearts when I helped them by fostering 3 horses for a few months. The care and concern for all their animals is sincere and they work incredibly hard to find great, forever homes for their rescues.

I have been donating time and money to this great organization for years, even though I live on another state now. I highly recommend Healing Hearts Animal Rescue and Refuge to anyone who wants to make an impact in saving horses!

While reading a post on FaceBook back on March 16,2018 I saw a posting about a momma cat who had given birth to some newborn kittens - problem
Being , momma has them outside of Oreganos pizza, in a decorative car that they have out front !
People were concerned that since there were many activities
In Cave Creek the next day , the momma might become lost, confused or taken and her kittens would die.
I followed the post that evening as was so excited to learn that Healing Hearts has stepped in to rescue momma and her babies !
I contacted them a few days later and was invited out to
Visit their new additions .
We immediately fell in love with one of them and expressed our desire to adopt this kitten when they were ready /. We visited the kittens weekly , decided that they would be happier being adopted with a sibling! So yesterday , 6/1/18 we picked up
Both Jack and Diane!
We could not be happier . The level of care and compasion given to all of the rescue horses , goats, bunnies and kittens is truly heart warming .
