Review from Guidestar
It is hard to describe how outstanding this organization really is. It started out with individuals who literally needed the most basic of basics, a meal. Abraham Israel started feeding them, more and more came, he expanded his work.
Many of the beneficiaries are older, many are Holocaust survivors who never readapted well, others are mistreated wives. Abraham saw that they had more needs than just food. A free clothing "store", free dental work (you can't eat well if your teeth are bad), vocational training. This helps the younger women in particular, who can take a short, practical course, get work, and support their children instead of lining up for meals. Break the cycle of povery.
Hazon Yeshaya reaches out to everyone. It has distribution points wherever they're needed. National origin and religion mean nothing to this charity. They serve ultra-Orthodox and secular, Jews and Arabs. And they do it with care and respect, even with a bit of panache.
Hazon Yeshaya is known as being the largest soup kitchen in Israel. But in reality it is so, so ,so much more than this. It is charity that supports the poorest of Israel's poor, regardless of their age, gender or race. Hazon Yeshaya fights poverty and hunger and aims to give individuals the tools to get out of the poverty trap and regain their dignity. Hazon Yeshaya provides life-saving support to Israel's neediest children, elderly and vulnerable citizens, by serving 15,000 hot, nutritious meals every day; the majority of which go to children. This equates to c 450,000 meals each month. Assistance is provided 365 days a year, including Shabbat and Jewish holidays, because hunger knows no holidays. Hazon Yeshaya also works hard to break the poverty cycle by providing vocational training courses and other educational programs. Enabling individuals to learn a skill which enables them to earn a living and lift themselves out of the poverty trap is at the core of what Hazon Yeshaya does. In addition, the charity provides social services such as free clothing, dental treatment and nursery school education.
I know a lot about the charity because I am a great supporter of their great work and, with my family, have volunteered at their premises in Jerusalem. Volunteer with them at one of their many locations in Israel and Hazon Yeshaya will forever be in your heart and mind.
On my recent trip to Israel I was extremely impressed by the work done by Hazon Yeshaya in helping the poor. Anyone from a first world country who visits would be surprised at the numbers of people lining up to receive their daily hot meal from this institution.
While I was there I was shown the free dental clinic with its first class, modern equipment.
But to me, what is even more impressive is the vocational training that Hazon Yeshaya offers (also free to clients) that helps people, who may have never had to opportunity to earn a living, to train in a field where they will hopefully be able to support themselves. In fact some people who previously relied on hot meals did training and are now volunteering at Hazon Yeshaya themselves. I was fortunate in meeting one such woman who had done the hairdressing course and now is able to work from home.
A truly wonderful organisation which is unfortunately vital today.
