Causes: Chambers of Commerce & Business Leagues
Mission: The association's mission is to perteptuate, and facilitate, the existence of the historic haymarket pushcart vendors who have existed in the boston downtown area for more than three hundred years. Haymarket pushcart association serves as the primary liason with government agencies, the press and the general public for the historic haymarket areas and the vendors. The association also works to promote the historic and commercial aspects of the haymarket district by generating goodwill with the general public, other nonprofit organizations using the rose kennedy greenway and other merchants in the proximate area. The association keeps members informed of legal matters and commercial developments effecting the pushcart vendors, and, in turn, represents the vendors before these other groups.
Programs: The association is the primary liason with local government agencies and the press for the haymarket pushcart vendors. After the completion of the central artery project, this still remains an important function. Incomplete and ongoing construction projects continue to disrupt or redirect vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the historic haymarket area. Because a number of legal matters were left unresolved, and the ownership and availablility of other parcels is still ambiguous, various projects, groups and interests are competing to claim parts of the available open and green spaces. The association continues to work with local officials advocating to establish a specific, permanent area for the exclusive use of the pushcart vendors. The association continues to advocate for the vendors in matters relating to permitting, licensing, health and safety for the vendors and their patrons.
