Mission: Our Mission is to conduct sound research to better understand the health and status of our marine resources and how better to preserve them. These findings are communicated to members of the community, empowering them with the knowledge to create effective policies, raise awareness, and ultimately change behavior to ensure our current and future generations prosper from the economic and social benefits provided by healthy and abundant marine resources.
Target demographics: the enviroment, the ocean, the marine life ecosystem
Geographic areas served: Maui, Hawaii
Programs: HAMER offers the scientific expertise to carry out field research on marine animals. This includes marine mammal stock assessment research as well as other investigative research on the biology and behavior of marine animals and their habitat. We also offer training and education services about marine mammals, research methodology, conservation, and current research findings.
I have been helping HAMER with Manta Ray ID for a while now. I applaud Mark and his staff for their efforts to help protect and better understand Hawaiian marine life as well as being an active advocate for the marine environment and community leader in marine education. A true champion for those that can't protect themselves.
Various members of HAMER's board have been very active in environmental impact issues by personally testifying at the county level to ban polystyrene use in Maui County to preventing developers from building residential projects that use sceptic systems vs using more efficient waste water treatment solutions. We can no longer think that what we do on land does not impact our ocean and reef ecosystems. The ocean is not as infinite as we think it is. Having people like those on the HAMER team voicing these concerns and succeeding are critical to proper ocean protection and awareness.
