Ms. Abrantes and Ms. Davis are outstanding teachers. It is clear that they truly enjoy working with each and every child in that classroom, but somehow always manage to make us feel that our daughter is special to them. They take time to write complete reports on her activities each day and have even gone out of their way in the past to call us when our daughter has done something particularly funny or remarkable. They always greet our family with a smile and are happy to see us every time we drop her off, regardless of how busy they are. It's that type of personal attention that makes us feel completely at ease leaving her in their hands. In addition to Abrantes and Davis , everyone at Harriet Tubman Aftercare have been wonderful to work with. We are very happy with our experience there. There is no other child care center that we would rather take our daughter to. We have recommended to our friends and neighbors and will continue to do so.
We have been part of the Harriet Tubman Aftercare family for over five years and the groups of individuals are working caring, professional and dedicated. Ms. Pearlie Kilgore has done a wonderful job making the aftercare program an inviting and successful child care center. Thank you so much for your responsiveness, attention to detail and support over the years. We cannot imagine how we could have coped without knowing that our older son Takeem was and now Angel is in a safe, fun place every day. What they have learned at Harriet Tubman, as well as the warmth and respect that they were and are shown, has enabled my children to be outgoing, independent and respectful of others. We are so proud of them and thankful Harriet Tubman Aftercare teachers and directors for their continual help and guidance over the years.
For most parents, it’s not always easy to prepare you children for state testing. Work, stress and life issues always cause a barrier for your children during test times. Harriet Tubman Aftercare has a framework which fosters test preparations and makes children more comfortable with taking test in general. Every Friday, the second graders of Harriet Tubman PTO Aftercare are given practice NJ ASK tests. Ms. Dent and Ms. Robinson make sure that the classroom’s atmosphere is arranged as if the students were taking the NJ ASK. The students are given one section of the NJ ASK each Friday and timed for each section. After the students take the tests, the tests are scored using the scoring rubric of the NJ ASK. Ms. Carol then goes over any questions the students might not have understood and explains and shows how to get the correct answer. The tests are also put into a folder for each student and given to the parent at the end of the year. In the folder is also a copy of the scoring rubric of the NJ ASK so they can see where the child needs improvement as well as what their child is proficient at. Ms. Carol does this so that the students will be prepared next year when they take the test. She also stated that this will help the students be ahead next year and with giving the parents their child’s folders, it can help the parents understand the scoring and where their child was and how their child has improved. During the week, after the students are done with their homework they work independently on reading comprehension and math workbooks that are provided to them. These workbooks ask questions in the form of how the NJ ASK’s questions are. These workbooks are checked and explained to the student how to get the right answer as well. When some of the students were asked why they like taking the practice test, their responses were: “It makes me prepare for and ready for next year” I would highly recommend this aftercare program to everyone. My daughter has learned a lot and wants to talk everyday about what she has learned for the day and how nice the ladies are that worked there.
To describe the environment at Harriet Tubman Aftercare use the words: family, friendly, academic, structured, dedicated, and safe. The curriculum was focused on learning while having fun from the Pre-K through 6th grade. Harriet Tubman Aftercare program has provided Josiah and Amber with a solid core fundamental academic foundation. The repetition of the daily routine built confidence and promoted leadership in both of our children. The thing we feel is most significant is the dedicated staff. The early childhood teachers and staff are always positive and looking for ways to continually improve and educate the children
I wanted to take a moment to let your organization know what a great job you are doing with the aftercare located at Harriet Tubman School. I truly appreciate it! We joined Harriet Tubman Aftercare about two years ago and felt so welcomed into the community right away! Your wonderful smiles are great to see each morning we come in. I don't know how you do it but you are always in a wonderful mood! I know that Al-Tariq is in a loving and safe environment and that is the best feeling any parent whose child is in child care can have. You’ll are always ready to help with any questions I have and are always professional and kind. So, thank you Harriet Tubman Aftercare. I really do appreciate everything you do! I'm so happy AL-Tariq and I are a part of your community! A million thanks to you!
It is such a great feeling to know that our family has found aftercare program that is so loving and supportive of working families like us. Harriett Tubman PTO Aftercare has given our son excellent care! Their staff is so wonderful and encouraging to our family. Our whole experience has been very positive. The first call and the first visit, Ms. Nicole was very informative and welcomed all of our questions. The entire staff is so positive and treats everyone with great respect. You are greeted with a smile in the morning and the smell of warm food and greeted with a smile when you return. What a great place for children! Kudos to Harriet Tubman PTO Aftercare “KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK”
A vital aspect of our program is our commitment to multicultural and social justice education. We carefully create an environment that reflects not only the cultures of the families we serve but the world around us. We believe this validates children’s experiences, teaches the importance of valuing similarities and differences and builds the connection between home and school. Guiding children to accept and respect individual differences is an integral part of our program. We provide an inclusive learning environment through an engaging curriculum, service learning and by promoting respectful relationships. In our programs, school-age children will develop complex coordination skills, engage with peers, and practice group study. They will begin to express their goals and wishes as they seek self-identity and explore interests and behaviors in an age-appropriate way.

As a community member here in Central Ward of Newark, I want to acknowledge the extensive efforts of the Harriet Tubman Aftercare program located in Harriet Tubman Blue Ribbon School. My kids all attended this elementary school and their has always been positive comment made about this aftercare program. The Harriet Tubman Aftercare Program; a school age program that creates communities for children and their families that are fun, nurturing and enriching. Children are active learners and the before and after school programs provide an environment where children can safely grow through self-guided and structured play. In addition to fostering imagination, daily play challenges children to expand social, emotional and intellectual tools. The staff and director carefully plan the program to balance homework with exercise and promote healthy eating habits.
Having two kids, wife going to school full-time, it was very nice to know that there was an afterschool program out there that would help us with our child care needs. Harriet Tubman Aftercare has friendly caretakers that I can honestly say are my friends. We chose to enroll our daughter at Harriet Tubman Aftercare child care center because there is a very open line of communication between the staff and the parents, the staff themselves are very knowledgeable and into what each individual child's needs are, they're very flexible, and there is always a center director there to guide and answer any questions that you may have.

I am a Store Manager at Sebra Supermarket, a common grocery store in the Newark Community. Harriet Tubman Aftercare reached out to us in the fall of 2013, requesting donations for their non-profit enrichment program “Back to School Cookout” The assistant letter was so detailed and informative in the efforts for the cookout, we more than obliged to donate to such a good cause. I think a quote from the letter was “We feel the event will bring the community together in a positive manner”. The program was very well constructed with several different channels and options to learn more about the program without actually being in the building. I accessed their Facebook page which was full of events, and pictures showing the enrichment activities offered on a regular basis. The program was very grateful for the donations and personally invited our staff members to attend and enjoy the celebration. Overall the program is extremely beneficial to the community and most importantly the kids at Harriet Tubman Blue Ribbon School. We here at Sebra Supermarket are in close contact with Harriet Tubman Aftercare Program and look forward to doing business with them in the near future.
I had the pleasure of volunteering at Harriet Tubman Aftercare program, and I must their service is exceptional. They hosted the school’s 1st Annual Back to School cookout in September 2013, and it was a great success. With the help of donations from the community and parent support, the cookout was filled with food, games, and pertinent information about the program for the newcomers. The aftercare program is a gentle transition time from school to home. Children have the opportunity to read, finish homework, play board games and create artwork. Outside time and active games are also offered daily and the kids love it. The after school program curriculum is built around themes that are of interest to the children. Within each theme, there are opportunities for all children to explore and experience activities that are meaningful to them. The afternoon is a blend of child initiated and teacher initiated activities including outdoor play, afternoon snack, group time, homework and reading time. This program benefits the Central Ward community in so many ways and continues to get better each year.

I am a volunteer teacher in the Harriet Tubman Aftercare program for more than 10 years, and I’m always happy to help this organization in any way. When staff is low, I volunteer to take-over the 1st and 2nd graders and keep the program a-float with little hassle. The children are the best part of being an aftercare teacher! I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I have worked hard to ensure the children have a great learning environment to complement the curriculum, and then I see the children repeating things they've learned to their parents or anyone else who will listen. A memorable moment that means a lot to me is when I overheard a small group of children discussing a theme that we were learning. I stood back and thought "they really are listening" and "I really did get through to them." That is a moment that makes me feel like I had a positive impact on their educations and why I chose teaching in the first place. I love to make learning fun for children everyday but still challenging. Children give me energy and make me feel so much more alive. I hope that every child that enters my aftercare classroom, I somehow affect their life. Just to highlight some of the aspects I like most about the program is; Harriet Tubman stimulates your child to stay active. We try to build stamina through small- and large-group games; focus on endurance, balance, and strength during daily fitness activities; and promote the link between physical activity and proper nutrition in creating a healthy lifestyle. I have recommended this program to several of my peers and hope the community becomes more aware of how this program can become an asset to their lifestyle.
I am social worker in the Newark Division of Children and Families, futhermore I am a former client of Harriet Tubman Aftercare program and would recommend this program to anyone in need of effective child care. As a DFYS workers I observed the program as “People living together either related or not who care for and love one another.” The staff has a goal is to be inclusive of the groupings that constitute a family system and encourage children Teachers understand that each family may approach this topic in a unique way but the goal is to support these efforts in any way that they can. My son has attended Harriet Tubman Aftercare for five years. Through the enrichments activities my son, Yasir has made a strong positive change in school with his reading and math. My family appreciates the staff at Harriet Tubman for the way they have cared for Yasir as though he was family.

Rule #1 “Ask and you shall receive” Jaiden learned that the easy way. In the middle of arts projects Jaiden was eyeing chocolate on the counter and thrilled when his teacher, Ms. Thomas let him have just a bit. Joy quickly turned to comfort when he realized that he was eating chocolate, and not in trouble for simply asking. This is just one example how the enrichment classes Harriet Tubman Aftercare helped our son become the quizzical 4 year old he is today. The Pre-K classroom is very nurturing for the early childhood children and helps with their transition from preschool to school-age children. Not only does he have a better understanding of letters and sounds, but he can write his name, recognize letters and words, and has begun asking about how he can learn to read. Talk about great preparation for kindergarten and that's still more than a year away!

I am a 7th grade teacher and I am excited to write a review of a local non-profit organization that deserves much overdue credit. Harriet Tubman PTO Aftercare is an outstanding after school programming for children ages 3-13 years old. This program is available 5 days a week from the hours of 7:00am-8:15am and 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. The program is designed to challenge the children and stimulate their minds. In addition to the daily enrichment care, they offer monthly trips and weekly fun-day activities to keep child energetically involved. The teachers are sensitive to the physical and emotional needs of students, particularly in transitioning students and parents through the separation process. Letters, numbers, reading,, and writing are taught in an engaging and concrete manner. Students participate in the entire core curriculum and the teachers don’t underestimate the youngsters. The students spend time in computer center, doing art projects, enjoying books and puzzles, and having supervised playtime in the dramatic play area, on the playground, or in their multi-purpose classrooms. My daughter attends Harriet Tubman Blue Ribbon School and this aftercare program has helped so much and in many ways. She is learning so much and she loves going to school there and loves all of the staff. I am fortunate to have such a wonderful place for my child to spend their time while I have to be at work. Nothing can be more comforting for a working parent, than to know that their children are being well cared for by people who have the same values, hopes, and dreams for their children as they do

In search of a quality, affordable child care with before-school and afterschool programs for an 8 year old in my new neighborhood, I was readily advised by residents of the community to check out the program located at the Harriet Tubman National Blue Ribbon School. I did and, I was surprised to find such an array of educational and cultural enrichment programs offered by a non-profit that was actually located in a public school; I was pleasantly pleased with the professional attitude and natural concern for the wellbeing of the students by the program staff. The majority of the teachers of the Harriet Tubman PTO Aftercare Program are actually current teachers at the Harriet Tubman National blue Ribbon School. The Harriet Tubman PTO Aftercare Program consists of academic, social and cultural enrichment and, environmental enrichment criteria that many other such programs did not have. Child care fees are minimal because the program is always seeking innovative, fun and, smart ideas for ways the parents can help to raise funds that are always used exclusively for the Before-care and Aftercare Programs
