I have never been to this local Children's Museum but my daughter and her girls have been. My daughter witnessed a very disturbing event. A mother was in the process of renewing her membership and was told she would need to pay an additional $10.00 to add on her spouse (a woman). The Museum's policy defines a family as one Mom and one Dad and children. No substitutions. This women left in tears and my daughter followed her out of the building and learned more of the details. My daughter will not be renewing her membership. We both are in full support of the local boycott of this nonprofit. My personal point of view is families come in all shapes and sizes and nonprofits that get tax relief/benefit must be diligent in supporting families in all their forms. A local peaceful demonstration is planned for June 22, 2013. We will be there.
I am disgusted by the fact that this nonprofit business discriminates against LGBT families. While in Jacksonville, my family (two moms and a daughter) visited this "museum" multiple times, and didn't like the whole premise anyway because there really wasn't any learning - it was just a hodge podge for dirty toys. Nonetheless, our daughter loved it, so we practically bathed her in anti-bacterial solution. Now that I know they discriminate against same-sex couples, I find it even more disgusting that before. Seriously - this is not the YMCA, or a religious based nonprofit organization - it's a children's "museum". Continue to charge double for same-sex, or single parents and see how long you can stay in business. It's truly disgusting.
