Mission: Haiti outreach empowers haitians through community development, management training, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (wash) facilities and knowledge. Through its work , the organization helps haitians sustainably improve their country, break cycles of dependency, and build better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities. Haiti outreach envisions a future where all haitians are empowered with the capabilities to manage their lives and to work with others to build brighter futures for themselves, their families, and their communities, and all haitians have ready access to safe, sustainable, community-managed water and sanitation facilities, and practice sound hygiene practices. Through 20 years of community development and management training, haiti outreach has empowered haitians with the skills and attitudes to sustainably manage community-initiated water and sanitation resources, which are financially supported by the users through small, but meaningful fees. We
Programs: Community clean water wells: the main work of haiti outreach is drilling community clean water wells and training local water management committees who will sustain them over time. Also, we conduct sanitation education and follow up the training with inspectors for two years after the wells are completed. In 2017, the organization inaugurataed 39 community managed wells. That includes conducting an average 3 month training of each community's volunteer water management committee for each community, drilling the well, and building a secure concrete block well house around each well. Our sanitation and hygiene education helped to bring about latrine coverage for 92% of the households in these 39 communities. In addition, the organization repaired 2 piped water systems in southwestern haiti that were damaged in hurricane matthew and one major piped water system in trou du nord in the north. This activity has impacted the lives of approximately 18,700 people in 2017. Mapping water sources in 2017, haiti outreach completed an extensive mapping program in the three departments of the north, northeast, center, plus the island of la gonave, mapping each natural and man-made water source, testing its potability and functionality, plus mapping all the homes and buildings and mapping the geology for the likelihood of finding subterranean water. With this data we started creating action plans for each commune in those departments to determine what it would take for 100% of the population in those communes to have access to potable water within at least 500 meters of their homes. With that information, we have also created a 5-year plan for haiti outreach to target 7 selected communes to accomplish this.
education trips to haiti each year we facilitate and lead groups of people to travel to haiti from the u. S. And other countries, to experience the people and culture of the country and particularly to see our community development projects first hand. Sometimes they work on a small volunteer project to help out in a rural community. In 2017 we had 41 visitors who traveled with us and stayed at our guest house in pignon, most of them for about one week. They often return as strong supporters of our work and are transformed by their experience in haiti.
