Programs: Tulsa habitat for humanity is an ecumenical, non-profit christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing while providing homeownership solutions including new home construction, refurbishment to existing homes, and home preservation through repairs in partnership with those in need in tulsa county. Tulsa habitat has helped over 400 families, plus supported international housing efforts assisting 314 families with habitat international. Locally, families make application to the habitat homeownership program. Once accepted, families complete an education program including money management training, homeownership preparation workshops, and construction training including hands-on experiences building components used in habitat homes. Families either help in building their new homes with habitat or purchase a reacquired/remodeled habitat house. Families repay zero-interest, no-profit mortgages held by habitat. Principal from mortgages goes back into helping habitat serve more families, provide more home ownership solutions, and building future homes. Habitat uses local products and local workers to produce simple, decent, and affordable homes.
restore - because it is costly and environmentaly unsound to overflow landfills with waste from construction and renovation, restore acts as a "thrift shop" for building materials and household items, offering them for sale at hugely discounted prices to the public. Proceeds from restore sales support the habitat home building program which partners with hard working, limited income tulsa families to build simple, decent, affordable homes.
Habitat for Humanity is GREAT! Working with the Tulsa women build group has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
Not only do you help people do get a "hand up"; but you build some of the best friendships I have ever had.
The people who get these houses work very hard. They put in "sweat equity" and then they turn around and help the NEXT familty.
It is a wonderful organization with a wonderful purpose!
