Mission: Chicago south suburbs habitat is an affiliate of habitat for humanity international, inc. , a nondenominational christian-based not-for-profit organization whose mission is to serve all persons of all race classes and faiths, and work in partnership to eradicate poverty, change lives, and build stronger communities in and around southern cook county. Although habitat international assists with information resources, training, publications, prayer support and in other ways, habitat is primarily and directly responsible for its own operations. Habitat furthers its mission by working in partnership with people from all walks of life to build decent houses for families who otherwise would live in substandard conditions. The organization believes that affordable, safe housing is a necessary prerequisite for the health and well-being of the communities served.
Programs: Habitat builds or rehabs houses using primarily volunteer labor. Homes are sold to low income families at no profit and with an interest free loan. In addition to a downpayment and monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours and their own labor (sweat equity) into building their habitat houses and houses for others. Habitat also provides a winterization and painting program.
the organization operates a resale shop, called restore, where clients can purchase a variety of new or gently used building materials and furniture. Over two-thirds of the items sold are donations from the general public.
