Programs: Habitat for humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. We revitalize neighborhoods, build affordable and sustainable housing solutions, and empower families through successful homeownership. Since 1986, we have partnered with volunteers, the community, and qualified families with limited incomes to strengthen communities in alameda, contra costa, and santa clara counties. Habitat east bay/silicon valley envisions simple, decent, affordable homes in safe neighborhoods for all families. Habitat east bay/silicon valley is proud to be consistently awarded charity navigator's 4-star rating, the highest rating possible. We are also proud to be selected as an "affiliate of distinction" by habitat for humanity international. In recognition of our programmatic strengths and achievements, we received the honored designation for the 2013-2015 term and again for the 2015-2017 term. As the largest affiliate in northern california, habitat east bay/silicon valley has served over 6,000 people through developing new home sub-divisions, acquiring and renovating foreclosed homes, repairing owner-occupied homes in targeted neighborhoods, and providing homebuyer counseling to first time homeowners. We serve qualified limited-income families who are selected on an equal opportunity basis. As part of our "hand up, not hand out" philosophy, each family contributes hundreds of hours of volunteer labor or "sweat equity" to the construction of their home and then purchases the home through a no profit mortgage. Mortgage payments are reinvested to help fund the construction of future habitat homes. Through our program, families gain economic stability, safety, and a foundation upon which to build a brighter future for their children. Homebuyer counseling program:habitat east bay/silicon valley offers a homebuyer counseling program that is designed to empower, educate and equip families with the tools needed to achieve financial literacy and become successful homeowners. The program is a combination of financial counseling and education course work that focuses on money management, savings, credit repair, employment, consumer rights and the responsibilities of homeownership. Community investment:the community invests in our work with volunteer labor and donated resources. This year, more than 8,000 volunteers of all types and talents contributed over 100,000 hours to our programs, building homes and working behind the scenes. Every donation, large or small, cash or material, is used efficiently and effectively. This model creates a partnership between families, volunteers, and donors to leverage resources and maximize return on investment, resulting in safe and sustainable homes and neighborhoods. Sustainable building:since 2000, habitat east bay/silicon valley has built our homes to rigorous local, state, and national green building standards, including homes that earned leed for homes - platinum certification. We build green through a whole-systems approach, designing and constructing homes that conserve energy, water, and material resources and are more healthy, safe, and comfortable. Sustainable business - the restore:habitat east bay/silicon valley operates three restores in oakland and san jose that accept donations of quality new and used items and sell them to the public at discounted prices. All proceeds fund our habitat homes and we divert 3,000 tons of usable items from landfills each year.
