Causes: International, International, Foreign Affairs & National Security
Mission: To promote and facilitate conservation of the gulf of mexico, its resources, and economic productivity through education, public awareness, research, and leadership.
Programs: Education outreach programs related to the gulf of mexico focus on two primary groups, students and teachers. The science and spanish club network is composed of clubs and students from 5th to 12th grade. The programs involve students under the theme of "living and working in the coastal zone. " approximately 400 students participate each year. The down under out yonder coral reef ecology program and intracoastal waterway exploration program are for teachers. The programs take teachers from across the united states into the marine habitats of the flower garden banks national marine sanctuary and the coastal habitats along the intracoastal waterway teaching them the environmental and economic issues of the gulf of mexico. All programs are offered at no cost to the participant, students and teachers.
in collaboration with resource management agencies of local, state, and federal governments and scores of community based organizations the gulf of mexico foundation distributes funds to support community based habitat restoration programs. This program is active in the five u. S. Gulf states and the four u. S. Caribbean territories. More than 60 projects have been funded valued at more than 5 million in direct contributions and leveraged funds. More than 30,000 volunteer hours have been invested in imporving more than 15,000 acres of coastal habitats.
