We have been supporters since 2004 when we adopted our Sammy from them. They go all out to rescue Bassets, and spare no expense in helping them if there are health problems. They have a wonderful group of foster families and transporters. Just all around the best rescue!

We have been affiliated with this wonderful organization since 2004, when we adopted our hound baby Sammy from them. They are great! We have been priviledged to get to know some of the people through facebook also. If you are looking to adopt a rescued Basset Hound, we highly recommend GABR!

What a wonderful organization! They've rescued almost 5000 Bassets and are soon starting their 25th year of operation.

They provide all necessary veterinary care for any Basset that they take in. What more could any group do! They are fantastic

This place stole my dog (for money I’m assuming) one of their volunteers Laurie found me on a site that I was looking to rehome my dog with a legit loving family! She pretended that she wanted her, live chatted with me showing me her home and dogs, promised me the dog would be walked around an area by her house every day. Come to found out as soon as I turned my dog over to her - she immediately took her to Guardian Angel Rescue! I called the owner when I found out and he was a jerk and said his customer wife would call me the next day to make arrangements to get her back and have NEVER received a call back. I will continue to spread the word about this agency! They are DISHONEST!

I have been a donor to GABR since my first adoption in 1998, I feel they do a wonderful job for this precious unique breed. I have adopted 4 hounds from them, and have never been disappointed in their commitment to their jobs from rescue to foster to forever homes. This can be a heartbreaking tireless job, but they do it so well. Yes fundraising is an important part of keeping this organization running, and they are a worthy cause.

I have no idea why Hurtman feels the need to spout his drivel - which is suspect at best !! I've been associated with GABR for a number of years , as a volunteer transporter, a BFF, and other donations, and can attest they are a class organization dedicated to rehoming neglected and abandoned Bassets . I've adopted three personally , one who had 98% of her bladder full of bladder stones !! She received the best Vet care , and is a dear part of my family!! GABR is and continues to be a great organization with the Basset's best interests at heart !!

Beware of supporting GABR. There are serious conflicts of interest. For instance, two of the board members are married to each other. Additionally, the President of the Board of directors is also President of Illinois Charity Auctions, which administers the GABR annual auction every April. GABR is currently under investigation by the Illinois Attorney General. Please be careful with your money; your earned it, but GABR hasn't.

They rescue Bassets from ANYWHERE, take them to an excellent veterinarian for overall care, place them in a beautiful, loving, caring foster home, and find them the best family possible! !!! They have a huge summer "waddle" for all the basset and their family's to party, picnic and have fun together! !!!
These rescue volunteers love what they do! !! And it shows.

I love GABR. They take in Bassets without discrimination. The young and old, healthy and dogs with medical issues. They truly believe every basset deserves a second chance. I just lost a permanent foster who came into rescue at 10 years of age. They covered all vetting, grooming, boarding, special diet and prescriptions. All volunteers work very hard for the dogs and are a great group to communicate with. They are friendly and will help with a problem in a heartbeat. GABR host fund raising events that are so much fun to attend. I am proud to be a part of this organization.

Our family has been adopting basset hounds from GABR for over 13 yrs. We absolutely love this organization. They go above and beyond to take great care of each and every hound. They protect them and ensure their health and safety. They also take time to find suitable and appropriate families for each hound that gets rescued. I highly recommend this rescue.

I have been a BFF (Basset Friends Forever) member/donor for years and have been a foster home for GABR. I have found this rescue to be a wonderful organization. Their fundraiser events are well organized and fun to attend. They have helped hundreds of Bassets find "forever homes" regardless of age or health. GABR has taken in Bassets that have been close to death, nursed them back to good health (regardless of the cost) and have found good homes for them. I am proud to be affiliated with GABR. "It's All About the Dogs".

To most of the charity world, Guardian Angel is a very small part of the overall picture. But to the supporters of GABR, it's a great big part of things. I donate money every month and feel very good about how the money is being used. Very, very happy with this group.

GABR is an outstanding charity. I rarely donate funds to any group other than my church. However, GABR is an exception as I have donated to them for years and became a BFF member last year. Their proven, stable and solid leadership make the decision easy. They are first class from top to bottom. The group generally and the leadership specifically work tirelessly for the bassets they rescue. Furthermore, they help more than dogs. They have generously given of their time and sat down with other charities and shared what they've learned through the years about raising funds, doing it properly and with integrity. Thanks GABR -- keep up the great work!

We adopted our first Basset from Guardian Angel Basset Rescue 12 years ago and when he died we adopted another from them 4 years ago. We have been volunteering for them for about 4 years. The care and attention they give to all their fosters is remarkable. Not only do they find loving homes for Bassets they will also step forward and provide care if one of their fosters is found not to be adoptable.
We have been a monthly donor for several years and see our money being used for the care of homeless Basset Hounds. Its really all about the dogs with GABR.
We are careful where our time money goes when we donate to an organization. We would not support a organization that is not proven to be reputable.

If you look closely, these tax returns don't tell you where the money is really being spent. No one knows what they pay their preferred vet. No one knows if they do fact pay their bills as they claim. But if you ask for details, you WILL be shunned from this rescue. I once held this rescue in high regard and never saw the forest from the trees. It's not all about the dogs. It's all about how much money they can raise. And their policies and procedures are vague, not written down, change regularly and are ultimately the decision of the CEO and the CDO. The fact of the matter is this CEO and CDO are not transparent. This rescue is great at "advertising" to make themselves look good. but when you look deeper, when you see the volunteer turnover and talk to them about the reasons they left, you'll learn more. Why did I leave? Because the CEO called looking for my donation which I had stopped. I also questioned a dog's vet treatment, and the "steering" of dogs to a certain vet for conditions which are not breed specific. Then, the next day, after fostering more than 30 dogs without a spot on my record, many of which were difficult, my previously approved pending adoption was reversed. Suddenly this rescue indicated "I was no longer a suitable home". Because I don't have a fence...Yet the rescue has adopted puppies to people without fences. Because I work... Yet the rescue has adopted puppies to people who work. Because I used a doggie daycare...seriously?!! Because I had filed for divorce... my marriage status should not come into play. I have the financial means to support all my animals despite my marital status. Call me a lot of things but my pets are my life and to say I'm unfit is absurd. My pets have health insurance, wear doggie FitBits, get routine tooth brushings, socialize at daycare and get all vaccines the DAY they are due. And I'm unfit? Interesting! Did I mention they offered to allow me to keep fostering? Did I mention they never responded to my inquiry for further details? Here's the bottom line, I know SEVERAL individuals who were shunned from this rescue after asking DETAILS about money. I turned a blind eye assuming there was something I wasn't seeing. And then it happened to me. DON'T BE NAIVE! THIS RESCUE IS A SCAM!

GABR is one of the select few non-profits I choose to contribute to due to the outstanding leadership of the organization, and, of course, the careful attention given to finding their rescued animals a furever home. Thank you GABR, for your tireless dedication as an advocate for the voiceless.

I got to know GABR through the work of Don Hunt. He works tirelessly transporting hounds and adopting them. It touched my heart when he adopted Rudy, a hound who didn't have many prospects. I also respect the way that this rescue does fundraising and other activities to make it sustainable rather than fundraising on an "as needed" basis. That lead me to become a BFF so that I could help with sustainable funding. It is a joy to contribute to GABR's auction every year. I live in Georgia.

SIncerely,

I've been a GABR volunteer since the beginning. I've been active in several other non profits over the years but none better than this organization. While saving Bassets is the objective, the positive impact on peoples lives is great to see and be apart of. Many hours of hard work by the many volunteers and attention to detailed financial records by the leadership have made it all possible. However, with success come the critics. Questions or suggestions based on facts are well received. People who wish to start rumors with no basis do nothing but hurt the dogs.
My wife and I have fostered and have adopted and are very proud to be BFF members. There is no doubt in my mind that every penny received by GABR goes to benefit the Bassets.

I have been a volunteer and donor to GABR for almost 15 years. They are a wonderful organization who not only help dogs but help people too. I've had the pleasure of giving forever homes to three of their dogs and have fostered over 70 dogs in all.
I love attending GABR events and hearing all the wonderful stories from fellow supporters of how GABR has enriched their lives.

I'm also proud to be part of their monthly BFF(Basset Friend Forever) program as I know how much good it does. They truly are a wonderful organization.

I have been involved with this rescue since the very first Waddle in 1998. It is a well run rescue that has helped so many dogs find their forever home. They manage their donations wisely so that we never have to say no to bringing a dog into the rescue due to financial costs. All dogs are placed in foster homes after being thoroughly vetted. So once they enter our rescue, their life improves 100%

This was a good organization until their founder died. Then it changed. Do they rescue bassets? Yes. However you have to wonder where all the money goes that is raised. Their CEO brags about how much this rescue raises each year. Three board members are in business together. That's true. Do the dogs get vetting? Yes but don't dare question the Chief of Daily Operations. She will delay vet recommended vet treatment. Sorry GABR supporters but that has happened more than once.

This rescue lost three board members within weeks of each other a few years ago. These board members did not like the direction that the rescue was headed AND they asked questions about the donations and expenditures of donations. Two board members were told to leave by the remaining board members. Sorry GABR supporters that is the truth.

This rescue has a history of cherry picking which dogs are rescued. Some seniors in their service area are not rescued. However if the basset is young, they will find room. Sorry GABR supporters but that has happened more than once.

The original poster advised people to think before donating. Well GABR supporters that is his/hers opinion. Don't shoot the messenger. Why are you so upset?

I find the attempt at censorship of any negative comments appalling. Grow up GABR supporters. People can have a different opinion than yours. This isn't Nazi Germany.

As far as driving 50,000 miles as one volunteer claimed. I wonder if he would be driving that if he did not have that GABR van. A van which other volunteers that transport do not have access to use. GABR used to have a few transporters that drove 10,000 miles annually using their own person vehicles and paying for their own gas. When people donated money for that van, the CEO claimed it would be for the volunteers use in transports. Please note that volunteer was plural meaning more than one volunteer would be using it. If it was disclosed that the van would be used by only one volunteer, I wonder if donors works have been so generous. Think about that GABR supporters.

Perhaps a discussion over coffee would be beneficial instead of drinking the kook-aid without question.

I have adopted two bassets from GABR, and both experiences have been positive and meaningful. The organization relies on many dedicated volunteers and uses its resources wisely. I also am a donor to the organization through Basset Friends Forever. I would not give if I were not convinced of GABR's wise stewardship. I imagine before I go I will adopt a couple more bassets from Guardian Angel. Rescue bassets are grateful, and so are their owners.

My review is based on this rating systems faults and peoples attempts to make rating incorrect. There are at this present time numerous post asking people to flag a post to have it removed and then acting people for a five star rating~~how just is this and how afraid should one be of a organization that cannot address complains or issues and instead has to sweep them under the rug. This rescue also bans people who post anything negative or any questions from their facebook page..in fact I am banned for asking a question about the van in question which Don your 50,000 miles was that in the van that the rescue owns that is for all rights and purposes your own personal vehicle. Every organization has complaints and every organization has people who question things or don't like them. But this one definitely censors all comments about them so if it asks like a duck~~just saying

It all started when I wanted to get another Basset Hound & I decided to go with a "Rescue" dog.
I went on the internet & saw Guardian Angel Basset Rescue. I liked the name, and I filled out the long involved application (which I was impressed by, as it showed they took their time to "match" the right person to the right dog).
I got a call a few days later. I talked with an adoption coordinator and then the person who was fostering the dog. She was able to answer all my questions, and I met them with my own Basset a few days later. It was the perfect match.
I am now fostering for GABR and I know there is a lot of time and consideration in making the best match between human & hound.
I've seen 1st hand on how much love and money is put into each individual dog to bring them back to being healthy in mind & body.
Everyone involved with the organization is outstanding!

My beloved Jasper, a horribly abused boy was my first rescue, and an Alumni of GABR from back in 1998. Had it not been for the love, care and stable setting that GABR provided until I could bring him to his forever home, heaven knows what his fate would have been. The dedication of this entire organization is 5-star, exceptional, and a much needed entity to rescue these deserving hounds~bar none. Thank you, GABR, for all that you do. ~ Christine Kohl, WI

Guardian Angel Basset Rescue is a great rescue! They have helped many homeless bassets find homes and sick bassets get the vet care they need. My parents have adopted 3 bassets from them and are now foster parents. I would recommend GABR to anyone looking to adopt a Basset Hound.

I have volunteered for GABR for the past 4 years. Prior to that i attended many of their fundraisers. GABR is a wonderful basset rescue and they do a great job vetting and rehoming bassets. They have wonderful volunteers and a board that cares very much for the dogs. My experience with bad reviews is it tends to be someone who has left the rescue because they couldn't get their way. Move on folks, we have!

I volunteer for this organization and have the upmost respect and admiration for everyone involved. I see many of the vet bills on the Bassets and there are several thousands spent on many of the homeless Basset's brought into the rescue. Bassets that other rescues didn't want due to age or health. GABR gives these Bassets a second chance to have the life they deserved and never had. Many of the sick and old become permanent fosters which means GABR pays all the bills for the remainder of the dogs life. These are the Bassets you don't see on the web site but are being taken care of for the remainder of their lives. Guardian Angel Basset Rescue makes sure they have the wonderful life they deserve and never had and you don't hear about.

As someone who has over 32 years of executive experience in working for a non-profit organization from start-up, I have been volunteering for this organization in several capacities for 8 years. My volunteer time is precious to me. I have high standards that an organization must meet before I volunteer my time. Seldom have I encountered an organization with the heart, ethics, and financial honesty of Guardian Angel Basset Rescue. They go above and beyond what most rescues would or could do to for the hounds they take in, to make sure they get the care and attention they need and have the best homes and lives possible. No-one profits from their fund raising efforts except the dogs. There are no paid employees, and the Board members and Executive Directors are the largest contributors to this exceptionally successful organization. Though not a member of the Board, I personally know them to be highly motivated honest ethical individuals whose only profit is the pleasure they get in ensuring the organization's continued ability to rescue, rehabilitate and successfully place dogs in loving homes who would otherwise perish.

This rescue is one of the largest and most successful rescues in the country! Their success is because of the leadership and most importantly, the volunteers. If this organization was not being run properly or was being pillaged by the leaders, a number of things would happen, and they would not be able to give the great care they provide for their rescues. Having worked in Human Resources all my career, you quickly learn the negative reviews come from the disgruntled employee! Usually someone who wasn't able to write their own rules.
