Programs: Food:growgood cultivates the farm, which consists of an orchard of more than 70 fruit trees, 14 raised vegetable garden beds, a chicken coop, a commercial greenhouse, and a california native plant garden filled with flowering, drought-tolerant plants-all outfitted with a state-of-the-art netafim drip irrigation system. In 2017, growgood harvested more than 8,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables with a market value of over $20,000 to feed shelter residents. This is an increase of 1,000 pounds of produce compared to 2016.
therapy:growgood offers food for life skills classes twice a week for clients enrolled in the shelter's addiction recovery program. During 2017, each workshop hosted an average of 15-20 clients, more than half of whom were veterans. The classes focus on nature study, exercise, body-mind connection, stress management, nutrition, and more.
jobs:during 2017, growgood provided paid three-month employment opportunities for 16 shelter residents on the farm through our transitional employment program. Eight of the sixteen clients obtained permanent employment; six were hired outside the farm and two continue to work at growgood.
social enterprise project:growgood's newest addition, a 30' x 48' climate-controlled greenhouse, will allow us to grow more food, employ more residents, and launch a social enterprise business to generate income from la restaurants and businesses. The new addition allows for year-round production and preparation of microgreens, herbs, flowers, and vegetables. In addition to providing training and employment opportunities for the homeless, growgood plans to increase earned income for the organization through the social enterprise project. In addition to the expenses shown below, the organization incurred 93,866 of costs during the year constructing the climate-controlled greenhouse. Such costs are included on the organization's balance sheet.
