Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animals

Mission: Formed in March of 2001, GREY2K USA Worldwide is the largest greyhound protection organization in the United States and now works internationally. As a non-profit 501(c)4 organization, we work to pass stronger greyhound protection laws and to end the cruelty of dog racing on both national and international levels. We also promote the rescue and adoption of ex-racers across the globe.

Results: We have written and passed bills making dog racing illegal in the states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Colorado. When we first began our campaign, there were 49 tracks in 15 states and now there are just 21 in seven states. Additionally, we have worked to block the expansion of dog racing to countries such as Jamaica, the Philippines and South Africa. Our research has led to the exposure of hundreds of media documented cases of greyhound cruelty and neglect, including dogs testing positive for cocaine, dogs suffering terrible injuries and dogs experiencing severe neglect at racing kennels both here and abroad. See more at http://www.grey2kusa.org/action/states.html and http://www.grey2kusa.org/who/victories.html

Direct beneficiaries per year: by passing a bill to make Colorado the 39th state to ban dog racing

Programs: We document the cruelty of dog racing and use our research to pass greyhound protection laws with the goal of ending dog racing worldwide. We also promote the adoption of ex-racers worldwide. Read more at http://www.grey2kusa.org/who/index.html

This is a superbly run, very effective organization, led by very smart, compassionate people who have dedicated their lives to stopping the horrible mistreatment of greyhounds forced to race for others' gains. They have done a superb job in educating the public and have inspired thousands of volunteers to join together to end the cruelty. Already, they can point to solid progress in closing tracks and finding the surviving dogs loving homes.

This fake "review" was posted by a dog racing supporter, as part of an organized campaign to try to drive down our review score on this site. GREY2K USA works to pass greyhound protection laws, phase out dog racing and promote greyhound adoption. We have a strong record of accomplishments. Thirty-one dog tracks have closed or ended dog racing in the U.S. since our formation in 2001. During the same period, gambling on dog races has dropped by 70% and greyhound breeding has declined by 60%. We have passed sixteen major greyhound protection laws, including prohibitions on commercial dog racing in Colorado, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Arizona. We are an efficient non-profit organization. In 2016, 81% of all expenditures were used directly for programs including legislative advocacy, ballot initiatives, legal research, and public education about the cruelty of greyhound racing. Greyhound breeders resort to cynical tactics like this because we are ending their cruelty.

Grey2K is a scam. They donate ZERO dollars to retired racing greyhound adoption groups. They spread LIES about the treatment of Greyhounds at racetracks. They also STEAL photos of dogs, and make up FAKE stories to go with the photos. Check their financial records. Most of their. Money goes to salaries, trips aka vacations.

Grey2K is a extremist animal rights group that will not hesitate to lie to get donations, steal images off of websites and Facebook to make up stories of abuse and is doing it's best to close down an industry of hard working and caring people who raise, train, race and ADOPT OUT Greyhounds. I am rating them with one STAR because there is no NO STAR Option in order to post this! They did their dirty work in New England... then instead of helping to relocate dogs and help with adoption.. THEY RAN AWAY> TURNED THEIR BACKS> laughing all the way to the bank ON YOUR DONATIONS>>
Now they are trying the same thing in Florida.. They have paid off politicians, and are fraudulently lying once more.. BUT THEY WILL NOT WIN THIS TIME>>> The supporters of Greyhounds . will fight till November and beyond.. G2k will not be allowed to dislocate over 9000 Greyhounds, currently racing and being housed in Florida, with no thought to the fact that there is not enough room at adoption group shelters to take them or even the ability to move them in the time frame the amendment is suggesting.. The voting public in Florida will be educated about what this amendment will do NEGATIVELY.. to their whole economy .. including the loss of over 3000 jobs directly affected.. and an additional 2000 jobs that will be peripherally affected.. The DOGS LOVE TO RACE.. THEY ARE NOT ABUSED>> THEY ARE RAISED WITH LOVE AND THE BEST OF CARE>>> THE TRUTH WILL BE HEARD... DO NOT Allow G2k to steam roll you with their mis-truths. They are lawyers and lobbyists. putting money in the pockets of politicians!! THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY>>> They use less than ONE PERCENT Of their income for the dogs in adoption.. Go to Facebook and Watch Greyhound Chronicles!!! .. Visit a Greyhound kennel... Watch a race.. the most exciting 30 seconds your will ever have! SEE FOR YOURSELF>>THESE DOGS ARE LOVED! The attached photo MAY NOT BE USED FOR ANY PURPOSE OTHER THAN THIS POST SHOWING HAPPY< LOVING DOGS!

That last review was written by Carey Thiel, the head of Grey2K. I have been involved with GHs for over 15 years and NEVER have had a GOOD interaction with Grey2K. They are lobbyists.. They raise money for themselves.. Their tax returns speak the truth.. Hundreds of thousands of dollars raised.. and NONE spent on the hounds they profess to protect. They have made adoption groups work hundreds of times harder, trying to place "displaced " hounds.. And they are supported by another money making organization HSUS (Humane Society of the US) NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH YOUR LOCAL HUMANE SOCIETY.. Neither of these organizations are worth the public dollar.. but the public is duped into making contributions by the lies they tell and the distortions they make. I bred and raced GHs for several years. I no longer do that. I DO,however, adopt and foster hounds to this day. I also, when possible, take part in transporting hounds going to their forever homes.. I do fundraisers for my local adoption groups (I am a professional photographer).. and I don't take money that belongs to the hounds and PUT IT IN MY BANK ACCOUNT!

The claim that I (Carey Theil) have written any of the reviews here is false. This review was written by a greyhound breeder and is not factually accurate. Although GREY2K USA is an advocacy organization, we support greyhound adoption in any ways. We promote greyhound adoption, we make adoption referrals, and we directly support local adoption groups.

This organization knows nothing about greyhounds. They spread misinformation, outright lies and steal pictures from unsuspecting dedicated greyhound people, all to get $$$ from their followers. They block anyone who disagrees with their agenda and delete posts & comments that try to provide a more balanced viewpoint. Very disturbing that this organization is allowed to go unchecked.

There should be an option to give negative stars.

This organization is based on lies to trick people into filling their pockets with your donations. Your money does not help the lives of any animals. Greyhounds have the most successful adoption rate of any breed worldwide. Racing greyhounds are also treated better than any breed worldwide from birth to racing to breeding to retirement which makes them the BEST companion. Grey2k steals, lies, and does not put animals' best interest at heart. Grey2k does not care about the thousands of animals being killed in shelters on a daily basis but wants the breed that has the highest adoption rate to die. Visit a farm, race kennel, or adoption kennel, or a race track and get educated before filling the pockets of liars.

One only needs to see the character of the founder to see this is a sham like HSUS and others. They take donations to pay themselves and Lobbyists and donate NOTHING to greyhouds. The only thing they do is spread lies and defame an industry. The founder talks about her "epiphany" to save dogs after she allegedly threw herself in front of a train. She then tried to sue the operators of the train and LOST. She testified she had NO MEMORY of that day or the accident, yet she uses graphic accident details to get people to sympathize and donate money. That is no better than the guy that was thrown in jail for lying about having cancer on a GoFundMe page. NO INTEGRITY and NO CREDIBILITY

As a greyhound adopter, I’ve looked into greyhound racing and it is not cruel and inhumane. The dogs are loved and well-cared for. This organization spews propaganda based on lies and outdated information.

Sharing from my timeline; feel free to copy and paste onto your own!

As both a retired racing greyhound advocate and an attorney, this crap from Grey2K makes me furious! Shelley has dedicated a good portion of her life to promoting retired racing greyhound adoptions (and she has, for many years, had over a dozen at any one time living with her in her “Greyhound retirement home” (I’ll post a picture from her annual Christmas cards in the comments). Both she and her husband are veterinarians, and she is a former racing greyhound trainer.

When I started out adopting greyhounds over 20 years ago, I bought into the anti-racing propaganda. The sport has improved, but even back then, about a year or so after I adopted her, I spoke with my first girl‘s breeder, who gave me a lot of information on her and was thrilled that she had found a great retirement home. Since then I’ve come to know many people involved in the greyhound racing industry, and the love they have for these dogs is just amazing.

You’ll always find rotten apples in every profession, including greyhound racing. But that type of person is a rare exception. Why are adopters such rabid fans of ex-racers? Because they’re fantastic dogs, and their trainers are a big component in why they are so amazing!

Grey2K holds itself out as a charity, but it’s not a 501(c)(3) organization, and, contrary to what many believe, donations to this group are NOT tax deductible. I always check out charitable organizations Charity Navigator before I even think of donating (and you should too); you can find Grey2K‘s information here: www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.profile&ein=043554776

And you may not know this, but you can look up any charity on guide star and commented files federal Form 990, you can see exactly what it’s financial situation is. Here are a few salient facts from Grey2K’s most recently filed (2016) Form 990 (the organizational income tax return; my numbers are rounded to the nearest $100):

Total revenue: $596,800
Total expenses: $619,200
Operating LOSS: $21,500
Executive compensation: $106,400
Other wages and salaries: $125,200
Lobbying: $123,400

So you really want to help racing greyhounds? Donate to your local adoption organization, or any track-connected adoption group. Look into their fundraising and operating costs before you donate. Most retired racer adoption groups are run strictly by volunteers and give the money raised directly to care for the dogs. That’s where you’ll get the biggest bang for your buck. Not with organizations such as Grey2K that give NOT ONE PENNY to the dogs!

While wonderful strides have been made in animal welfare, this organization distorts facts and does NOTHING to actually help dogs or make them safer. Before I actually adopted my first of 4 greyhounds and started exploring their backgrounds, I was anti-racing and believed the lies. I quickly learned that my 4 dogs were very well-cared for and even much loved throughout their lives, regardless of whether they raced or not. The racing industry is 99% people who love dogs, just like the anti-racers, but they have learned to open their farm and kennel doors to try to let the public see the truth of how dogs are cared for. Before you donate to pay the "salary" of these founders, know they are trying to end the greyhound breed we ALL love. If they kill off racing (up for a Florida vote in Fall 2018), hundreds of carefully bred generations die as the careers and life's work of thousands of people die as well. Greyhounds are not bred to be pets, they live for the chase, and YET they are WONDERFUL pets....BECAUSE OF HOW THEY ARE TREATED BEFORE ADOPTING. Some individuals are naturally nervous, "spooky", not because of how they were treated but like any mammal, genetic variety plays a role in "personality". There's wonderful resources out there - look at ALL facts, not just someone playing on your heartstrings and asking for money.

For 17 years I have seen this non profit destroy economies in the USA. Including the retired greyhound adoption agencies. They will be the cause of this royal and champion bloodline to become extinct. They are not honest. Check out the kennels for yourself. Laws have changed. People that work with these animals would report abuse. They have invested years in caring for these dogs. Authorities check up on them. So go see for yourself how they are treated. I dare you . Any kennel would welcome you. Speak to the real trainors and owners of these dogs. The owners don't even own a greyhound. This is a fake organization. Review their IRS stats. Most of the money goes to the husband and wife owners.

Greyhound is and has been cruel and inhumane since its original legalization during the Great Depression. It could not be known at that time that so many dogs would suffer and die as a result. Some of the most revered dogs in world history, the companions of the Pharaohs, became a tool for racing. According to state inspection records, racing dogs are kept confined in small, stacked cages for an average of 20 hours per day. When they are allowed out of these cages to race several times a month, they face the risk of serious injury and death. In Florida, official records show that a racing dog dies every three days. The recent spate of cocaine-positive dogs nationwide evinces an industry that is getting worse, not better. Read more about the humane issues confronting greyhounds in the US and worldwide on our web site at https://www.grey2kusa.org/about/issues.php.

GREY2K USA Worldwide has received top ratings from charity watchdogs including Guidestar and GreatNonprofits itself for a reason. It uses donations efficiently to reach its goal of ending dog racing and promoting the adoption of ex-racers. Instead of cleaning up its act in the light of media exposes and government fines for animal abuse, the industry of dog racing continues to deny that keeping dogs in cages for 23 hours a day and disposing of them when they are no longer profitable is ethical. The question we ask the general public is this: Would you treat your dog this way?

My sense as a greyhound adopter is that dogs on the tracks are, generally speaking, well treated. They simply would not be the stable, trusting and healthy animals I see come up if that were not the case. Of course there are unfortunate individual owners and trainers who do not treat the dogs properly, but they are the exception. The issue I see in part is that if greyhound racing were to end tomorrow, that would be the end of this strain of greyhounds. The breeders would close up shop, the existing dogs would, hopefully, all be adopted, and that would be the end, no more racing greyhounds, only the AKC, which are not the same.
By the way, when the Mobile dog track closed recently, it was a combination of dog racing people and adoption groups who saw to it that all the dogs were adopted out. In the recent hurricane in FL, dog track people stayed with the dogs, in the kennels, to care for them. The tracks gave money to help see the dogs through. Grey2K contributed nothing to these situations. There is a role for a helpful, fair minded animal advocate, but Grey2K are anything but.

GREY2K USA Worldwide works to pass laws to protect greyhounds and promote the adoption of ex-racers. One key example of how we work can be seen in the recent closure of Tucson Greyhound Park. Our legal counsel worked with dog track lawyers to draft a bill that prohibited dog racing in the state, saving the tax payers from subsidizing the activity and the dogs from injury and death. It was a win-win for the state and the business was able to streamline its activities. TGP was glad to be relieved of the long-held requirement to make dogs run around in circle s with no one watching. In the months before the measure passed, we worked with TGP to sponsor dogs as they were released from racing and after the last night of racing, all the greyhounds had been sent on to adoption. This is how we work and will continue to work to save greyhounds from the cruelty of dog racing.

My experience of GREY2KUSA Worldwide cannot be summerized in few words. Writing as an academic animal ethicist and volunteer I can say without hesitation that GREY2K USA Worldwide is an important nongovernment organization (NGO). It is a site where individuals across the globe work in concert with others. GREY2K USA Worldwide fosters knowledge exchange, informed public debate, public learning, shared purpose, and solidarity with its global outreach program to protect greyhounds and promote the interests, welfare rescue and adoption of greyhounds. GREY2K USA Worldwide often gives voice to values, normative ideals that might otherwise go unheard. It demonstrates through actual practices that society’s moral codes regarding greyhounds can change and are changing. GREY2K USA Worldwide is not what I would describe as an ideological organization; rather it is a pragmatic organization that recognizes what can be done one step at a time. It is the success of its practices and ideals that has sped systemic change in the lives of thousands if not tensor thousands of greyhounds for the better and hastened the decline in the greyhound racing industry globally.

During two previous military advisor assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan, this organization provided me with information and moral support that greatly assisted my efforts in rescuing eight dogs to forever safe and happy homes in the United States.

Thank you! GREY2K USA Worldwide has received top ratings from charity watchdogs including Guidestar and GreatNonprofits itself for a reason. It uses donations efficiently to reach its goal of ending dog racing and promoting the adoption of ex-racers.

I have a dear friend, Jay Kirkus, whose 2 greyhounds I used to dog sit for, in addition I am an animal professional, so I love all creatures, and never, never, never should they be 1. used for sport and 2. abused. Please end this senseless "sport".
