Causes: Boys & Girls Clubs, Children & Youth
Mission: To inspire and enable all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens and community leaders of tomorrow. We provide a safe and positive environment where young people can participate in productive activities while having fun and developing a sense of belonging. We provide the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with peers and adults. The club expects members to develop a moral character that allows them to know right from wrong and to behave in an ethical manner. A strong sense of high expectations is consistently communicated and reinforced by staff.
Programs: Teensat grenville baker boys & girls club, we engage our teens in a positive and practical approach to preparing for a college education. We provide a great, safe, supportive and productive space for our members to learn and grow as unique individuals with proactive programs geared towards their future. Many come from homes where english is not the primary language spoken and where they will be the first in their family to attend college. Our expected outcome is for all our teens to be on track to graduate from high school and to go on to college. On a daily basis, our staff works with our teens to strengthen their english, math, and essay writing skills through our power hour and college prep programs. Teens also receive training in our tech center to strengthen their research skills needed for college searches and projects for school. On a weekly basis, teens attend sat classes to learn the strategies, time-management and academic skills needed for standardized testing. The financial literacy needed for college is provided through a comprehensive program called money matters for both teens and their parents. On a monthly basis, our teens visit universities and colleges in the tri-state area on weekends. Twice a year, a group of teens go on a multi-day and night college tour to visit schools during winter and summer breaks. For our high school seniors, one-on-one assistance is provided to complete applications for admissions, scholarships, and financial aid. Our keystone club provides an opportunity for our teens to build their leadership and personal skills and to give back to their community while building their resumes and their confidence. In 2017, keystone club alone performed more than 2000 hours of community service. The city club introduces our teens to the exciting cultural advantages of new york city, with trips to museums, theater, and other cultural sites. Many of our participants come from underprivileged families who would not otherwise have this opportunity. The success of our program relies on the strength of the mentoring relationships developed by our staff. The club also offers programs in performing and visual arts to foster academic performance. During the summer, our teen center provides a drop-in program and a series of teen trips in addition to a teen tour trip, combining travel and service. In 2017, the teen department served 675 teens in grades 6 - 12.
educationthe long term objective of grenville baker boys & girls club's education program is to provide members with the academic skills and the technological tools they will need to succeed at school. Homework help is a comprehensive homework assistance and tutoring program for members of all ages that provides the support, resources and guidance necessary to complete academic assignments. In addition to our homework help program, the education department has developed a comprehensive stem program offering a variety of daily activities and programs at our technology center designed to develop members' skills and knowledge in stem, computer use and the digital arts. In 2017, the club also enhanced the explorer club membership for kindergartners, first and second graders. In 2017 our kindergarten memberships increased to 58 members. Our explorer center provides a more structured environment with a high staff to child ratio. Our intermediate members in grades 3 - 5 also benefitted from a dedicated space for their age group to participate in homework help and power hour. In addition, enrichment programs such as lego robotics, digital arts, science club, and more, are offered to both explorers and intermediates each week. In stem, our tweens focus on their ability to analyze data, think critically and solve problems in teams and as individuals combined with innovative and creative thinking. Reading is also emphasized and strengthened in programs library and book clubs. In 2017, the education department served over 600 children in grades k - 5.
athleticsgrenville baker boys & girls club has a strong tradition of promoting athletics and fitness. From its earliest days, the mission has centered on providing a positive environment within which young people can thrive and grow. A big part of helping young people to reach their full potential is teaching them the keys to a healthy life. Our staff focuses on the practical steps each child can take in order to keep fit, to eat right and to form the positive relationships needed to support a healthy lifestyle. Running and playing with friends at the club keeps them active, avoiding sedentary behavior. Participation in sports teaches them valuable lessons in teamwork, competition and cooperation. Members of all ages are given the opportunity to try out a range of active pursuits. In the spring, in addition to baseball, softball, gymnastics, and tumbling, the club added flag football and agility training. In the fall, hip hop, jazz, pilates, yoga, taekwondo, ballet and kickline were offered as well as indoor sports including soccer, volleyball, and wiffleball. The winter included a basketball season where the club had 611 members from age 5 to 18 years old participate in a twelve week season of practices, games, playoffs and championships. This year 141 teens participated in two leagues for grades 9-12 where members were encouraged to pick their own teams and coaches. The club also has open gym time available for kids to stay active. The explorer club membership for grades k - 2 includes instructional sports at no extra cost with soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter and baseball/softball in the spring. Athletic programs are supervised by trained instructors to help kids improve their physical fitness and confidence, introducing kids to competition in a respectful and nurturing environment. The club's summer camp includes a basketball and gymnastics camp option. In 2017, the athletics department served 850 children and teens.

The GBBGC is an outstanding organization that serves nealry 2,000 children of the North Shore of Nassau County on a daily basis. Its sports, education, character building and training programs are tops, and the Club serves a mixed population including many children at risk and from underprivileged backgrounds. With virtually no governmental or regular funding, the Clubs needs are ongoing and significant. I urge you to donate now and supportthe GBBGC. Thank you!
