Mission: Education to create healthy, environmentally sustainable, community friendly transportation options in the city of buffalo
Programs: Encouragement in our efforts to encourage the use of alternate modes of transportation, we organized the skyride, a bicycle tour featuring an incredible, scenic ride over the buffalo skyway. The experience provides participants with a rare opportunity to view our city in a whole new way, as well as visiting historic locations and experiencing new bicycle infrastructure throughout buffalo. The skyride is our signature event and is the capstone to mays bike month activities while encouraging participants to have a conversation on the future of our legacy infrastructure.
engineering across the country and around the world, cities are supporting bicycling as a cost effective means of solving traffic problems, increasing quality of life, preventing chronic diseases, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and providing equitable access for residents of all income and demographic groups. In collaboration with the city of buffalo, we are working to making cycling safer, more attractive, and fun while creating vibrant and in-demand communities and generating a new buzz of possibility for revitalization and reinvention. To accomplish this, a grant from nys energy research development authority and nys department of transportation was procured to develop of a city-wide bicycle facility master plan in collaboration with the city. The plan will document our communitys comprehensive vision for infrastructure investments that will increase the attractiveness of bicycling over time. This plan of bicycle facility improvements will establish a current baseline, detail improvements, set mode share goals and provide for a way to measure progress on future investments.
education through a safe-routes-to-school grant procured from the nys department of transportation and in partnership with buffalo public schools, charter schools and community centers, we have implemented our recycle-a-bicycle program in schools and neighborhood settings across the city. Student participants build their own bicycles from salvaged parts while learning how our transportation choices impact our environment, our communities and our health. They are taught how to properly ride their bicycles and provided a helmet, lights and a lock so that bicycling can become a healthy and safe form of transportation for them throughout their life.
