Mission: Green City Force trains young leaders to power a green and inclusive economy, through service. Our model corps in New York City enlists and trains young people from low-income housing communities for a new and more equitable economy. We equip them with the tools to change the trajectory of their lives and access good jobs. Corps Members develop a passion for sustainability and service through driving large-scale environmental and health initiatives in public housing and other frontline communities. We design service as a path to greater wellbeing and means to enlist young people to become contributors and leaders in the movement to build a greener, fairer and more just world. Graduates go on to jobs or college, directly or through alumni initiatives that build towards sectoral jobs and apprenticeships, via social enterprise contracts or advanced training developed with employers. Our network of alumni, partners and supporters constitutes a growing ecosystem anchored in our corps.
Target demographics: the environment, youth of NYC, urban agriculture, recycling programs

Programs: Green City Force (GCF) AmeriCorps members provide unique value to thousands of their fellow community members through innovative service projects in two main categories. Their service is focused on community engagement tied to energy consumption behavior change education, as well as land improvement by growing healthy food on urban farms. Corps members are public housing residents who are under- or unemployed young adults (ages 18-24) with a GED or high school diploma but no clear path towards gainful employment. GCF engages corps members in a 900 hour or 1700 hour service and training program through which they gain skills, develop a passion, problem-solve complex issues in high-need communities, help meet climate action goals and prove their abilities to themselves and future employers. GCF also offers employment placement assistance and support services to corps members and alumni and has maintained 80% graduation and placement rates for the past several years.
everytime i visit or volunteer with GCF its a worthwhile experience. the people running the program are friendly and inviting as are the NYCHA students/ workers. this is a great program that not only beautifies otherwise desolate spaces within NYCHA housing but also provides access to gardening experiences as well as healthy foods and an opportunity for people to get a holistic experience of farm to table living- id like to see these farms in every NYCHA complex as well as every available empty lot in NYC
I volunteered for Green City Force in 2018 and helped them with their communications strategy. Today I'm proud to be an official Advocate of this amazing organization which has been training so many talented young people and making a green and positive impact in NYC!
