Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Environment

Mission: To foster the creation of a resilient system of commerce based on the principles of sustainable materials management.

Programs: Sustainable packaging coalition: greenblue's flagship program, the sustainable packaging coalition (spc), is a working group of companies from across the packaging supply chain that has grown from nine to nearly 200 members since 2004 and now is recognized as the leading voice on packaging sustainability. Through strong member support, a science-based approach, and supply chain collaborations, we endeavor to build packaging systems that encourage economic prosperity and a sustainable flow of materials. The spc's definition of sustainable packaging has become widely adopted within industry as the guiding vision to improve the environmental performance of packaging.

sustainable materials management: in 2013 greenblue created a program for sustainable materials management. This program includes the former chemicals program and all of the tools greenblue has developed to create greater transparency for industry. The three key principals for sustainable materials management are: use wisely, eliminate toxicity and recover more. Greenblue's program is built on these three principals. The tools include: cleangredients - an online database of chemicals data to help companies identify safer alternatives for use in consumer products miq - a transparency tool for materials makers and buyers to evaluate material health in terms of the human and environmental effects epat - environmental paper assessment tool (epat) is web- based platform for buyers and sellers of pulp and paper products to collaborate and evaluate environmental performance data across the supply chain. Compass - a streamlined comparative lca assessment tool for packaging

GreenBlue is an awesome nonprofit that does a lot of work in the community. They taught me how to compost through their initiative with the Charlottesville City Market, and I am so grateful for their help in diverting my kitchen waste from the landfill.
