Mission: We empower communities and change lives using the approaches of social work, advocacy, financial literacy and other disciplines. The league with a staff of 40 individuals provides a pathway to the american dream through homeownership, independence and self-sufficiency. We provide direct services to more than 65,000 individuals annually. The league manages and administers some 30 programs in the areas of entrepreneurship, employment and training, and housing and community development.
Programs: Tenant-based rental assistance program (tbrap) identifies qualified individuals in the low-income range living in the district, charles, prince george's and calvert counties in maryland, and in partnership with the dc department of housing, pays up to 30 percent of housing expenses. The program pays rent for as many as 325 people, including disabled residents.
home purchase assistance program (hpap) plays a pivotal role in bringing together those in search of a home and their new abodes. In this program, residents who want to buy their first home can apply for no-interest loans of up to 40,000. Eligible individuals and households may also receive closing cost assistance up to four percent of the home purchase price. Applicants must have good credit, be the head of household, and live in a primary residence in the district of columbia. Qualified applicants can use hpap money towards single family homes, coop apartments and condominiums. Assets, income and household size will determine the amount of the five- year deferred interest loans.
entrepreneurship center the greater washington urban league removes barriers to entrepreneurship and provides expert guidance to inspire execution. Gwul believes group instruction educates but one-on-one personalized coaching empowers action. Gwul is committed to offering free and/or discounted services but build competent entrepreneurs. The entrepreneurship center offers entrepreneur training 101, a 10 week training program for start-ups and entrepreneur 102, a specialized program for existing business owners. In addition, the center offers subject matter workshops, executive business mentorship, one-on-one personalized coaching, facilitation of access to capital, business licensing assistance, business model development, financial and credit counseling, and market research support.
