Mission: Gift of life donor program ("gldp"), the tax-exempt non-profit federally designated organization serving the eastern half of pennsylvania, southern new jersey and delaware, is responsible for recovering and allocating organs and tissues used in life-saving and life-enhancing transplants. Perhaps best known by its telephone numbers, 1-800-donors-1, or 1-800-kidney-1, gift of life is the region's primary source of information regarding all aspects of organ and tissue donation and transplantation. Since 1974, gift of life has helped to coordinate more than 38,000 life-saving organ transplants and an estimated 550,000 life-enhancing tissue transplants. Gift of life is part of the nationwide organ and tissue sharing network operated by the united network for organ sharing ("unos"). Programs: A. ) mission statement: gldp remains dedicated to improving the quality of life of patients awaiting transplantation by maximizing the availability of donor organs and tissues while upholding the highest medical, legal, ethical, and fiscal standards. To achieve its mission, gldp will- work in partnership with the region's hospitals and health care professionals to ensure that the family of every potential donor is offered the opportunity to support organ and tissue donation in a compassionate, timely, informative and caring manner; - provide educational programs and materials to positively predispose all members of the community to organ and tissue donation so that the donation is viewed as a fundamental human responsibility; - serve as a community resource by providing support for families of donors as well as transplant recipients and their families, and - serve as a leader in the advancement of organ and tissue donation and transplantation.
