I have been volunteering at the GCCBS shelter for about 3 years now. I ended up adopting one of the parrots that I helped care for too. Parrots can be challenging for people who do not understand their needs and that is why many of them end up at the shelter. The staff strives to find good homes for these parrots by asking people how much they know about parrots and having the person/family visit with the parrot to assure a good match is made. When it comes to a larger parrot, they are the ones who choose the person not the other way around. My Goffin cockatoo Simon picked me and how could I say no.

Hi, my name is Simon. I am a goffin cockatoo. I was adopted from the Greater Chicago Cage Bird Society about 4 months ago. My old family gave me up because they were getting too old to care for me. I was sad and very scared at first and pulled out most of my feathers. I met my new mom because she was a volunteer at the shelter. She would come a couple of times a week to clean and feed the birds. Then she would come and talk to me and give me head scratches. It took me about 6 months, but I decided that she was my person. My new mom brought me to her house and gave me a fancy cage with plenty of toys. I have grown in a lot of feathers since I have been here, and I am starting to play with my toys. I still am very cautious, but my mom is patient and lets me be me.
Sometimes it takes a while for a bird to choose a person but when they do it is the best feeling. You can meet other birds at the rescue and give volunteering a try to really get to know them.

The GCCBS is a very sacred and important place. These magnificent and intelligent birds of all types receive the shelter and care they need when they need it most. The adoption service and protocols are strict and process driven and this is important as properly paring up a bird with a new home takes careful consideration for the shelter, bird(s) and new adopters.

I have adopted two Sun Conures, Cooper and Piper (the latest) and they immediately became family in our home. They were healthy and non-aggressive and I attribute that to an excellent shelter environment and human care at GCCBS. The staff and volunteers at GCCBS are just wonderful and very welcoming. I so thank them for being there for us (humans and birds)!

This is a great ALL volunteer/ donation bird rescue. We treat all the birds as if there are our own. Every bird is seen by an avian vet when they come in the door. We are a big happy bird family that works together for the health/ happiness of the birds.

This is an amazing nonprofit organization!!! The work they do here for birds is just awesome. They care so well for the birds here and for their livelihood, it's such a beautiful site to see. I adopted a parrot from here about 10 months ago and it has been one of the best decisions of my life. I'm so privileged to be able to take part in such a wonderful organization that cares very deeply for the lives of the birds. I just love volunteering here. The people are absolutely wonderful. I can't say enough great things about this place! :)

Sometimes the smallest and/or eldest of animals tend to be overlooked. To find such an organization that cares for a bird ranging in sizes and age is tough. GCCBS and their incredible hearts take in birds in tough situations. They provide warm, clean and a loving environment to help facilitate these wonderful birds into a new home. They care for each bird independently, getting to know their personalities, tending to their healthcare needs and working to rehabilitate. Each volunteer and member embraces the same mission, to be their family until they find their forever family. Members and volunteers work 365 days a year tending to tasks such as maintain a clean environment, feeding and providing medications. They embrace the playtime and socialization with each bird. For those birds in need, members and volunteers qualified have been willing to foster those who need that extra TLC.
This fabulous organization has been a great asset to the communities in the Chicagoland area. GCCBS provides continuing education to those within the communities. Bringing awareness to the not so obvious animal rescue.
The amazing hearts these men and woman have for these birds is immense. I couldn't be more proud to be apart of the GCCBS family.

I absolutely LOVE volunteering at the Greater Chicago Caged Bird Society. I have had parrots my whole life and I work at a bird hospital, so it's safe to say I'm a bird lover. The GCCBS is phenomenal. The facility is really clean and all of the potential adoptees are loved and well cared for. The staff is amazing. Everyone I've worked with really loves what they do and it shows. I can't say enough good things.

I am a bird lover. About a year and a half ago I lost my ringneck to some kind of respiratory infection. We never made it to the vet so I took the appointment with my surviving birdie. He turned out fine so I went to the bird rescue with my hopes up. You see, I am in my 60s & having a 23 year old bird I did not want to start over with a baby bird due to my age. I contacted the Greater Chicago Cage Bird Society & sent the information & filled out an application. They were thorough as I expected them to be. When I came in to see the available pets I was thrilled to find Kiwi. He was the same species as the one we lost & almost the same age as our other bird! He fit in right away & soon we were speaking Spanish with him just like his former owner! It couldn't have been a better fit!!

As a volunteer and donor I have seen the dedication for the birds in their care. Beyond the daily care for 100 plus birds everyday, yes everyday. They provide help for people who have a problem with a bird, going to other towns to help a pet bird that escaped when the temperatures were below freezing. We have 5 volunteers fostering 16+ sick birds that need more care than can be provided at the shelter. Most need medications several times a day. We have an Avian Veterinarian on site monthly to check for the health of the birds, and an Avian Bird Hospital for more intense care, Yearly costing + $20,000 annually This is all from a totally volunteer organization with no paid staff. We could not exist without donations and our dedicated volunteers. (and we need more!). We are at capacity Many more birds need help. Our rent, utilities nd other expenses take our entire budget for a year. We need more space than we have and need to expand for the many birds we cannot help.

They care deeply about the birds they they take in. Their adoption process is rigorous to be sure the bird is going to a good home. They don't adopt out to breeders. They evaluate the adoption request to be sure the adopters are able to provide the care and love they need.

I have been a volunteer at GREATER CHICAGO CAGE BIRD SOCIETY for a year. My responsibilities as a volunteer include cleaning cages, providing fresh food, water, and cut veggies and fruits.
These tasks are required to be performed on a daily basis.
Volunteer time is also spent engaging with the birds to promote socialization, play and exercise.
Other responsibilities include general cleaning and organizing equipment and supplies.

Bird shelters are needed due to the high number of relinquished,  neglected exotic birds.

GCCB works diligently to provide a safe and nurturing environment.

This shelter works closely with adoption applicants to provide education about required care, future costs, and behaviors to expect in order ensure the bird is placed into its forever home.

The shelter also provides ongoing education and support to the volunteers.

I have been a volunteer at the Shelter for about a year and am very impressed with the dedication of the volunteers to the birds! We have McCaws, Amazons, Cockatoos, Quakers, Conures, Ring necks, a lorikeet, cockatiels and many finches, parakeets and lovebirds! Every one cares for all the birds and tries to entertain them while cleaning cages and providing food and water. As a nurse, I am impressed with the cleaning system! No cage goes un cleaned!! All the birds received food that is appropriate for them and fresh fruits and vegetables daily 7 days a week!
I am most comfortable with the the medium size to small birds but try to say good morning or hello every day to all of them. Now a McCaw is becoming my buddy! The medical care is also great. Anyone no matter who they are can bring up a concern and the day manager addresses it. Sometimes it is an old problem but sometimes it is a new issue and the vet is contacted. I also love the FB site, It is updated frequently, starring a bird who is ready for adoption. The Adoption committee works hard to find the appropriate matches for bird and new home. I really love working there!

I’ve been a volunteer for over a year now and love it! I wasn’t much of a bird person when I first started, but have come to really appreciate their intelligence and affection. Of course I have a few favorites, but they are all beautiful in their own way. The shelter goes above and beyond to make sure they are well taken care of and find them good homes. I hope to continue helping out for a long time. I look forward to my bird days!

I have been a lover and owner of birds since I was 12. When I moved to Chicago 4 years ago I discovered the rescue and began volunteering. I have made some wonderful friends who share the same goals for the birds and of course found my most recent love ❤️. Sunshine is a double yellow headed Amazon who was surrendered 2 years ago. We quickly bonded and after working with him for 6 months I adopted him and took him home. The rest is history and I love having this 22 year old fellow in my home and in my life.

I volunteer at Greater Chicago because I love parrots. I’ve been coming with my mom for about 8 years. While I don’t come as much as before because of school, I do participate when I’m able. My green check is from the shelter and I am so happy they brought us together.

Hi! My name is Kiwi. I was adopted from Greater Chicago Cage Bird Rescue. They took such good care of me there and found me a forever home. I got fresh vegetables every day and now I am eating healthy pellets too. A few years ago, I was found in an apartment after the people who had me got evicted. I kept screaming for them to come back but I guess they forgot. I was brought to the shelter in a box. I didn’t like that at all and plucked the feathers off my legs and tummy. My new mom says it looks like I am not wearing any pants. I am also missing a toe, but I can’t tell my mom how it happened. She let my feathers grow out and now I can fly good and never fall off my perch. One time when I fell my mom held me close and said, “it’s okay”. That was so nice and now I tell her that all the time. I am quite the talker and sing the Quaker song. If you are looking for a special bird like me, go to Greater Chicago and maybe you can be rescued too!

I have enjoyed volunteering at the GCCBS for a year and a half. This is a wonderful
shelter that cares for birds that were abandoned or abused. The birds all receive
great care and attention, including a monthly vet visit. My wife and I adopted another
cockatoo as we had lost our own pet after 35 years. It's also very fulfilling to see many
other unwanted and abused birds adopted, after the shelter takes great care to be
sure they are going to a good home.

I found this organization when searching for a place to board my parrots when I would go on vacation. After visiting first and then trusting Greater Chicago with my babies, I became a volunteer. The people here strive to provide the best in proper nutrition, excellent avian vet care, and the best family to adopt a specific bird. You could not find a better organization to board your bird or to adopt a bird.

I first came to the shelter as a volunteer with my 12 year old. I adopted our green cheek from Greater Chicago Caged Bird. My parrot was caged in a cage that was cleaned daily. He was given fresh fruit and vegetables every day. The monthly veterinary care and testing gave me comfort my bird was healthy! 4 years later we are a happy family ruled by the smallest bird in the house!

My time at the Greater Chicago Bird Cage Society has proven very fulfilling. I had the opportunity to care for birds that lack stable loving homes. During my time as a volunteer, I have met many interesting characters from the smallest finch to the biggest Macaw. I love helping these birds find their forever homes.

Three years ago, we promised our young daughter she could finally get a pet -- a bird! I had grown up with parakeets over the years and am allergic to everything with fur.

I had no idea there were animal shelters JUST for birds, and ecstatic to find that GCCBS was relatively close to our home. We went in looking for a parakeet, but the volunteer suggested a cockatiel and took us into the cockatiel room to meet the birds. We did not make a match that day, but on a follow-up visit to meet one cockatiel posted to their website (who already had multiple applications put in for him), the volunteer introduced us to Twinkie. He'd been been found outside and brought to the shelter a month before, and the volunteer knew his personality and thought he'd be a good match. It was true love. After our application and home video, we were approved and brought Twinkie home, where he has been one of the best birds I've ever known! Immediate member of the family, and we're sad for the family who lost him because he was well-loved and has been very loving to us.

They are strict with their policies. Do not be offended they don't take your word that you know birds. They didn't believe me until Twinkie flew up to my shoulder from the volunteer's and I didn't flinch -- not even when he kissed me and whispered in my ear. :) (I kissed him and whispered back!) They have a LOT of parents who come in to get a bird with their kid but who are afraid and/or clueless about birds. They will question why you aren't getting a cage for them that day (b/c I bought one!) because, yes, people don't know birds need cages. They only have the best interests of these *extremely* intelligent creatures at heart, and we appreciate them! They even recommended our new vet when our old one had become disappointing. "If GCCBS says it's true, then we trust them," is our mantra.

They also do bird boarding (or did) and that saved our bacon one time as well. Twinkie loved hanging out with his pals again. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Adopt a bird. Pre-loved birds are THE BEST!

My wife adopted our African Grey parrot from here and also volunteers. She loves it so much sometimes I worry she might just set up camp and live there. The volunteers are friendly and knowledgeable. When we adopted Samba the process was thorough and they want you to spend time with the birds before you can adopt them, which I think is great because parrots are not for the faint of heart. There are a lot of birds here who need good homes.

Bird shelters are an entirely different ballgame than the usual humane societies that have majority dogs and cats. Parrot after parrot is brought to GCCBS because they’re too messy, too loud, too destructive, they aren’t getting enough attention, they’re pulling out their own feathers, they were cheap at a superstore and now the kids don’t want to deal with them, or they’ve outlived their owners. Parrots are essentially still very much wild animals, and you can’t spay and neuter them like a dog or cat to help curb hormonal behavior.
85% of parrots are rehomed within the first 2 years of their lives. EIGHTY FIVE PERCENT!!!
It takes a special person to love a parrot. It takes an army of incredibly special people to love the parrots in a shelter. If you walk through our shelter you’ll find parrots mostly bald, parrots with signs that say “I BITE”, parrots screaming their lungs out when a dog walks by the window. Parrots are not (usually) brought to a shelter for good reasons; some have been locked up for months, some have been shoved in a basement or closet, some have health issues from a lifetime of misguided care and eating only sunflower seeds.
No ordinary person can volunteer at a parrot shelter, and the people who dive into work at GCCBS are nothing less than extraordinary. If you see a volunteer here it is because they LOVE these birds. They devote their days to seeing these unique, complicated, sensitive, intelligent, and sometimes dangerous animals get the care and attention they all so desperately need.
You spend days with tears in your eyes as another owner brings in another bird who hides, terrified, in the corner of their cage. Then you spend days with tears in your eyes because the macaw that has been waiting for 8 years finally is going home to a family.

I cannot say enough good things about the incredible people who volunteer their time at this shelter to improve the lives of these animals that are so very much misunderstood. Behind the mountain there is always another mountain, but they show up ready to try again every day anyway, and the parrots lives are better for them.

I have been volunteering with GCCBC/Shelter for at least 5 years, where it has been so much fun to get to know the birds. We spend as much time with them as we can, but they really need homes. At the shelter they are well cared for, and get evaluated for health and temperament. There are around 100 birds of all kinds at any one time, that are attended to every single day by an all volunteer staff. They are fed well and get lots of fresh food. Many special needs and older birds, too.

Great nonprofit shelter for homeless and abandoned pet birds. They do amazing work giving these birds a temporary home while finding adopters to become their forever homes. Entirely volunteer run so you know 100% of your donations go to the birds. Adoption process can take a little longer than expected due to the shelter being all volunteers, but completely understandable. Volunteering is very rewarding as you get to interact with these birds and watch as they find their forever homes.

With just a handful of dedicated volunteer staff, this organization provides shelter and safety for pet birds who have no place else to go. We provide daily care, 365 days a year, to all types of birds, from a tiny finch to large macaws. We also attend to the medical needs of the elderly and handicap birds to improve quality of life. These are the FORGOTTEN Pets...Dog and Cat rescues get much attention, while every year, hundreds of birds pass through this shelter and are placed in qualified, screened home, or are kept safe until a home can be found. We have no funding other than minimal public donations.
We are one of only a few reputable rescues for birds in the Chicago-land area.

I have been with this bird rescue for many years. It is one of the best in Chicago area. We have very dedicated, hard working volunteers. We put the care of our birds first and foremost. We find loving homes for birds that have been relinquished to our care. Our birds are cared for by an avian veterinarian on a regular basis. We treat all of our birds the same, whether a finch or a macaw. We provide them with loving care, adequate housing, and a well balanced diet. We are 100% volunteer based and work solely on donations. Thank you.
