I love this place. I have fostered puppies and kittens during the last 4 yrs. I also feed the feral cats in their colony located on the premises. The facility is always clean and tidy, while the staff are great! I adopted my first dog in 30 yrs as a foster failure since I fell in love with him. And recently, I adopted a toy cockapoo puppy mill rescue. I wouldn't go anywhere else to adopt a pet.

I am a foster for this shelter and love everything they do. I adopted my first puppy from them that I had fostered from 2 weeks old who was orphaned. Such a good boy. They gave me all the supplies and support I needed. I love fostering kittens and puppies to get them ready for their forever homes. There are so many homeless pets that need a loving home, I recommend checking out their animals before buying from a breeder or pet store. They make the best pets, very thankful for love of any kind. So many of the older dogs get overlooked. If I had a bigger house and yard I would adopt even more.
I have been a volunteer since 2013. The staff are friendly and very appreciative of all the help they receive from volunteers. The shelter is always clean and the medical care of the animals is top notch.
Great Plains SPCA is a compassionate organization with a clear focus. It sets the bar high for how animal shelters should operate and what the animal welfare community can be. Continuity and quality of care to create a community of no suffering are at the center of everything. While they are a brick and mortar animal shelter servicing 7 municipalities, they also have comprehensive programs that focus on matchmaking, keeping pets and people together and outreach through education, resources and medical care. The care of the animals while looking for a forever home or waiting for their owner to find them is top notch with a focus on behavior, training, enrichment and specialized medical care. The staff is goal oriented, compassionate and create an engaging environment through accountability and passion for not just the pets but the people who love them!

Quality of animal care at the Independence campus has gone way downhill and customer service appears to have gone with it. Facility no longer looks and smells clean and the animals appear uncomfortable and unhappy. Staff was rude and I was not even allowed to meet a dog on the adoption floor because he was "unavailable" bc he needed a dental. They could not tell me when he might be having that dental or when I might be able to even meet him. He had already been there for more than 2 months. I was ready to take him home that day which would have opened a kennel. And yet they claim to be over capacity and are turning animals away?
Review from Guidestar
We attempted to adopt a dog at this location. We put a secondary hold on a dog and they didn't explain to us that the first hold could be extended. We placed our hold when there was 3 hours left on the first hold. The SPCA was rude, unprofessional, uncaring and it seems like all they care about is money.
NMHPKC has completed over 10,000 spay/neuter surgeries at it's clinic in Merriam, KS. In 2008, Kansas City area shelters reported a decrease in euthanasias to 13,000 from over 25,000 size years earlier. They provide high volume, high quality, low cost spay/neuter services to the Kansas City community. This is the key to reducing the number of animals killed nationwide. This is a professionally managed organization that is rapidly expanding it's outreach. In addition to s/n services, it provides animal adoption, outreach to animals in substandard living conditions, and a feral cat program. They are dedicated to the No-Kill movement outlined by Nathan Winograd. I've seen firsthand how this effectively this group functions and I would highly recommend supporting this organization.
