We adopted our dog Avro from GLWR in 2011 and travelled down to Michigan to see the rescue and pick him up. It is an incredible facility and the volunteers there are doing amazing work. Avro passed away this year at the age of 14 and GLWR provided support as needed throughout his life and sent us very heartfelt condolences on his passing. This is a group of people who care deeply about animals and show their passion through the love the dogs in their care receive.
Sadly, I had to say goodbye my Weim in March. I knew his health was failing, and had reached out to the rescue before he passed To get approved and get on the list. The people I dealt with were so kind and understanding. Even offered help with my poor Moosey, who was having hip problems before I had to say goodbye. So sympathetic and professional. My new placement has been a dream. Come true. Seamless transition. Amazing communication. I am still in communication with the volunteers who helped me obtain my new boy. They are fantastic and I cannot praise them enough.
GLWR gave me my baby girl Harley when they discovered a puppy mill. Her & her sibs at 13wks were surrendered with the agreement to spay & neuter the frequently producing parents. I have stayed in touch with other siblings parents & their foster mom for almost 11yrs now. I have also fostered for them in the past & they do an amazing job for foster parents.
We love GLWR. We have adopted 2 dogs from them in the last 10 years. They are always there to be supportive. Great people and great dogs.
I not only rescue all of my weims through Great Lakes but I work closely with Tonette and the other volunteers to help transport dogs when needed. These are just the best people I've ever met who care more about the welfare of these dogs than they do about their own needs. I could write a novel about how much I love this rescue. They are professional, compassionate, selfless, and always do what's in the best interest of the dog. I could not recommend them more.
We adopted a four year old Weim from GLWR. The whole adoption process was very thorough and professional. We answered all of their questions and provided references (and they were verified). Everyone we talked with was very helpful and provided as much knowledge as possible about on our girl we adopted. We are previous Weim owners and knew we wanted another. GLWR is an excellent rescue agency. They are very helpful and continue to check in with us to see how we are doing. We say we’re so lucky that our girl from GLWR “adopted” us.
Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue does an amazing job. They are fantastic at matching the right dog with the right family and we've been very pleased. Weve adopted twice and our current new family member is Dexter. He is loving to both people and other dogs. The organization works very hard to make these beautiful dogs have a happy life.
Great Lakes helped me find my best friend! From the application process to the meet and greet and follow up after we made it home I am forever grateful! I thought I was going to rescue a dog but it turns out he rescued me! Rico chose me the second he saw me ❤️
We have been long time supporters of GLWR. We have rescued 4 weims and understand full well what it takes to raise these dogs. GLWR does an outstanding job of not only rescuing but educating new owners on the demands and needs for these dogs. Most people see the beauty and fail to recognize the energy. GLWR takes the time to teach, coach and vet new Weim family members.
The vetting process is top notch and very thorough.
So proud to be donors to this wonderful organization.
We adopted our Oakley from Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue. They did an amazing job vetting him, he was a perfect fit. Too many people get Dogs without researching the breed and rescues are critical to helping rehome these amazing creatures.
We adopted 2 Weimaraners from this organization. They were easy to work with, professional, caring about the welfare of the dogs. Highly recommend. Our first from them was Buddy- we renamed him Leo. He was 2 when we got him, 15 when we lost him. Louie was known as Mr.P, obviously we renamed him. His age was unknown- estimated to be 5ish, we had him almost 10 years.
Great Lakes Weim Rescue has paced two dogs with our family. Best interest of the dogs has always been top of mind for this organization. This can sometimes lead to the need to make tough decisions and I have seen them do that when required. Tireless efforts to find carefully fitted forever homes for great dogs have been consistently delivered, resulting in great outcomes for worthy dogs and families. Ed Delana
We love the breed and were thrilled to adopt through GLWR! The team and foster family made this transition so easy. We were given everything you could need for a new dog for the first month include a blanket and stuffed animal that smelled like home. This is Susie. She was so anxious when we first got her but now 6 months later she's so happy and loves her home! Very greatful to GLWR!
I can not say enough good things about this resuce. We adopted Reagan a year ago and could not be more in love with her. She was a challenge at the beginning, being an Amish puppy mill rescue. We were given a lot of help in learning how to manage her special needs. From the moment we met her, we have received a lot of support from all the food, toys and bedding that they sent us home with on her initial adoption to all the coaching along the way to help us turn this dog into a fun, happy, healthy dog.
We were paired with our Big Jack. He is such a nice boy. Couldn't be happier with the support we received from the volunteers and president. They do great work and the dogs are their top priority.
We got our boy Vader from GLWR over the summer. Not only did they send up with a ton of supplies to get started, they checked in after and were available for any support we needed helping our pup settle in. We’ll definitely be adding a second dog to our household, and it will definitely be another GLWR Weim!
GLWR was amazing to work with! They paired us with our boy, Leo, who has been an amazing edition to our family. They were very transparent about Leo’s behaviors and past and we are so thankful to all of the volunteers that we worked with!!
My husband and I adopted Winchester from GLWR and she is the most incredible dog. The rescue was very thorough investigating our background. They made sure to see what our home looked like and if our lifestyle was suitable. We already had a weim and were looking for a second and they made sure they got along before allowing her to come home with us. We would gladly adopt another weim from GLWR in the future! They care so much for their dogs and are truly ensuring the homes they’re going to are the best for the pups. Thank you GLWR!
This group is top notch. They paired our family with a wonderful dog. Porscha fits in amd acts like she has been here forever. Thank you very much.
We have adopted 4 wonderful weimaraner through GLWR. Each time we are gently coached and guided into the perfect fit for us.
Wonderful people doing wonderful things. They have a great passion for what they do. This can be evidenced by the program they run. We hope to be able someday in the future to adopt another great weim from them.

My sons and I adopted a great weim from GLWR. They were very thorough during the application process. I was so touched with the program when arrived to meet potential Weims to adopt. We are blessed they do what they do for these wonderful Weims. There is so much love and care given to these rescues and surrenders.
Very consistent over the years, same mission, same intense passion for saving and rehoming weimaraners! Very honorable charity.
I had to make the heartbreaking decision to rehome/surrender my beautiful baby boy Floopy during the summer. I looked everywhere for somewhere that would take him and that he would be safe and taken care of. I found Toni and Freat Lakes Weimaraner Rescue and contacted her immediately. She got back to me so fast. Toni drove over an hour and a half to meet me half way to pick up my sweet boy. I knew he was in such good hands. She is wonderful and open every time I text her asking about an update on my sweet boy. I would recommend GLWR to anyone looking to adopt or rehome their weim. 10/10
We adopted Sir Anthony Rizzo (yes November 2016….!!!! )
The process was thorough in getting the dog and us! We were confident we knew the positives and potential negatives.
He is a beautiful boy and an important part of our family now. Thank you GLWR for all you do for our beloved Weims.
The kind folks at GLWR have assisted us twice by matching us with perfect family companions! They took the time to understand our busy lifestyle and the need for a four legged partner who could work in our family printing and newspaper business by greeting customers, running errands and accompanying their people at local events. Both Katie and Eham settled into our lives and quickly became welcomed visitors to local businesses throughout our area. We cannot thank Tonette and all the GLWR staff for the tremendous work they do with the dogs and entrusting is with our wonderful companions.
Great Lakes Weim Rescue helped us find not one, but two new weimaraners to add to our family. The volunteers did a great job matching the dogs' personalities with our family lifestyle.
We have adopted 3 boys from GLWR. The whole organization has been absolutely amazing to work with. I know every penny is going to the health and care of each pup that comes through thier doors!
We have adopted 3 weims from GLWR over the span of 16 years and they look out for the best interests of the dogs at all times. They want to find forever homes for the dogs. I can't imagine my life without our dogs and they are so special and we are very grateful to this charity for their care and love of the dogs
Best rescue ever! They truly care about the pups they serve. We have adopted from GLWR twice in the last 5 years, and will do so again.
Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue selflessly opens their hearts and doors for a very special breed of dogs. They truly shine as a beacon of compassion. Their unwavering dedication to Weimaraner welfare is evident in every rescue mission. The team’s commitment to finding forever homes is not just heartwarming but also commendable. Through tireless efforts, they’ve become a lifeline for our four-legged friends, turning tales of abandonment into stories of hope.
We have adopted two furry family members from them. One as a young pup and the other as mid age They ensure not only is the pup a fit for your family but is your family a fit for the pup. Always keeping in mind the welfare of the pup.
Kudos to each and every member/foster/volunteer/donor of GLWR. This organization is fostered with compassion and love.
We have rescued two amazing Weims from Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue and have nothing but positive things to say about their organization and the people who give selflessly and tirelessly to ensure their pups are cared for well in their forever homes. They have an intentional screening process that really digs deep and gets to know people so that they set these dogs up in their forever homes with the right fit. It is so evident in our interactions with them how much they care. They also set you up with so much more than you need when you first adopt, like food, treats, todays, resources, support and knowing someone is just a phone call away. We adopted our second Weim, Abby in January and we still get texts from the volunteers asking how it is going and if we need any support. They give great advice, are so personable and show how much they truly care in the way they treat their dogs and potential families. I would recommend them over and over!
We have adopted 2 beautiful Weims with them the past 2 years. They do an amazing job screening to make sure the dogs are in the best fit home. They are always there answering my questions 7 days a week.
GLWR Not only cares about rescuing animals in need but the people behind them as well. I have had the honor of both fostering and adopting from this organization and I have nothing but positive experiences.
I was sad and sick. My 14 year old black lab/boxer mix passed away in December, I developed shingles, and was home for months. We already had a female Weimaraner and I wanted a blue boy for us. I started watching the rescues and found Tommy! I filled out an application and was promptly contacted by the administrators of GLWR . In a few days we drove from Southern Illinois to Wisconsin where Tommy was being fostered. He and Heidi got along well and Tommy is now part of our family. We all love our blue boy!
We have had the pleasure of working with this amazing organization to get two amazing dogs. They ensure that all their dogs go to an appropriate home. Stringent applications and home visits are conducted to make sure their rescues are properly cared for. and loved. Their dedication to this breed is second to none and I couldn’t be happier to recommend them!
I appreciate the dedication and first class care they provide for our beloved breed. The application process is thorough and carefully thought out; they want the best for this extraordinary breed and rightfully so. I am grateful for their hard work and extensive volunteer time.
I recently adopted my first Weim, Cleo, from GLWR a few weeks ago. From the first conversation I had with someone from GRWR, I knew this organization went above and beyond to help find these pups the best possible home to give them the happiest life. The love everyone has for these dogs is just outstanding, I wish every rescue was this dedicated. Absolutely great people, great dogs, and a great org.
This group is amazing! I happened to hear about 2 adult weims in Craigslist that were basically being given away. I was not in the position to get them but was hoping someone could help them before they ended up in a bad situation. I sent their information to GLWR and they were right on it. These 2 lucky weims were on their way to a better life in less than 24 hours. I am so appreciative of them and all of their dedication and hard work!
Adopted 2 dogs from GLWR. One in 2006 and one in 2017 after our first passed away. Amazing organization!
My husband and I have adopted 2 Weimaraners from Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue and could mot be happier . We live in Tennessee so we drove a long way to bring our precious boys home . We have been very impressed with GLWR and those who volunteer their time, money and love for the Weimaraner breed. Anyone who loves this breed should consider adopting thru GLWR
Attached are pictures of our adopted babies, Gordie sunning himself and Brodie resting before he passed breaking our hearts
Oh my gosh… their volunteers work day and night searching for homes for unwanted Weimaraners. I just received a phone call after 8 p.m. How they never become discouraged or “burnt out” is remarkable.
They are very thorough when approving an adopter…..they follow-up with you if a Weim becomes available and if you tell them “you’re not quite ready” they understand …giving you the time you need. I know my donations are spent wisely! Thank you GLWR!!
The volunteers for this rescue work tirelessly and unselfishly for the dogs they take in. Such a professional organization. They work hard to entire their dogs go to good homes who understand the breed. I’ve adopted several Weimaraners from then over the past 16 years

I have been fostering for GLWR for 15 years. My love affair with this breed started with the adoption of my first “wild child” Willow. She was crazy and so loveable. This rescue truly cares about the dogs they save and rehome.
Their volunteer & foster network is remarkable. Small but mighty and so dedicated. I’m proud to spend time helping them find great homes for Weimaraners in OH, MI, IL, WI, IN and Ontario, Canada.

After owning a Weim (Hanna) for 15 years I decided to foster (Milly) who had an incurable skin disease.....like all Weims appreciated everything you did for her even in her discomfort. Then I fostered Gabby who I ended up adopting. She passed away at 14. If I were younger I would definately foster again. Great Lakes Rescue is the BEST for helping Weims, adoptions and assisting fostering. Keep up the good work!!!!!
This rescue has helped me doesn’t matter how old l get l will be able to have a Weimaraner by my side l grew up with one there is no other Dog to have Thank you Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue
What can i say,Tonette bogner is the most compassionate person about rescuing these beautiful weimaraners. I have adopted 3 from her rescue over the last 6 yrs. She took her time to make sure you and the dog were a good fit. I have adopted many from other rescues, but tonette made you feel like family, and stayed connected with for any questions or problems that might pop up.Great Lakes weimaraner rescue is the best.
We adopted Bennie from Great Les Weimaraner Rescue as well as Trent author of Love is. Dog and Some Crayons Weimaraner coloring book to benefit Great Lakes Weimaraner Tescue.
Adopted Robin in July 2018, 6 weeks after my older Weim died. I thought I would be waitlisted which was fine because I didn't feel quite ready so applied to get on the list. I think it was meant to be though because I got Robin within a week. He's been the sweetest most loving Weim of all 4 of my previous Weims. Just an all around great boy.
We had submitted an application at the end of August and received a response very quickly for a bonded pair of weimaraners. Though we very warmly greeted by their fantastic foster family and picked them up on July 2nd, they weren't a good fit for our family. What I really wanted to convey, though, is what a wonderful experience we had with the Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue. They were upfront and honest with us, though we personally were inexperienced and didn't understand fully how a couple anxious dogs that were bonded while being such large and marvelous creatures would end up playing out. That being said, though they were not a good fit for our family, we learned soooooo much!
GLWR took updates and responded quickly. When we did end up needing to return them, the foster family met us half way since we lived a ways off from them, which was incredibly gracious since we didn't actually ask them to do so. I should pause and say that the dogs we brought home were in good health and were surprisingly well-behaved; it was just a size and anxiety issue that didn't fit well with our children that prompted the return. This experience gave us the ability to reflect on the needs and desires of our family in considering a good fit for a pet.
Since that time, we adopted two rescue dogs, one of which was a foster. We are currently fostering a third dog who was in one of the recent hurricanes in Louisiana. I never really thought of fostering prior to our experience with Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue. They graciously gave us the perspective we needed to understand what was a good fit for both our family and the dogs. It has been such a good experience going forward with rescue dogs because of what we learned starting with this rescue. I am very thankful for the experience, and though the dogs we were considering with Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue didn't work out, two others (and probably a third) now have a forever home. I really appreciated the way their rescue works because it inspires others without even trying! I will always remember our experience as a beautiful opportunity for growth in our family and for helping other wonderful pets! Thank you, Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue!
I am a new foster with GLWR and we are so so happy to be a part of it. The application process is easy and thorough. The team has been nothing but a pleasure so far.
I am a foster mom for Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue. I couldn’t be more honored to be part of such an amazing rescue group. The team that Tonette has created is beyond incredible and like a second family. Tonette Bogner, our President, is the most caring, selfless person I have ever met in my life. She is an amazing mentor that I can only hope someday to live up to.
We have joined this group as a foster home after adopting our own weim, Tank, from Tonette. He was everything we were looking for and more; almost as if they molded him for us from scratch!
Being a foster mom for eight years with another rescue, I had never been on the adopting side before Tank. We couldn’t have chose a better group to adopt from. They were so thorough with their adoption process and requirements. Yet, at the same time, made the process so smooth and seamless. They went above and beyond to ensure that we had everything we were looking for and more in our next weim.
Their number one priority is to give these Weims a second chance at the life they deserve with their new forever families. The dedication, wealth of knowledge, and skill set behind this team I am so proud to be a part of astounds me daily.
My family and I can’t thank them enough for the weim they have so graciously brought into our lives and for all of the fosters that they entrusted in us to care for. We are forever indebted to this rescue for the impact that this group has made on my kids.
As a volunteer for Great Lakes Weimaraner rescue i am humbled esch day by the dedication of the volunteers..
The commitment shown to the rescued Weimaraners is very heartfelt by all. We all love the breed and want the very best for every dog surrendered to GLWR.
I’ve been a foster Mom Volunteer and transporter for GLWR for 3 years and I couldn’t be prouder to be apart of a better Weimaraner rescue. We take in so many pups from various different situations. Teamwork really makes us a wonderful group. We shared our foster pups antics, help each other when things come up and there is always a pup in need. GLWR goes above and beyond to help all of our pups healthy and into loving furever homes. All of the volunteers work so hard to make things happen. It’s an amazing feeling, watching a Weim meet their forever family. Your heart ❤️ fills with happiness and when you get an occasional update, seeing how happy and loved they are, how their 2nd chance has worked out so well for everyone involved.
I am a volunteer for GLWR and I could not be happier to be part of their team. This rescue prevents weimaraner dogs from being sent to shelters by offering owners that need to relinquish their Weim bright futures for these dogs. GLWR has a network of fosters with breed experience to help these dogs transition into new homes and families. The foster and adoption coordinators work closely together together to match the best home for dogs under the care of the rescue. Ever Weim kept out of a shelter leave room for another dog needing rehoming.
This group supports a sizable community including 5 primary states as well as parts of Canada. A great team supporting a wonderful breed of dogs and working endlessly to find that perfect family for every dog relinquished to the rescues care.
I have fostered dogs for many years through this non-profit rescue. GLWR is very dedicated to the breed and always finds a way in its heart to fit in the “just one more” that face dire circumstances. Many have physical limitations which would make them hard to place but they are not turned away. Much respect for the long -term commitment for support of the breed by director Tonette and her staff for rescuing Weims in Michigan and surrounding states. The passion for and love of these dogs clearly shows devotion to providing the best homes possible for all that come through their door.
Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue is filled with wonderful, caring people, passionate about giving animals the best life! They work to fit every dog with the perfect family and provide the support and care that all need for smooth, happy transitions. We have fostered 4 dogs with Great Lakes and have 2 foster fails that make our family complete. Thanks for all you do, Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue!!! ❤️❤️❤️
In October 2019 we adopted an 8 month old female Weim, now named Bella. We had lost our first Weim earlier that year at the age of 15. That fall, soon after filling out an application and going through the adoption process we were matched with our Bella. We were initially seeking another male, but this girl stole our hearts and it was love at first site. She’s been with us for two years now. Soon after we adopted Bella we began fostering as well. We have opened our home and hearts to several foster Weims. I could not be happier being part of this organization and volunteering my time.
In May 2021, GLWR matched me with this guy. His name is Brody. Brody was about 16 months old when he was removed from a horrible house where he was confined 24 hours a day. He was never let outdoors. He had to fight for food and water with about 30 other weims confined in the same house. His nails had never been trimmed. His tail was docked by the owners or some other person who was obviously not a medical or veterinary professional. He had worms, eye and ear infections, and untreated wounds from which he still bears physical scars. He was one of 26 dogs that survived that house and were fortunate enough to be cared for by GLWR foster families. GLWR treated his physical wounds, provided him with medication and food, and paid for his rehabilitation. For the first time in his life, Brody was allowed outdoors. He was exercised. His foster family gave him a bed, toys, treats, guidance, training, freedom and love - all the things he so deserved but had been denied his entire life. Brody lived with a foster family in the Chicago area for awhile and he lived in the Grand Haven area home of GLWR’s Executive Director. He’s pretty well traveled these days. GLWR went to extreme lengths to find a forever home for him, and I am honored that they trusted me enough to let me take Brody home. As it turned out, the deplorable house he was removed from on October 30, 2020, is less than 15 miles from his forever home with me. Though geographically close, the beginning and end points of his journey are worlds apart. I am eternally grateful to GLWR, not only matching me with Brody, but for their painstaking efforts to match each dog in their care with the best possible home. These are top-notch people who found me another best friend, and, in the process, restored my faith in humanity.
We adopted Deisel (FKA Benson) from GLWR and so thankful for them! They take amazing care of the animals in their rescue, ensure they are going to great forever homes, and are the kindest people ever. I cannot thank them enough! Shout out to Diane Pastor Benson for being an amazing foster as well!
We had a Weimaraner that changed our life and thought we should get her a sister. I had always wanted a blue, I started looking at rescuing and found GLWR. The communication was good from the start. The closest foster was 1.5 hours way, no worries! We packed up the family and the current fur child and went for a visit. The foster was great! So informative and was able to answer questions and actually give us some insight, as we were newer to the breed and our current dog was one of a kind. Over all I would recommend GLWR to anyone looking for a Weimaraner! We will definitely be back.
I started out with adopting my girl 11 years ago. They made sure she was a perfect fit for me. Within a couple years I started fostering also. I have fostered 13 as of today. I also have done a few home inspections to help others with the process of adopting. The support from other members is fantastic!!
Our Kirsche was adopted from Great Lakes Weim Rescue. She is sweet and adorable with a lot a spunk added in. GLWR is fantastic, supportive organization, always a phone or text away in the adoption process. Most of all they are truly the most kind, loving organization with the heart of weims at their core. We love GLWR!
When we lost our first Weim we knew we had to have another one. We did some research and we found GLWR. After filling out the application which was very thorough, we were in contact with Rachel Greene, the coordinator at the time. The communication was great, and we were very impressed with the whole vetting process. We went to GLWR to meet four Weims and came home with one of the best dogs ever!! Cali has stolen our hearts in three short years!! We couldn’t love her more!!
We have rescued our two weimaraners through GLWR. Both dogs have been absolute treasures to us. They do a lot with very little funds and a great volunteer network. Our second dog, Mac, was improperly cared for after being run over by a vehicle from his previous family. He was carrying one of his hind legs around and couldn't use it when he got to the rescue a little over a year old. They were encouraged to put him down but were able to get his leg amputated and he recovered wonderfully. He is a hoot and lives a very happy life. These are amazing dogs that need a lot of affection and unfortunately a lot of people get them without realizing the commitment. I don't know what we'd do without their efforts.
I adopted Tess at the age of 10. I love this organization Rachel worked with me to find the perfect dog. I wanted a senior. I had 2 1/2 wonderful years with Tess and loved sending updates and pictures to Great Lakes.
When we lost our beloved family dog we grieved for months before entertaining the idea of adopting another one. With our two sons grown and with families of their own, we questioned whether or not we would even be good dog parents. The kind folks at Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue were patient with our endless questions and welcomed us to visit with many precious dogs that were needing homes, singling out several that they though would be good fits for us at work and home. In the end, our sweet Katie chose us and we were blessed with her unconditional love for over two years before we lost her to a cancerous tumor. To say we were heartbroken is the most grievous understatement. The folks at Great Lakes were supportive of us during Katie's illness and showed great sympathy when we lost her. Several months later, we returned to Great Lakes Weim Rescue and again were paired with another sweet soul who captured our hearts at first sight. Our Eham immediately settled into our home life and became the official greeter at our family business. He is well known throughout our community as he is a frequent visitor to local businesses and venues as he accompanies us on errands, deliveries, and social engagements. We cannot thank the folks at Great Lakes enough for their devotion to this majestic breed of dogs and to those of us who seek to find companions that fit our families perfectly!
I cannot say enough about how amazing this organization is. My husband and I have adopted two Weims from them so far and have been so impressed with their knowledge, dedication and commitment to this amazing breed. They take great care to match a dog to the right family so that the dog has the best chance for success. I love this rescue and the people involved so much that I hosted a fundraiser for them to help raise money to build a new rescue center. I wholeheartedly support this organization and will continue to rescue Weims through them for as long as they exist.
I can’t say enough about GLWR. I have had the pleasure of being a part of a great group of people helping these wonderful animals. It is humbling to see the dedication and commitment to help the dogs. It must be about 10 years since I adopted my first dog Marco - a sweet boy with special needs. He was a wonderful boy and we lost him after only 3 years. Lucy was my first foster failure, but I did manage to foster and find homes for 8 dogs which was beyond anything I have done before. So many ask how you can do it, but the alternative is so much worse. if you can love em and leave them you couldn’t do a greater service for a rescue. They need all the help both by volunteering, fostering and financially so they can get to do the job they do.. Seeing the dogs go to a loving home is so awesome. We then adopted an older gentleman - actually he was a foster failure too. Mister was 9 when he came to us and lived to over 14 great years. We now have Lucy, Morpheus and Blue and every dog is amazing. ‘Tonette and the group always seemed to know how to pick the dogs for our home. Their commitment to see them go to the right homes, work with you in every way to help if there is an adjustment time and just be part of an awesome group of people. I just can’t say enough about them. I only wish I could have more, do more and give more!! They are all a deserving group of people. Thanks for all you do for the dogs and the joy you bring to the families.
I started out as an adopter when we brought Casey into our home. I got involved with doing home checks on future prospective adopters. Then I started helping with transports. During one such transport I decided that I would foster the young southern boy I was taking to the rescue. That started something.... I can say now that I have fostered 14 different dogs and helped find them their forever homes. Each and every one were special in their own way. They all took a piece of my heart with them when their new families came and took them home with them but it was such a great experience knowing I helped find the right home for them!!! This is truly a great organization of caring individuals who will do what is necessary for each and every Weim that crosses their path!!!
Great experience with Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue!!! We recently adopted a dog from GLWR and the whole process and every contact person was very thorough, professional and helpful. They helped match us with the perfect dog and described his personality (both the good and less desirable traits) very accurately. Considering they are all volunteer staffed, I’m amazed at how quickly we were approved, matched and got our new family member especially during Covid. The number of dogs they help is absolutely amazing! What a dedicated team to this important cause!
A few years back we lost one of our dogs ,she wasn't a Weimaraner but she was the alfa and when we lost her our 3 year old Spirit was lost . We had no plan on getting another dog but he was so miserable we found GLWR and saw a beautiful little 7 year old girl named Marley Mae. It was instant love before we even met her. I love that they do such a great back round check on people what to adopt ,it took which seemed like forever but it was so worth it. It was a 18 hour round trip to get her but it wasn't the last trip :-). A while later they posted Bosco and again it was love at first sight. And again the 18 hour drive Labor Day weekend no less , but again so worth it. Now we are terrible foster parents because they fail every time and stay forever. These people are great and there love for the dogs shows ,knowing they only want what's best for them. We have adopted ,fostered and picked up dogs when needed . Picked up a very old Weimaraner who was 40 pounds under weight and could hardly walk. My vet said around 14 ,we got him healthy and well another foster fail. I will help this nonprofit anytime they ask . Adopt from they you won't be sorry.
I am so happy GLWR exists. My brother's weim got a second chance at a better life because of them. I have seen pictures on their FB page and cried to see how happy Hunter is now. I can see how far he has come. I am so glad I made the decision to surrender Hunter, so he can become the best possible Weim he can.
We have an adopted our boy “Sir Anthony Rizzo” (adopted after the Cubs World Series won in 2016). He came to GLWR from a family with small children and “Blusky” (now Sir Anthony Rizzo) had possession issues.
He was well vetted for a new family without children and we (who were well vetted too) were lucky to become Rizzo’s new family.
He is a wonderful special dog and stole our hearts.
His surrender family and us are in touch (through sharing updates on GLWR site and they recognized their boy and contacted us). and we send updates and share pictures.
I honor them as the first family that loved him and we are grateful to GLWR that made our story possible
We lost our last Weim, Juno, in July 2019. She was the last of our pack of four Weims. We felt lost without a dog in the house. We contacted GLWR and they found the perfect match. In September, we picked up Smokey-Girl, who is absolutely wonderful. She is just right pup for us. I was impressed with the professionalism of GLWR. We recommend GLWR for anyone looking for a wonderful and deserving rescue.
In 2017, we worked with GRLW to adopt our Libby. Their application process was very thoughtful and we were soon matched up with a dog. When we went to meet her, it did not work out with her. There just wasn’t a connection which was weird and very sad for us. The director was so kind and so patient. She introduced us to others and got a feel for us. She then introduced us to a new arrival. And there was an instant connection, like she was just waiting for us! Tonette saw it too and confirmed that she was the one for us. We went home with a new family member and a bevy of supplies to make sure we were well stocked with more than we could ever imagine we needed. We highly recommend GLWR.
We adopted our Roscoe two years ago! He is a big love and the perfect family companion. We credit the GLWR for making such a great match. Their thorough application process, interview, and really listening to potential adopters allowed us to meet 4 great, potential dogs. We would adopt from them again without hesitation!
GLWR was my first experience with using a breed rescue. They couldn’t have been any better. They promptly responded to my application and provided instructions for submitting home photos as I was out of state. I was put in contact with the foster and within a couple weeks met my girl Kera and brought her home. Highly recommend them!
Dedicated volunteers who help many dogs find foster and forever homes including two of my own.

I adopted my Weimaraner Trent from Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue, Inc. They are well organized and care about getting a good match with the dogs they serve and potential adopters. I also have volunteered to do home visits for this group over the years.
Trent is a certified pet therapy dog with Bright and Beautiful and volunteers in Michigan with the Fur Angels and Pet-a-Pet. He also authored his own Love is a Dog and Some Crayons - Weimaraner Coloring Book that is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.com to benefit Great Lakes Weimaraner Rescue, an excellent rescue that helped him find his forever home with me.
We've adopted two Weims from the GLWR and had a great experience both times. Our first dog (Chief), we applied, were vetted for ownership (compared to go to a general humane society = take a dog home), and asked what we were looking for (gender, age, size, good with kids, etc). When a dog came along meeting those requirements, we got a call and couldn't be happier! Adopting our second dog was as easy as calling and bring Chief out for a visit to meet Hue, who is a senior dog they had taken in from a family no longer able to take care of him. Before we could take him home, they got him up to date with the vet and had him neutered. With both dogs we were sent home with a HUGE bag full of toys, wet dog food, paperwork, blankets, collars, etc. The support of GLWR itself, and those who've adopted dogs, is just amazing. GLWR does a great job of finding Weims that are in need of love, and finding people who want to love them

Had the opportunity to adopt an 8 y/o Vizsla from GLWR. The dog was shipped from Michigan to Florida to Michigan again. She had been in numerous shelters and fosters. GLWR ended up with her and it was apparent that they really didn't want her. She was never examined by their Vey. Picked her up she had kennel cough, bi-lateral ear infections and urinary tract infection. Poor thing was attention starved and under exercised. GLWR is no more than a nonprofit tax loophole. The property is poorly maintained and the house looks like a chapter out of "Hoarding Buried Alive" I'm sure their hearts are in the right place but they really are not suited to do this work My advise walk away
Review from Guidestar
I first met GLWR when I was privileged enough to be approved to adopt Sierra. I say privileged as she was a long term alumni of the rescue and was loved my many. Not only did I adopt Sierra but the entire group adopted me. I have since became a volunteer and fostered for GLWR. It is a wonderful extended family who not only will do anything for the pups but also for the people in the group. When I was adopting a loving dog I got a lot more than I expected and am proud to call everyone in this club my family. If you are looking for an outstanding organization this is a gold star standard to go by.
I adopted my weim from GLWR 5 1/ 2years ago. He had been fostered for 13 months - between the US and Canada. I really appreciated the time and thoroughness that this organization spent on ensuring these dogs would go to suitable homes with owners who know about this breed of dogs, their characteristics, and their needs. Being new to having a dog, and one that had some behavioural issues, I really appreciated the willingness the members of this organization showed me to help listen, understand and offer ideas to help me learn and work through these challenges with my adopted weim. He is a wonderful dog, and very much loved by both me and my entire neighbourhood. It has been an incredible experience to adopt a rescued dog, and to see him blossom and change into such a happy, loving, and playful good-natured dog. My life would not be the same without him. Thanks GLWR. I have had such a positive experience, and have spoken with many folks out hiking and walking dogs about this...several have adopted through GLWR since.
My husband and I adopted our first Weim from GLWR nearly 2 years ago. The love and care that the GLWR volunteers have for these pups was obvious from the moment I first spoke with our boy's foster mom. We were put through an extensive vetting process, which as an animal lover, I really appreciate. It's just as important to them as it is to me that these dogs ultimately find the perfect home. Words cannot describe how grateful we are to GLWR for bringing our Weimaraner, Jerry, into our lives. He is one of the best things that have ever happened to us, and it's all thanks to the amazing people at GLWR! When the time comes to add another Weim to our family, we know just the place to go! ;)
We got maddie in 2015 from GLWR just after we got maddie our other weim Britten got cancer he passed away shortly after maddie has helped us thru the hard time thank you GLWR maddie is the grey silver
GLWR does excellent work. I feel honored to have worked with them to transport and help in other ways to spread the word of this great rescue. As I am in NC and they are in MI, it's hard to help, but I do what I can.
I found GLWR when my 11 year old Weim had passed away and at the time I was looking to foster a Weim. I picked up my first foster dog in June 2015 who was raised in a puppy mill. The great people at this rescue provided so much support to me as I helped this dog that went from being scared of everything to loving life as a normal dog! We ended up keeping this foster dog for our family and we fostered another Weim for the rescue in 2016. The rescue is great in their efforts to rehabilitate the dogs so they can again become part of someone's family. I think the work they do is so important in educating potential adopters about how to care and train their new Weim since this breed is not for everyone. I love working with this group and fostering for them. They are amazing!
Our family loves the weimaramer breed, we have adopted 2 weims from GLWR and they work so hard finding good homes for this breed. They are so deserving of any support that can be given to them. GLWR is honest, hardworking and are wonderful people working for such a great cause. They are part of our family, and we are part of theirs.

Jim - we are disappointed to hear that you feel this way. Interestingly enough you left out critical information such as; receiving full disclosure of Jenka's situation and being told of her basic body condition/weight. We shared with you our health observations along with the Animal Control Facility Vet information and all we knew of her history prior to your adopting her. Throughout our interactions you were treated respectfully and fairly and we made every effort to act in good faith in our attempts to work with you. We even offered you reasonable compensation for medical fees to ensure Jenka's health although we had no legal obligation to do so. Even so, you reneged on the adoption fee (which is still outstanding) breaching the legally binding adoption contract while demanding reimbursement for exorbitant medical fees. As to your comments regarding the property, just prior to your arrival here a storm brought down trees and debris all over the area so of course it was a mess.
