Mission: Grassroots International works to create a just and sustainable world by building alliances with progressive movements. They provide grants to their Global South partners and join them in advocating for social change. Their primary focus is on land, water and food as human rights and nourishing the political struggle necessary to achieve these rights.
Programs: Humanitarian/social justice - support third world and domestic community-based relief programs designed for social and economic projects that are sponsored by democratic social change movements
education - sponsors education programs related to overseas grants program designed to increase awareness and involvement in these programs by north americans
I've been a very satisfied donor to Grassroots International for many years. I've had the chance to visit their program in Haiti. They have a terrific network of Haitian led partners on the ground. These groups do a good job of bridging two different types of action - providing essential services to families in need and advocating for structural change. So in the case of the quake - the groups with which they work are providing aid to families returning to the countryside - and preparing for spring planting - at the same time as they are advocating for a reconstruction plan built on reviving small farmers' livelihoods, not imported food aid. Highly recommended
