Grassroots Gardens WNY is a wonderful organization that does very meaningful and impactful work! They are on the cutting edge of non-profit work. They take a seemingly specific concept (i.e., urban gardens) and expand it to have a wide and intersectional impact. A garden is not just about the garden, but because of its mere existence, becomes about the people, the community, the city, and all of the everyday challenges a garden helps to alleviate. The model is really quite remarkable and unique in so many ways. A small concept having a large impact! How creative!
Review from Guidestar
Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo is transforming the city from the ground up. Community building, oxygenating the city, helping city dwellers experience the miracle of growing a garden, making the inner city beautiful... it's an amazing organization and has my vote.
Grassroots Gardens is a volunteer based not for profit that has been working to make the City of Buffalo a better place I've been a board member of Grassroots Gardens, Inc. since 1996 and truly believe in the positive aspects community gardens bring to our neighborhoods. Grassroots is an organization devoted to helping people create and sustain community gardens on vacant, city-owned lots in Buffalo. Not only do the gardens provide food, but it has been shown that these gardens have helped the city in taking over some of the 14,000 deserted lots in the City of Buffalo. As a Buffalo Police Officer I can attest to the increased feeling of safety in neighborhoods that have a community garden.
Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo continues to promote the greatness of the entire Buffalo City by invigorating the 30 plus neighborhood gardens with thoughtful planning and guidance for all who wish to participate in beautifying Buffalo one garden at a time. Economics seem to be no barrier to the planting and sustaining the gardens throughout the city. Vegetables and flowers abound at planting time because of the tireless staff of Grassroots Gardens to buy and have donated the vast amounts of bulbs and flowers and ornamental plants. Neighborhood children and adults join hands and labor together to beautify their own little bit of Buffalo. This is a group that brings out the best in the neighborhood. For that we are all thankful.
