Mission: Toxic levels of dangerous methylmercury become concentrated in the flesh of large fish that people eat, particularly swordfish, tuna and shark. Even at very low exposures, mercury can damage the sensitive, developing nervous systems of fetuses, infants and young children. But everyone is vulnerable. The Got Mercury Campaign educates the public about mercury in fish through our online mercury calculator at GotMercury.org. Our public campaigns pressure the seafood industry and public agencies to do more to limit public exposure to mercury and protect our health. Got Mercury Campaign is a project of Turtle Island Restoration Network.
Results: Persuaded the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Food Program to drop canned albacore tuna from their food packages because of its high mercury content. Brought a resolution calling for the federal government to take a stronger role in protecting public health with regard to mercury in seafood, which was passed in 2008.
