Mission: The good samaritan shelter, inc. ("gss") is a pennsylvania nonprofit organization created in 1999 to provide safe, comfortable housing for men, women, and women with children experiencing homelessness in the greater phoenixville and ephrata areas of pennyslvania. Gss also collaborates with local health and social service agencies to help its residents regain stability in their lives and address the issues surrounding their homelessness.
Programs: Phoenixville emergency shelter program is an 8-bed shelter for homeless men. Residents are allowed a 45-day residency and offered three meals per day. During code blue and code red weather conditions, the shelter offers emergency vouchers for a local hotel if the emergency shelter is full. Highlights from 2013-2014 fiscal year: provided shelter for 75 men, 25% were employed at any level when they arrived, 75% found employment while in the program, provided over 8,000 meals to emergency shelter residents, average stay in the emergency shelter was 40 days, an increase from previous fiscal years. Additionally, helped the community by fielding over 200 phone calls from individuals looking for assistance. Helped people locate afforable housing options, thereby preventing homelessness in some cases. 100% of residents would recommend good samaritan shelter to a person in need.
phoenixville transitional housing program is comprised of 4 homes. It can accommodate up to 18 men. Residents are allowed a maximum stay of 12 months and are required to have a job or other sources of income. Residents receive case management services and are expected to be responsible for the upkeep of the home, in order to practice life skills needed to live on their own. Many residents of the transitional housing program have moved in from the emergency shelter program. Highlights from the 2013-2014 fiscal year: provided short-term housing to 33 men, 100% of residents would recommend good samaritan shelter to a person in need, 71% of residents leaving the program moved into independent housing, with family, or were promoted to live-in staff position at good samaritan shelter. Residents of phoenixville emergency shelter and traditional housing programs are offered help in budgeting, credit repair, resume writing, job searching and computer training.
ephrata shelter serves homeless women and their children, providing residents with a safe, warm and welcoming home. The program provides the following services: referrals for outside social services, case management with a social worker, counseling and mentoring, budgeting and housing counseling, spiritual guidance and bible study, access to job skills preparation and training and ged completion service. Highlights from the 2013-2014 fiscal year: provided housing for 39 adults and 29 children, 60% of residents found employment while in the program, 82% of residents were able to find permanent housing when leaving our program. Additionally, we helped the community by fielding over 300 phone calls from individuals looking for assistance. We helped people locate affordable housing options, thereby preventing homelessness in some cases. We've also referred people to appropriate counseling services and assisted individuals needing help with resumes and budgeting.
