Mission: The sole mission of good neighbors is to repair homes for at-risk families using donated funds, local volunteers and area contractors and suppliers. Good neighbors repairs the homes of those qualified and in need in southern chester county, pa and has recently expanded into northern new castle county, de.
Programs: In 2017 we repaired 126 homes helping over 320 people which included the elderly, single moms with kids and the disabled. We made homes safer for the elderly by repairing stairs and floors and installing ada bathrooms. We made homes healthier for families by repairing leaking roofs and windows and stopping mold growth. We helped those with disabilities more easily get around by installing ramps, doors, and roll in showers. Most of this work was done by over 400 volunteers who gained a better understanding of the needs of the community and a feeling of contributing in a meaningful way. This included over 50 high school students who spent a week repairing homes during our summer youth camp. This repair activity takes the crushing burden of expensive home repairs off the backs of these families so that they don't have to choose between food and medicine or getting the roof fixed. Homelessness decreases as these homeowners can now stay in their homes. In addition, blight is reduced, property values go up and the neighboring community is enhanced. As a result of the work of good neighbors, these low-income families are now safer, healthier and more hopeful.
What a wonderful organization, I can't say enough about how helpful it has been for my husband and me. Special thanks to Tom Hilferty who has been there for us above and beyond. We are seniors, and not able to do repairs anymore, and we don't have the money to hire anyone, so Tom was a Godsend.
