Here's the thing about Good Karma Bikes... it's not really about bikes at all! Yes, bikes are the medium and the means, but the real purpose of GKB is *people*.
Ultimately, the bike sales, repairs, classes, volunteers and fundraisers are all about investing in the lives and futures of our community members, whether they be young adults needing help getting started on an independent life, or folks who need life-saving transportation and/or job skills, GKB's mission is about "transportation for transformation."
I'm continually amazed at the profound impact that Jim, his staff and volunteers bring. They are literally transforming lives, benefitting those individuals as well as the community at large. Through the tireless work of all the workers, volunteers and supporters, GKB is the magical bike shop that is literally improving the world, one life at a time.
Good Karma Bikes is a phenomenal organization and serves the community at every level. Need a bike? This is the place! Need a repair? Get the best service from a talented team. Good Karma completes the circle.
I have donated time here over the past year and it has always been both challenging and rewarding. The bike ship itself has a great mission in providing bikes at reasonable prices, encouraging cycling in general and teaching how to maintain & repair their bikes. Just superb. Jim, the owner is fun to work with and freely shares has vast knowledge.
Good Karma Bikes helped out the International Rescue Committee in Turlock/Modesto tremendously by giving us a great deal on bicycles and assorted accessories that will go to refugees and other special immigrants living in the Central Valley. Due to COVID-19, it had become increasingly difficult to purchase bicycles in bulk, and we were grateful for Good Karma's ability to produce 25 bikes for our clients within a relatively short timeline. Good Karma Bikes has donated many bikes to our sister office in San Jose as well. We're grateful for their support!
Good Karma bikes have been donating bicycles to African American students in need at San Jose City College. The college has a program dedicated to supporting the academic success and cultural enrichment of its African American students. Many of the students struggle with basic needs and the ongoing partnership with Good Karma Bicycles is a genuine blessing to the program's students in need of transportation. I can't say enough about this organization's generosity and clear dedicated mission to helping our students and others at risk. Thank you Good Karma Bikes!!
Good Karma Bikes is an unsung Hero in our community!
Please spread the word! Jim Gardner is the humble leader of a wonderful team dedicated to changing our world for the better: one person, one bike at a time. If you have a bike that needs a tune-up or repair or you are in the market to buy a bike - get your Karma on and go see Jim!
Not only will you have an incredible service or shopping experience, you will be helping Jim help people in desperate need in our community by engaging with Good Karma Bikes.
Jim's mission and programs help people re-enter the economy: Unsheltered people, people living in poverty, and folks working hard to find economic and social traction following incarceration, overcoming addiction and mental health challenges.
Even if you don't have a bike-related reason, go visit Jim to experience the warmth and community so abundant at Good Karma Bikes.
If you are looking for a local organization where you can volunteer and support with financial donations, this is your Happy Place! Go check it out and create some Good Karma.
The dedicated people of Good Karma Bikes often say "Good Karma Bikes isn't about bikes, we are about people." I have seen this first hand.
The mission at GKB is to repair and improve the world, while being a safe space for diverse groups and individuals to come together to meet the needs of those that society prefers to pretend don't exist -- the un-housed, very low-wage workers, those who are in re-entry from incarceration, and who are recovering from addiction and mental health challenges.
I respect and admire that GKB talks about "360 degrees of good karma" -- this means that in giving one receives, and in receiving one gives. This is what I see and experience every time I visit the GKB shops or one of their events out in the community.
GKB is such a happy, upbeat place. We need that, especially now. The whole community shows up at GKB -- little kids getting their first bike, elders looking for a bike they can feel safe riding, professionals who need a reliable commuter bike, people putting their lives back together after hardship, families who want to ride together, and social service professionals who are sourcing fleets of bikes for groups new to the area and in some cases new to the US. You should know, GKB does a great deal of work with other non-profits serving refugee communities. This inspires me to no end.
There are very few organizations that serve as deeply, as meaningfully, and as selflessly as Good Karma Bikes. This is why I support them. Please consider being part of their mission by: donating a bike, buying a bike, volunteering, making a financial donation. I promise you, you will be grateful you did!
Volunteering here has been very fulfilling in many aspects. Getting to use your hands to help restore the bikes. Knowing that you are helping the environment restoring a bike instead of having it end up in a landfill. Seeing the look on kids and parents faces as they receive the bikes. The appreciation from those living in the streets when you repair their bikes. Providing bikes for sale at greatly reduced prices. Jim created a very positive and supportive environment. Highly suggest you participate in supporting this effort in any way you can.
I had the opportunity to help organize a local bike drive for GKB and interact with Jim and the volunteers. What an amazing organization! I had no idea how much impact a simple bike can have on the community, individual volunteer and those in need. Jim Gardener is one of those people quietly making ripples of change for good in Silicon Valley. I highly recommend getting involved with GKB through bike or financial donations, and volunteering. Good karma will surely come your way.
I first became aware of GKB many years when I volunteered at a soup kitchen and saw Jim Gardner outside fixing bikes for homeless folks. Since then GKB has opened a bike shop where folks from all walks of life come to volunteer their time to continue to help fix bikes for those that cannot afford to fix them elsewhere, as well as make sales to support this much needed service. I WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT GKB FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE! YOU SHOULD TOO!
Good Karma Bikes is the RockStar of bike shops. They've fixed my bikes, they've sold my colleagues bikes, and with every transaction, they help heal the world. GKB understands that having a solid bike is means so much more than transportation. I wouldn't shop anywhere else.
Good Karma Bikes is amazing, providing free repairs for our friends who live outside. Our volunteers had a marvelous time restoring 10 bikes for refugees there recently. We look forward to participating in GKB's mobile bike repair clinics at soup kitchens so guests can get their bikes serviced while dining. Deeply impressed with the way Jim Gardner patiently coaches volunteers to become better bike mechanics. Truly inspiring, transformative, and wonderful!
