Mission: Godspeed Horse Hostel, Inc. is the realized dream of Maria Genovesi, a lifelong enthusiast of horses. Genovesi recently expanded operations at her 33-acre farm in Amenia, New York, to begin rescuing and subsequently adopting out CanAm horses from Canada. CanAm is a relatively new term given to horses bred on PMU farms in Canada. What is PMU? It stands for pregnant mare urine and it's the source for Premarin®, a hormone replacement drug prescribed for menopausal women around the world. There are approximately 450 PMU farms operating in Canada and the United States today. This industry has been around for more than 50 years, and has resulted in the birth each year of nearly 30,000 unwanted foals. These foals are often sent to the slaughterhouse. Godspeed Horse Hostel is working with PMU farmers to find homes for these foals.
