Causes: Environment, Forest Conservation
Mission: Our mission is to restore forest ecosystems – at the scale needed to reverse the climate and biodiversity crisis. We do so by developing large-scale, locally-led, multi-country restoration initiatives across critical ecosystems and catalyze the tools, resources, partnerships and capacities needed for local leaders and communities to succeed in the long term.
Results: By the end of 2022, Global Forest Generation's initiative Acción Andina will have planted over 6 million native trees, in 5 countries, with 13 partner organizations.
Target demographics: restore forest ecosystems.
Direct beneficiaries per year: In the 2021-2022 season, 12 partners in 5 countries have: ● Reforested 1,160 hectares (2,866 acres): Helped build or maintain 67 plant nurseries and planted 2,153,565 native trees; ● Expanded local project capacities: Trained and supported 21 on-the-ground restoration leaders and 126 nursery technicians, project coordinators and assistants (See p. 7-8); ● Provided community benefits: Over 15,000 people participated in Acción Andina restoration activities, with 90 local communities benefiting through new income generation and the provision of services addressing drivers of deforestation and sustainable natural resource use.
Geographic areas served: Our first initiative, Acción Andina, is on a mission to protect and restore one million hectares of high Andean, native forest ecosystems in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.
Programs: We focus on leadership development and capacity-building on the ground to produce long-term, high-quality conservation outcomes. We aim to unlock multi-year sustainable finance for grassroots projects that gives them the resources they need to plan and carry out successful, long-term ecosystem restoration initiatives. We help shape the global conversation around ecosystem restoration, communicating to global audiences local realities and challenges of on-the-ground project implementation in order to catalyze support for community-based, grassroots native forest conservation and ecosystem restoration. We build partnerships among local, grassroots organizations and with international organizations and bodies to establish ecosystem restoration best practices and improve individual project quality, transparency, and long-term impact.
