Mission: Global Footprint Network’s vision is for all people to live well, within the means of nature. Our mission is to change how the world measures and manages its natural resources.
Results: Global Footprint Network is changing how the world manages its natural resources. Every year people demand more from nature than it can regenerate, leading to disruptive resource constraints and climate change. To create a better future, leaders in government and finance come to us for guidance about how to manage the resources they have, reduce economic risk, and improve well-being. We help them take action by translating data into insights that drive practical decisions. This starts with metrics that track how resources are used and measure what’s available. Then we empower clients to frame opportunities and make confident policy and investment decisions backed by facts. The heart of our work is the Ecological Footprint. The Footprint measures human demand on nature, expressed as a single, easy-to-understand number that’s scalable from a global to individual level. We pioneered this acclaimed methodology more than 20 years ago and continue to build on the science and design new tools for applying it. Our programs impact leaders and communities around the world: • Nations: We provide insights into the total resources countries have and how they’re being used, to inform policies that improve national sustainability and well-being. • Local governments: Our tools inform policies to improve local sustainability and guide decisions that reduce risk to communities while optimizing public project investments. • Finance: Our environmental risk analysis provides data to support investment decisions, credit ratings, and country risk assessments. • Citizens: We inspire and mobilize individuals through our education and advocacy campaigns, including our annual Overshoot Day, and personal Footprint calculators. • Join us in creating a future where people, planet, and economies thrive.
Target demographics: A future where people, planet, and economies thrive.
Direct beneficiaries per year: In 2015, more than two million people calculated their individual Ecological Footprint. We provided metrics to international organizations and cities and local governments. We also helped financial institutions quantify and integrate resource scarcity and climate change into their investments, credit ratings, and country risk analysis.

Programs: Updated every year, our National Footprint Accounts are now available for anyone to download on our Ecological Footprint Explorer open data platform at data.footprintnetworkorg. We also provide technical support and some additional data for license under specific circumstances. Our online Ecological Footprint calculator is used by more than two million people a year and is especially popular with students and educators. Use it to calculate how many planets it takes to support your lifestyle. We are excited about the next phase of this calculator, as we make it mobile and completely reimagine it. We invite your contributions to make this happen! Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. Join our global sustainability awareness campaign and help #movethedate. Can you guess when Earth Overshoot Day 2017 falls? City and Regional Work The global effort for sustainability will be won, or lost, in the world’s cities, where 70 to 80 percent of the world’s population is expected to live by 2050. We provide Footprint assessments at the local and regional level to help meet sustainability goals.
