Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Economic Development, International, International Development, International Economic Development, International Relief, Microfinance

Mission: Our mission is to create long-lasting, positive and community-led change that improves the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable people across the globe. Our central goal is to build the capacity of communities to direct the development of their own lives and livelihoods. Empowered communities are able to drive change when they recognize everyone’s needs, understand their rights and the natural and market forces that affect them, and are able to take collective action. Once empowered, communities are better able to build constructive relationships with government institutions, the private sector and civil society in ways that are sustainable. In turn, local government, the private sector and civil society have a greater ability to address community needs.

My husband & I have donated to CHF in the past and will continue to do so in the future. They should be praised for the work they do everyday-it is companies like CHF that really make a difference. I received my tax deduction letter a month after I donated and was notified exactly what my donation went towards. Keep up the good work!

I've given to CHF six times or so over the last 3 years. They don't flood me with endless solicitations and "gifts" like stickers or pens. They provide quality information on what they do, the results they achieve and their newsletters are informative rather than begging letters. I've followed their work in Haiti and most recently in the Horn of Africa and have always been impressed by how much they with how little fanfare.

The reason I am leaving this review is becuase I think that readers of this site might be fooled by the high ranking of CHF. The fact of the matter is this organization does a very bad job with constituent relations. I did not recieve a tax letter for a sizeable donation even after I contacted the organization multiple times. Upon further investigation and understanding this organization it seems that their CEO, a former lobbyist, makes close to a 500K salary when they cant even report to their donors what they are doing with donated money. I will never donate to this charity again and urge others not to. If you need some independent verification of this check out the July 2011 Rolling Stone story about them on Haiti. Donor beware.
