Causes: Children & Youth, Youth Development Programs
Mission: The mission of Girls on the Run (GOTR) is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. As a national physical activity-based positive youth development program (PA-PYD), GOTR is one of a kind. As our name implies, running is an integral part of the program, but our primary focus is young women’s empowerment. Through our experience-based curriculum, girls in Rhode Island learn to activate their limitless potential through participation in lessons that help them develop their competence, feel confident in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with compassion, create positive connections with peers, coaches and adults and make a meaningful contribution to their communities.
Results: Established in 2011, Girls on the Run Rhode Island (GOTRRI) is an Independent Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of 200+ locations across the United States and has served over one million girls throughout its twenty year history. GOTRRI began offering programming in the spring of 2012 to 34 girls in Providence and in just seven years, the program has grown to serving nearly 7600 girls at over 540 program sites annually. Girls hail from diverse socio-economic backgrounds in all five Rhode Island counties and, as of spring 2017, Bristol County, Massachusetts as well. In fact, this spring will be our biggest season to date, with 31 sites hosting the program and 400 girls anticipated to participate.
