Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Girls Clubs, Recreation & Sports, Sports, Youth Development

Mission: Girls On The Run of the Triangle is an active character development program for girls that combines running and physical activity with important life lessons that focus on physical, emotional, mental and social health while building self-esteem and leadership skills.

Results: Results showed that the new measures were reliable with our group of girls and that they could be administered in much less time than our past measures. We conducted the analyses with the sample of girls who scored below the national mean on each construct. Girls who started with lower scores on each construct showed statistically significant and meaningful improvements on the 5Cs + 1 and physical activity and sedentary behaviors. For the total sample, percentage improvement across constructs was 31-50.5%, whereas 55.4-74.1% of girls improved who began with lower pre-season scores. Findings provide evidence that the new measures are appropriate for evaluation going forward with girls ages 7-13 years and that Girls on the Run is having a positive impact on youth development, particularly for girls who need the program the most.

Target demographics: girls ages 8-13

Direct beneficiaries per year: 1,550 girls on over 100 teams located in schools and partner organizations all across the Triangle region.

Geographic areas served: Wake, Durham, and Orange Counties in North Carolina

Programs: characther development and physical activity to activate their limitless potential and become joyful, healthy, and confident.

I have been coaching a Girls on the Run team in the Triangle for five seasons. Even though I have been reassigned to teach at a different school in my district, I felt so strongly about the program, that I offered to coach again this year. The response from my team has been tremendous. We've doubled the size of our team, and the girls benefit so much! I've gotten a great deal of positive feedback from parents and the girls themselves about how the program has benefitted them. They feel more confident, feel part of a team, are empowered, and have such a sense of accomplishment between the running and the completion of our community service project. Coaching is one of my favorite roles and I can't begin to describe how much the experience has impacted me.

This organization is committed to its mission of helping girls discover their limitless potential. The program is rich and often life-changing for girls. Both of my daughters participated in Girls of the Run and loved it. I've said many times that I wish the program had been around when I was young.

Girls on the Run is a great organization helping young girls love to run and build their self-esteem! I wish I had been able to participate in Girls on the Run as a child!

This organization not only serves an important function -- inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident -- but it is an extremely well-run organization. The staff, the volunteers and the board members are wholly committed to the mission and to ensuring that each girl has a life-changing positive experience, from the coaching sessions to the 5K. I am proud to serve such an amazing organization, and only wish they had GOTR when I was in grade school!

My daughter is in her second season of the program and loves it. She has improved self-esteem and personal fitness.
The season ending 5K helps not only 3rd-8th grade girls exceed their personal goals, but folks from around the community are inspired to get out and finish a 5K.
Girls on the Run is one of the most recognized and inspiring non-profits in North Carolina. Parents, participants, and coaches are the heart of the organization!!! #CarrieOn #BeInspired

GOTR is an amazing nonprofit that benefits girls in 3rd-5th grades. It empowers the girls and gives them the tools to deal with a range of issues that will benefit them their whole lives. I have had a niece in the program and my little girl can't wait to become old enough--I would recommend this to anyone.

I wish GOTR had been in existence when I was a child! The program, while geared around running, is about so much more--building confidence, dealing with media images, understanding complicated life events from a kid's perspective, learning how to feel things honestly. And the sense of accomplishment at the end of a program--after the participant runs and completes a 5k at age 8, 9 or 10--is something that will remain with the child for the rest of her life. In 12 weeks, so much can happen for a young person: this program can help make these important years positive. Further, for volunteers and coaches, GOTR offers a great outlet for giving back to our communities in really fun ways!

I have followed GOTR for years and been involved in Quintiles sponsorship from its beginning. I love the concept and the mix of physical activity and empowerment and when the opportunity to contribute as a board member came along, I jumped! Since getting an inside seat, my admiration have grown even more! The sincerity and intention of the staff, coaches and volunteers is unmatched. The collective impact on our communities will be felt for generations. My daughter will be in 3rd grade next year and can hardly wait to sign up.

Girls On The Run is, quite possibly, the most underrated small non-profit in the Triangle. Their life skills and running programs offer powerful lessons to 3rd through 8th grade girls. My only wish is that their programs could be available to each and every girl in the triangle region.

What an amazing organization! My daughter has run three GOTR 5K's and has grown so much in confidence, even though she's not even old enough to participate in the program itself yet. There is nothing like being surrounded by a diverse sea of slightly older girls showing their strength, confidence and community! I am serving my second year on the board of this organization and can attest to their commitment to serving as many girls as possible and helping thousands of girls in our area reach their potential. I feel so lucky to be part of this organization.

GOTR is so much more than a running program, and its positive impact extends to coaches, volunteers, parents and the community. As a GOTR of the Triangle coach, I had the opportunity to see first-hand how accomplishment and camaraderie impacts the confidence and spirit of girls and truly does empower them to be themselves. The positivity is contagious. The insecurities and anxieties that can start to set in for girls at this age can be powerful. Addressing everything from bullying to unrealistic media images to the importance of service and community, GOTR reaches girls at a critical time in development and gives them the confidence and tools to live a happy and healthy lifestyle, both physically and emotionally.

As a mom of a former Girl on the Run, I know first hand the important impact this program has on our girls. My daughter didn't complete the program with a passion for running; however, she learned about her competitive nature, that big projects are best tackled in small pieces, and that it's actually OK to be friends with girls in a lower grade. I don't know why parents and loved ones wouldn't do everything possible to get their daughter in the program and give her the tools and confidence to unleash the limitless potential within her. Especially since they give scholarship assistance to make sure that all girls have access to this life-changing program!

Although I do not have a daughter, I have found that the leadership of the Girls on the Run Triangle has been intentional about it's goal in building the confidence, character, and the strength of girls and young women. With the significant growth of the program, the outreach to many many schools and girls has been incredible. As well, this particular chapter has been committed to fundraising for scholarships for students who might not otherwise afford this growth program. Finally, the leadership continues to think beyond the box in its new middle school program and Carrieon scholarship. I do feel that the organization takes its responsibility of stewardship seriously.

I have been involved with Girls on the Run as a participant, volunteer, intern and, in 1 week, a coach. My experience with GOTR has been transformative - whenever I come into work or to volunteer I am filled with the GOTR positive spirit! It is a pleasure to volunteer and work for such an uplifting and transformative organization and to know that your actions are having a lasting, positive impact on young girls in the Triangle. GOTR is a wonderful organization to get involved with, whether that is through participating in the programs, volunteering or coaching!

My daughter was a Girl on the Run for two seasons, and I have coached in the past and I'm also a site coordinator for the program. I love the positivity of the program for the girls and the lessons it teaches them that will help them in school and in life! I love how inclusive the program is to socio economically disadvantaged students and how empowering it is to all the girls who participate in the program.

What an AMAZING, life-changing organization. I've supported GOTR of the Triangle for many years because GOTR truly inspires young-women-in-training. Everyone involved believes that every girl can embrace who she is,
can define who she wants to be, can rise to any challenge...and can change the world. Through this organization, all girls can!

My daughters participated and I coached. An absolutely wonderful experience for all of us. One of my girls does not even enjoy running but wants to sign up again. The values we embrace at home are reinforced through the program including strategies and scripts for handling difficult conversations and situations. Highly recommend!

My ten year old is getting ready to start her THIRD season with Girls on the Run. She participated once as a third grader, once as a fourth grader, and now she is participating as a fifth grader. She was insistent that we sign up again this fall, no matter how busy she was with other extra-curricular activities. She enjoys the build up to running a 5K, but better yet, she has really soaked up the valuable lessons taught through the program. The other day, she reminded me that it is not what you look like on the outside, but what you are on the inside that counts. I asked her where she learned that, and she responded, "Girls on the Run, of course." I am constantly amazed at the maturity she shows when faced with the usual social rigors of late elementary school, and I feel quite confident that the lessons learned at Girls on the Run influence and really drive her thoughts and decisions. Girls on the Run has been a blessing for her, and I highly recommend it to any young girl, no matter how seemingly confident she is. The program really reinforces the positive thoughts and behaviors that we want for our young girls so that they can grow into confident and happy young ladies!

When you volunteer for a nonprofit, often you don't see the fruits of your labor. As a Girls on the Run coach, you see your team get stronger and more confident over 12 weeks. In addition to being a role model and shaping the next generation, watching your girls cross the finish line at the end of season 5k is one of the most rewarding volunteer experiences you could hope for.

I first came to volunteer at GOTR of the Triangle because of their mission, and I've stayed volunteering for almost 9 years because of the amazing women role models I've encountered along the way, and the incredible positive attitudes and spirit that the staff and volunteers exude. It's just a perfect organization to know that your efforts are making a difference. Anytime I meet a girl that's participated in the program, I've been amazed at their smiles, enthusiasm and confidence. I have no hesitations investing my time, energy and dollars into GOTR of the Triangle!

Girls on the Run is wonderful organization in so many ways. As a board member I've been able to see the workings on the inside and the true passion that drives it's leaders. I've also been a site contact and a mom of a participant. My kids have been involved in many activities and I've never experienced one that cares about my daughter as a person and her growth as an individual as much as GOTR. Not to mention, the organization is extremely responsive, organized, and prepared (huge points for a busy mom)!

GOTR is, hands down, one of the best things you can do for your daughter. The lessons taught and the friends made through this program stay with the participants for the rest of their lives. The staff is, without a doubt, one of the most knowledgeable and compassionate group of people you could ever hope to know, and succeed every year in changing young girls lives. This program helps the girls who are struggling to find friends, the girls who are surrounded by bullying, and the girls who just want to run! GOTR truly has it all, and is SO MUCH FUN!

Can you imagine a program for young girls that would guarantee each involved would leave more joyful, confident, and empowered? Girls On The Run of the Triangle is that program and more. When I first learned about this program I was immediately drawn to it because I know how it would have positively impacted me at that age in more ways than one. I would have been more prepared with skills and tools to face and get through many common yet tough situations all girls go through during those years. I would have learned at a younger age the power of my choices from choosing my attitude to choosing my friends. I would have gained a confidence and self worth from the experiences this program offers that would have changed the way I entered into my years down the road. I can't help but wonder how much stronger mentally and physically I would have been at a much younger age. I know at Girls On The Run each girl that finishes the program leaves feeling proud and confident for setting goals and seeing them through by finishing an energizing and fun filled 5k. Through the amazing fun and interactive activity based curriculum each girl leaves inspired to choose a healthy, joyful, more positive self.
I choose to volunteer and donate to this program in the hopes I can help expand the reach to as many young girls as possible. It is truly life changing for all involved!

Girls On The Run encompasses everything I could hope for in volunteering with a non-profit organization. Not only does GOTR help build confidence, leadership, and self-esteem in young girls, but they also focus highly on teamwork and teaching the girls how to truly build mutually beneficial relationships with each other. I have been volunteering with GOTR of The Triangle for 6 months now and I have been hooked since day one. Seeing the positivity and light in the girls' eyes who participate in the program gives me solace in knowing that the more time I put into helping this organization grow, the more little girls' lives will be touched in such a powerfully positive way. Learning how to truly love thy neighbor is not a lesson learned easily in school and Girls On The Run makes that message possible.

Girls on the Run of the Triangle has been life changing for girls ages 8-12 all over the Triangle. At this very vulnerable age, girls tend to follow the crowd, make decisions based on influence and develop their foundational character. GOTR has a unique curriculum that geared to reaching and guiding these girls who don't believe in themselves, aren't sure how or where they fit in, and are afraid to DREAM BIG. GOTR teaches through valuable life lessons and physical exercise just how amazing they can truly be!

GOTR of the Triangle Is a model social purpose organization. The ways they have scaled their impact are exemplary, and other nonprofits can learn much from studying their methods. They have accomplished much with great leadership, unbelievable volunteer support (including the coaches), a terrific curriculum, fantastic partnerships, and clever fund-raising. It's amazing what they have achieved in a relatively short time period!

When I first heard about GOTR I knew I wanted to be a coach but the times didn't fit with my schedule. However, there are SO many ways to volunteer that I quickly found other opportunities to help by serving on the marketing & community outreach committee as well as helping at the spring 5k. GOTR exudes such positive energy and fun, which is why I love being a part of this organization. To be a small part of this force for good is an opportunity not to be missed!

I was a huge fan of Girls on the Run of the Triangle long before I joined the board in 2007. My respect for the organization has only grown over time, as I've seen firsthand its impact on the lives of young girls and their families throughout the region. If GOTR had been around when I was nine, I might have been better equipped to deal with my own challenges, like boys, body image and bullying. But I’ve discovered that it’s never too late to learn. As a board member, I'm able to do that every day.

I absolutely love Girls on the Run of the Triangle! I have volunteered as a coach for several seasons, and I always love my team. The GOTR office makes volunteering foolproof, and they also make volunteers feel valued for their time and work. Girls on the Run is MUCH more than a running program--I've enjoyed watching our team become more joyful, healthy, and confident. I highly recommend the program to families and potential volunteers. The GOTR team is fantastic, and the end-of-season 5ks are a blast. I would give this nonprofit 10 stars if I could!
