Causes: Children & Youth, Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
Mission:
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
Results: Millions of girls have benefited from Girl Scouting since it was founded in 1912.
Target demographics: Girls ages 5-17
Direct beneficiaries per year: 20,000 - plus girl members in a four-county region in Southwestern Pennsylvania
Geographic areas served: Allegheny, Greene, Fayette, and Washington counties, and portions of Somerset and Westmoreland counties.
Programs: The Financial Assistance program allows all girls to participate in Girl Scouting, regardless of any economic hardships their families may have. Assistance may be granted to provide a portion of a girl’s membership event or camp fee. This assistance will allow all girls to take part in all that Girl Scouting has to offer. We provide a curriculum that allows girls to enhance their knowledge and interest in math, science, the environment, and sports and fitness, as well as community service. A unique aspect of Girl Scouts is that girls play an active role in determining the focus of their activities.
Girls can learn a wide range of skills, including: business and mathematics, environmental and forensic science, literacy, negotiation, camping-life skills, self-esteem and empowerment, bullying prevention/intervention, crime prevention and more.
Furthermore, all programming allows girls to build courage, confidence and character by helping them to strengthen their leadership skills as well as team-building skills, learning new things and meeting new people.
