Programs: Girl scouts spirit of nebraska builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girl scouts was founded in 1912 by juliette gordon low. At the time, there was no path to leadership for women; juliette believed passionately that girls should be given the same opportunities as boys to develop physically, mentally, and spiritually. She knew an all-girl organization could change the world. There are now more than 59 million women throughout the united states who have benefitted from the girl scout leadership experience (glse). In girl scouts, girls engage in activities that help them discover themselves and their values, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place. Established in 1926, girl scouts spirit of nebraska is one of 112 councils in the united states. Girl scouts is the largest girl-serving organization in nebraska with more than 21,000 girl and adult members. The council operates six service centers, six camps, and one outdoor education facility, giving girls easy access to the natural world and many opportunities to participate in girl scout programs. Girl scouts provides age-appropriate, progressive experiences with four program focus areas: stem (science, technology, engineering, and math), entrepreneurship, life skills, and outdoor experiences. All girl scout experiences incorporate three key indicators of leadership as defined by the gsle: * discover: girls understand themselves and their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world. * connect: girls care about, inspire, and team with others locally and globally. * take action: girls act to make the world a better place. Through participation in girl scouts, girls stand up for themselves and believe they can do anything, even when outside their comfort zone. They are honest, reliable, and engaged citizens who work well with others. Studies show girl scout attributes rival academic and technical skills in predicting positive life outcomes. Girl scouts are happier, healthier, and less likely to engage in problem behaviors. Research shows they are more likely to earn "excellent" grades and to graduate college. Investing in girls produces the greatest return in economic development, social progress, and public health - improving not only individual lives, but the fabric of society overall. At girl scouts, we believe that one girl can make a difference and that together, girls can change the world.
