Mission: Gaining Ground's mission is to provide free, sustainably grown, fresh organic produce to people experiencing food insecurity. We do this with the helping hands of a diverse community of volunteers who work and learn with us on our farm.
Results: Over 1,500 families experiencing food insecurity benefit from our fresh, high quality produce each week during the growing season. We distribute over 120,000 pounds of food each year.
Target demographics: Individuals and families experiencing food insecurity
Direct beneficiaries per year: 1,500 individuals experiencing food insecurity
Geographic areas served: Boston, Lowell, and the Metrowest area of Massachusetts
Programs: We grow and distribute fresh, organic produce to local and greater Boston area individuals and families in need of food assistance. In 2020, an estimated 1,500 individuals and/or families were served over 127,000 pounds of produce, and over 30 gallons of maple syrup. Distribution to 15 different partner organizations, who then distribute our high quality, fresh, organic vegetables, fruit, herbs, flowers, honey and maple syrup to individuals experiencing food insecurity, takes place weekly. Our volunteer season begins in April and continues into November. Distribution locally is conducted on a weekly basis. The produce grown and distributed consists of over 70 varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers. In order to accomplish the above, Gaining Ground, inc. utilizes over 2,500 volunteers who help grow the food for hunger relief.
