Earlier this year, a cottontail rabbit mom set up her nest in our yard. Sadly, there was heavy rain and freezing weather, and only one little kit survived. We took the bunny in but without its mother, there was not much hope to save the little critter. Our daughter was heartbroken. We did some research, and learned about the Gainesville Rabbit rescue. They answered our MANY questions and helped us set up a great indoor environment before we brought home Milkshake, a 9 pound ruby eyed white rabbit. Milkshake had been rescued after being found lost and alone in Gainesville.
Before long, we realized that bunnies often do better in bonded pairs. We headed back to Gainesville Rabbit rescue with our girl, and did some 'bunny speed dates'. She came back home with her new hus-bun, Spunky, who was born at the rescue after his mom was saved in the Georgia marshes. The two are so happy together and often snuggle up closely together, inseparable!
A couple of months later, a friend called. She had a lop-eared bunny, Ollie, and she was not able to give him the time or space to play that he needed. She asked if we could take him in. Well, how could we say no? We adore him and he has settled right in with the rest of the family.
Now our home is filled with rescue animals. Besides our 3 rescue rabbits, we also have 4 cats and 1 dog. We may not have a lot of money to donate to charity, but we certainly opened up our hearts and our home. Not only did we help Gainesville Rabbit rescue continue their good work, but we also saved pets' lives and enriched our own by adopting them.
Review from #MyGivingStory
I have been volunteering for GRR for 2 years. I love working with the rabbits and have developed friendships with the operators. I have adopted a rabbit from them and currently foster. It is rewarding and fun!
