Mission: The purpose of the Gadsby''s Tavern Museum Society (GTMS) shall be to provide ongoing support in the preservation, development, and interpretation of Gadsby''s Tavern Museum and its programs. The objectives of GTMS are the following: 1. To generate donations of cash and in-kind support for the historical and educational aspects of Gadsby''s Tavern Museum.2. To encourage community, state, and national support of Gadsby''s Tavern Museum as a historical, cultural, and educational asset and to support the study of the Tavern''s role in the development of Early American history, life, and culture.3. To encourage volunteer activities and assist in ongoing projects of Gadsby''s Tavern Museum. 4. To support Gadsby''s Tavern Museum as an educational institution and to support the Museum as a research facility for the study of Early American history, life, and culture.5. To encourage participation in national, state, and educational programs pertaining to Gadsby''s Tavern Museum.
Programs: GTMS has committed to assist in fund raising for the restoration of Gadsby's Tavern Museum's 18th century Ice Well. The ice well is below ground under Cameron Street in Old Town Alexandria. The ice well is an excellent example of 18th century ice wells, but has significant ventilation and structural issues. Total fundraising goals for the project are $679,700. To date $193,700 has been raised and paid for design of the project and approval before the Board of Architectural Review and construction documents. Remaining funds needed will cover actual construction costs and signage and interpretation.
