Mission: G.I.A.: Gift It Away, Inc. is an innovative initiative that provides and freely delivers new/gently used furniture/appliances to elderly, low-income, and criminal justice-impacted families/individuals to satisfy local community needs in Astoria and Long Island City, New York Areas.
G.I.A.: Gift It Away, Inc. is a type of aid that is often not provided on a large enough scale. There are several aid programs; unfortunately, few meet and sustain our purpose of providing free delivery and new/gently used furniture to elderly, low-income, and criminal justice-impacted families and individuals. G.I.A. focuses on communities of concern because they require extra assistance in maintaining and creating a safe atmosphere in their homes.
The objective of G.I.A.: Gift It Away, Inc. is to help seniors, low-income, and criminal justice impacted families/individuals by providing the basic home furnishing necessities and delivery services. Affordable housing décor has had a disproportionate impact on vulnerable groups that have seen rising unemployment and illness levels. The home furnishings are necessary to create a safe and stable environment for an individual's total well-being, including healthy and productive situations.
Disadvantaged communities need to question and alter detrimental institutions and barriers in their communities. Addressing the need transitioning into housing by providing furniture/appliances to disadvantaged groups to maintain long-term stability is essential to productivity. Despite the persistent challenges that disadvantaged communities face, we will continue to struggle to close the gap and achieve equality.
hat is furniture poverty?
Any individual or family that lacks the financial wherewithal to convert their vacant home into a furnished home is said to be living in furniture poverty. A lack of a bed implies a terrible night's sleep, limiting your capacity to live, work, and study. Without a sofa to sit on, you may be hesitant to allow friends or support workers into your house. Empty housing can lead to individuals returning to a shelter, where they can at least sleep on a bed. Furniture poverty has negative physical, emotional, and financial effects.
Furniture poverty is a continuum that many families and people experience in our communities of concern.
Our solution is to defeat furniture poverty and inequalities among the communities of concern and reduce furniture waste disposal issues by collecting, delivering, and donating the unwanted gently used/new furniture/appliances.
Results: What happens because we exist is that we assist families in maintaining stability by giving support and creating safe conditions in their homes. Keeping families or individuals from spiraling deeper into sadness or difficulties.
In the short period of our organization opening, we have impacted several families/individuals and affected the community by our dedication and services. We try to maintain delivering and donating furniture/appliances to at least 3 to 4 families/individuals on a daily basis. The maximum we have furnished have been 5 apartments in one day.
We have witnessed many elderlies, low-income, and criminal justice impacted individuals/families extremely grateful for their new/gently used furniture/appliances and delivery services that G.I.A.: Gift It Away, Inc. has provided. For example, a formerly incarcerated senior expressed his gratitude and stated that he had been waiting for a specific agency to provide him a voucher for furniture for over 6 months, and thanks to G.I.A.: Gift It Away, Inc. he was able to furnish his home.
During the last few months, many people have discarded or thrown away gently used furniture/appliances because they no longer want the items or have purchased new ones. Instead of allowing it to go to waste, G.I.A.: Gift It Away, Inc. receives and collects the gently used furniture/appliances and finds a new home.
Direct beneficiaries per year: In the past 3 months, we helped furnish 30 homes.
