Mission: The mission of future of privacy forum is to advance responsible data practices.
Programs: Location and advertising technology: providing expert guidance on online tracking technologies has long been at the core of fpf's mission. Our current location and advertising technology work continues to explore cutting-edge tracking technologies. Fpf joined with senator schumer to launch a first-ever code of conduct and opt-out mechanism for mobile location analytics. Fpf has provided detailed guidance and best practices around the deployment and use of bluetooth beacons, and has consulted with leading government regulators about the privacy issues presented by cross-device tracking technologies. Fpf is also developing detailed documentation to help companies engage in ad-tech due diligence and intends to expand this effort to assist companies with third-party vendor assessment in the mobile marketing space.
de-identification: fpf has proposed that different levels of de-identification should apply depending on whether the data is made public or not, and that administrative controls should be credited as part of a responsible approach to de-identification efforts. We are continuing to develop models that improve transparency and terminology around de-identification, and that advance practical de-identification and support the utility of data.
big data: building on ideas promoted by fpf in our big data and privacy: making ends meet symposium and the white house big data review, fpf has pursued a combination of practical strategies and high-level thought leadership to address new opportunities and privacy risks presented by novel uses of personal information. In addition to formal comments and consultations with senior administration officials, fpf introduced a new framework for conducting benefit-risk analysis for big data projects and released a series of papers and articles exploring practices and principles for uses of sensitive data and models for ethical analysis of innovative data research. Fpf will be holding an nsf-supported academic workshop exploring lessons learned from institutional review boards for confronting ethical questions posed by big data.
