Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: The mission of Furry Friends Foster and Rescue Inc. is to save urgent dogs in high kill shelters, primarily in the State of Connecticut, and other pets in bad situations needing a new home. Further, our mission is to attend to the medical and behavioral needs of these animals and place them in wonderful, loving forever homes. In addition, we strive to educate the public about proper care of their pets, including encouraging spaying and neutering of all pets, providing information regarding low cost spay neuter options, and about programs that can help pet owners with limited resources to keep their pets in their home.

As a volunteer I was assigned to screen applications and perform home visits.i met so many qualified families who were excited to own a dog.
I also saw the inner workings of the rescue. There were bills that weren’t being paid, animals who were not getting basic needs met etc. and that became the focus rather than getting the dogs adopted.
I heard over and over again from the families I met that they never heard back from anyone once their applications were approved. I felt like I had wasted my time as well as theirs and that their hopes had been dashed because the rescue was mired in financial problems and the dogs were no longer the focus.
This was several years ago. The rescue is still begging for money but they are not taking new dogs nor are they adopting out the ones they already have…… and the bills they piled up are still not being paid. Makes me wonder where the money is going. I would not give this organization one red cent because there is no transparency and no dogs are being adopted into loving homes.

Terrible!!!!!. President does not follow up with people who apply to adopt dogs and if you ask you are treated rudely or completely ignored. There seem to be dogs coming in all the time and few adoptions - no wonder! I have moved on and plan to adopt elsewhere

I fostered for Furry Friends and was very grateful for the time, effort and expense they put into caring -- and finding homes -- for dogs that are older or require medical attention or are in need of extra special attention because they came from less-than-desirable circumstances. FFFR strives to assist dogs that are truly in need and rescue (and house) dogs that are coming from bad environments.

this is a caring and compassionate rescue organization that takes in animals of all size, age, and breed. An alliance with Orange Veterinary Hospital ensures that all rescues are looked after and given the finest medical care available. Volunteer fosters are able to pitch in and assist FFFR via an extremely well-organized facebook system.

Sadly this organization went downhill fast several years ago. What was once a proud rescue that helped many dogs became a disaster once it became involved with an unscrupulous trainer that bled the rescue dry of funds. The president took desperate measures and stopped paying veterinary bills and other vendors and meanwhile the animals suffered for it. The doors should have been shut about 3-4 years ago and the remaining animals should have been placed elsewhere. Now they seem to have been forgotten and all efforts to find them homes have fallen by the wayside. The president needs to step aside and finally do what is best for the animals. As a former volunteer, donor and board member I say all of this with no malice but I do feel heartbroken for the animals that this organization was supposed to protect.

Was referred to FFF from a Kennel in Canton Roaring Brook said a dog I was interested in adopting was transferred to them. Called asked about the dog said it wasn't there just did a curtesy post for the animal.
Called Roaring Brook back said they were told not to give me any info. from FFF. Old lady at this rescue seems deviant . Do your due diligence with these rescues and borders because nobody seems to regulate them.

Stay away from FFFR. As a former foster I can tell you the president is completely out of touch with what is happening with some of the dogs. Her focus is questionable, she has many adoptable dogs that are deteriorating in boarding, she has amassed tremendous vet bills that she has no way or intention of paying. My last foster boy was at least 16, severely arthritic, and she REFUSED to consider euthanizing him for months, there IS NO EXCUSE for her abominable behavior. I cannot believe she has not done the right thing and stopped down before the rescue entirely implodes. And it sadly will.

The compassion they have for the less than perfect puppies is unmatched. I admire their determination to give all animals a fair fight for life. They were very helpful with training in the early days of adoption. My dog and I have both benefited from the experience.

Things seemed great for several years with this rescue. But how is it now that they owe almost ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS to veterinarians, kennels and trainers? And why have they shifted to having their dogs live in (mostly outdoor) kennels now? What happened that caused this rescue to stop paying their bills, stop caring for their dogs, and having so much drama on the Board of Directors? The poor dogs are paying the price for this mismanagement!

We loved working with Furry Friends. It was clear from the start that the dog wasn’t just a dog but a member of the Furry Friends family. It’s not about placing a dog with any person, it’s placing them with the right person.

Auggie has fit right into our family, from the first day we met him we knew he was one of us.

We will forever be grateful for having our dog placed with us. He’s the best and I don’t know if we could love him anymore than we do. If we could, we would adopt five more dogs from this organization.

This rescue is not what it used to be. Dogs are no longer the priority. Way too many dogs in boarding situations. Some for more than a year. Living in a cage isn’t my idea of rescue.

This “rescue” has really lost sight of what it means to be a responsible animal rescue. The mission states it helps primarily Connecticut dogs but recently it has begun to import numerous dogs from out of state and seems to have forgotten about the CT dogs already in the rescue, many of which are languishing in boarding for months and even years. The organization constantly begs for money - of course boarding costs for at minimum 15-20 dogs is expensive! There needs to be a change on leadership beginning with the president and the rescue needs to scale back and focus on getting dogs adopted.

I joined this group as a foster in February, after reference checks and a home visit to verify my suitability, I received my first foster. Leslie has been supportive and extremely responsive to my question, which I so appreciate. It is the attention to detail and the responsiveness that makes this organization the best. Most of all everything is done for the dogs. Whatever care they need is taken care of.

Really stand behind their dogs. Take some of the harder cases or dogs too long in animal control for whatever reason then work on training, medical care and find best options,to keep the dogs safe while awaiting adoptive homes. Dedicated, hardworking crew.

I am a former volunteer for this organization. At one time I was proud to be a part of it......well not any more. I would give it zero stars if i could. At one time I was proud of the work I did as a volunteer and felt like I was making a difference and giving dogs a better life. I donated my time and money freely and generously. Recently, however it has come to my attention that this "rescue" may not be what it claims to be. Dogs living in boarding kennels while still more dogs are being imported from other states. The rescue constantly posts how it is closed for intakes and begs for donations on social media every day. Meanwhile in the next breath they "introduce" the new dogs coming in and beg for money for them too. It is rare to see any dogs getting adopted these days. I would LOVE to know where the donations are going. Applications are not getting processed and dogs are deteriorating in boarding. Board members, volunteers and fosters are leaving at an alarming rate. Until there is change, starting with the president, I would not donate to or associate myself with this group in any way.

My experience with this rescue as a volunteer and board member for over five years was very positive until, as a board member, I started to peek under the hood. Many board members have been forced out, and they brought concerns to my attention. When I started investigating concerns, I was then pushed out. Concerns include, but are not limited to: numerous violations of the organizations own bylaws, policies and procedures, as well as standard practices for non-profits. In addition, the rescue owes approximately $80,000 to vets and trainers (none of this is disclosed to the Board), allows dogs to languish in boarding for years (where they deteriorate) , allows dogs to suffer for days despite vet recommendations that they be euthanized, continues to use a trainer that the entire board wished to end relations with, abandons and abuses fosters and volunteers, and on and on. The entire rescue is run by one person, who serves as both Board President and Executive Director, with no oversight whatsoever. As soon as a Board member starts asking questions, she calls a vote to remove them, gaslighting remaining Board members in the process. The Board is utterly in the dark as to what actually goes on. The President/ED has never even met any of the dogs, yet she consistently refuses to listen to fosters and volunteers about the dogs' needs and temperaments. I committed myself to this rescue completely for over five years- I gave more money and time than anyone else- but as soon as I started to question how it was run, I was forced out and blackballed. This is absolutely devastating for the numerous dogs that will probably languish in cages for the rest of their lives and the wonderful adopters that will never get a call back and the dogs that missed out on those homes. I am broken-hearted.

He had several issues that needed to be worked on,fffr was always there when i had questions. They really care about the dogs, they go out of their way for a dog.they have been known to take in dogs that nobody wants to help ,they have a wonderful lady named jenn and her husband that work with impossible dogs and what a difference in a few days they become a different dog. Our family did Foster to Adopt as we were unsure if a dog would fit into our busy lifestyle. It didn’t take long for us to say YES to bringing Buddy into our lives forever. The Furry Friends staff were amazing, they provided us with everything we needed in the beginning to take care of him even having a trainer come out to help us with some puppy behavior. I adopted from Furry Friends Rescue several years ago. Everyone was very welcoming and supportive as we worked through the adoptions. Our little girl was rescued from a hoarding situation and came to us as a scared girl. FFFR was there with us as we helped her work through her / our issues together. They were incredibly supportive and was always available to us when we needed them. If you want to adopt a rescue, this is your group! You won't be alone. Our first rescue dog came from Furry Friends Foster & Rescue. They were so easy to work with. We weren’t sure if our other dog was going to allow another dog into our home. At first the dogs were both unsure of each other so we decided and Furry Friends agreed that we should try fostering him for at least a week to see if it could work out. Within a few days they were best friends and today still remain best friends. The love & care Furry Friends gives their dogs are amazing. I would highly recommend them to anyone that asks. We lost our dog, Cody, four years ago. We decided we wanted to help rescue dogs and found Furry Friends Foster and Rescue. We started out as a temporary foster for Breelyn (now Abby) and then decided to foster her till she was adopted. Well, she stole our hearts and we are what's known as a foster fail. We certainly did not fail to adopt this loving girl and bring her into our home for good. Furry Friends has been there for us the whole journey with her. Abby tested negative for heartworm when they brought her into their group and four days after adopting her she tested positive. Furry Friends paid for her treatment and was with us the whole time, any time we needed them. Thank you for your caring and standing behind every pet and family!

A few years ago we fostered several dogs. I was tired of goodbyes. I promised that the next dog we got we’d adopt if we worked it out with him/her. And we did finally, after medical needs were taken care of, which were competently scheduled and executed. After we adopted we had some behavioral issues we were able to address with them. Calvin has traces of those but still a great dog. We are grateful to Furry Friends for their service.

Furry Friends Foster & Rescue Inc is an incredible organization to work with at any capacity. They very recently saved four incredibly deserving dogs that were facing losing their lives due to human error & unfair labels. The rescue met these dogs with no judgement, completely open minded, & found incredible, experienced fosters to commit to caring for these dogs until they could be adopted. Without the incredible willingness of this organization & their ability to look past labels & make their own judgements these dogs would have lost their lives. All 4 dogs are in the appropriate foster homes & thanks to the opportunity given to them by Furry Friends Foster & Rescue, they are proving their labels to be inaccurate & thriving majorly in the successful environments they have been placed in.

He is seriously the best, I’m sure everyone says that about their pup but it’s true for Auggie. He may have a million allergies and is always goofy. He may wake me up multiple times in the middle of the night so I can cover him with a blanket. He may think that everyone would like him on their lap and needs cuddles. I have been volunteering with Furry Friends for approximately four years now. I have fostered dogs, conducted home visits, screened applications, performed "meet and greets" and adoptions, pulled dogs from the pound, picked up and delivered supplies, taken dogs to vet appointments, etc. Every person I have met through "FFFR" has been absolutely dedicated to the mission. The dogs always come first. There is full transparency in every aspect, and every effort is always made to do what is best for the dog. FFFR always stands by their dogs. Even if it has been years, Furry Friends will take a dog back if necessary. Dogs are never rushed into homes. If they need medical care, they get it. If they need extensive training, they get it. If they need to work with a behaviorist for a year, they do! Furry Friends takes the dogs other rescues leave behind: the pit bulls, the seniors, and the ones with behavioral and/or medical issues. It is all about the dogs, all the time.

I have worked with quite a few rescues over my 20+ years in the community, and Furry Friends has the most integrity, as a whole, of any group I have worked with. I am very proud to be a volunteer, and look forward to many more years with FFFR.

My wife and I have been doing Rescue for the last 19 years. We handled small breeds mostly Min Pins and terriers. The rescues we have associated with for one reason or another have become insolvent for one reason or another. We are in it for the dogs.

We found Furry Friends by happenstance while doing a home check for Rescue. We were impressed with what we saw. Not only was this an organization well founded on principle, it was financially sound, had superior leadership and most of all it is mission centered. Furry Friends not only cares for its wards it goes above and beyond for them. Need medical treatment done. Need bedding, toys or supplies done. Transportation to or from medical appointments done. Need additional professional training for a ward done. Our wards come first, last and always.

This is an organization to be proud of and one that can be trusted. We have been proud to be full time volunteers for the last few years as our sole home.
Our wards come first, our adopters become part of our family.

We invite you to come join us.

Most other rescues would have wash their hands with him and put him down but NOT FFFR they worked tirelessly raising thousands of dollars to make sure that he got a second chance at life! He had his heart surgery and now is living a happy and healthy life because of them!
I will only adopt from them in the future! They stand behind there dogs 100%! ♥️

This is an incredibly well-organized and compassionate group. A wide network of volunteers work tirelessly to help all the animals that can be helped and match the right dog with the right owner and/or foster home. All dogs receive stellar medical treatment as well as caring personal attention (such as car rides for those dogs who are in boarded situations). This is a great organization for dogs and for dog lovers.

FFF&R has been wonderful to us! Leslie and Ray were especially patient, attentive and careful to be sure their pup went to the right home which is certainly helpful for me as a newcomer in my first foster-to-adopt situation. While we get to know our newest addition, I have contacted Leslie with questions and she always replies immediately and with thoughtful solutions, even though I know she is extremely busy! I lucked out finding FFF&R, and recommend them to anyone seeking to a foster or rescue pup.

I've been associated with this rescue close to 5 years now I have fostered and adopted from them. They are very professional and supportive to their volunteers and fosters. The rescue team truly loves their animals and work hard to fine a home that is well suited for them. They stand behind all their animals no matter how much time goes by they will always take their dog back into the rescue if a situation arises.

I've been associated with FFFR since we opened our doors in 2014. I first was a volunteer, then joined the Board as secretary - then as vice president - and, after our President's death in 2016, as President of the rescue. All of our volunteers are committed and dedicated - not only to our rescue in particular, but to animal rescue in general. They make my job easy! Without those volunteers and an absolutely wonderful group of Board members, we would not be able to do half of what we do to help dogs in urgent need in CT. It is my true honor and a real blessing to be associated with this amazing group of fellow rescuers! We help dogs with serious medical issues, dogs with terrible pasts who need time, patience, and training, dogs with only hours or days remaining unless they find rescue - the ones who need us the most. We collaborate whenever possible with other CT rescues and rescuers. I am thankful every day to be able to participate in FFFR!

Furry Friends Foster and Rescue truly stands by their dogs. I happened upon them when I was looking to foster again via a Facebook post. Before I was approved to foster Ivan, I had to go through the complete process of a home visit, reference and vet checks as well as a phone interview with Leslie. The process alone was well worth it and demonstrated a level of care and commitment you don’t see from rescues every day. Since then I’ve fostered and volunteered for FFFR and I don’t plan to stop. I cannot say enough about their love for these animals.

The organization shows a passion for rescue dogs and an enthusiasm for the mission that inspires others. The persistence and energy in getting the needs of these beautiful four-legged friends met has, I am certain, contributed to the happiness of many of these animals. Dogs are treated with warmth and welcome and care.

Furry Friends helped us through a difficult time when we were forced to re-home our beloved dog Summer. They found her a wonderful home and made a devastating decision just a little easier. Thank you for your hardwork and for taking in our sweet girl!

My husband and I worked with several fosters from Furry Friends until my fur baby from Golden Rescue passed. At that point I could no longer accept saying good bye. We received a Shi Tsu, Peanut, whom we renamed Calvin. He had Lyme, eye and ear infections that needed to be cleared. Finally he was neutered, and we could say we were a foster fail. He’s been a wonderful companion, though needs calming for thunder storms and and fireworks. His being a very cuddly lap dog helps. We are very impressed with Furry Friends professionalism and support. Calvin is part of our home and our lives. He has lots of other dogs to bark at, plus kids, school buses and of course, the postal carrier. I can see how Shih Tsu protected, and were pampered by, Chinese Emperors. We are grateful to Furry Friends for making this fur baby available to us.

My family of 7 are all HUGE animal lovers! We have a house full of well-loved pets; several of which have been rescued from less than lovely situations. We came across a dog in desperate need on the Furry Friends site, but the dog was already snatched by another rescue. However, there were several other dogs in need of a loving home, especially a pit bull named Charlie Brown. At first we were a bit hesitant because we didn't know anything about pit bulls, (other than what you hear on the news), but Furry Friends assured us that they spend considerable time with each dog in order to know the dog and match them with the perfect family. They said Charlie Brown was wonderful, so we gave it a whirl...My other dogs we great with him and "Charles" was super sensitive to my geriatric dog. Charles, by far has proved to be the most loving dog I've ever had...and I've had plenty! Furry Friends is passionate about matching the right dog with the right family for everyone's benefit!

We have a 4 year old Rottweiler which two years ago we were looking for a friend for him. My husband and I wanted to give another dog a home that needed one. We were looking for a female dog that was older than our boy hoping that it would be a better match for him. We had fostered another dog that was the same age and a puppy both that were not good for him. I had come across adorable photo of Rosey a pit-bull from Furry Friends Foster and Rescue. I fell in love and so did my husband. We went though the process and sadly she was adopted to another family. Not to long after we received a call saying that Rosey was not a good match for their family, true to their word Furry Friends always takes back the dog if the situation does not work out. When we were called it was July 4th, and we said yes bring her over!! Furry Friends had done the meet and greet and the integration with the dogs. It was not to long after that Stryker and Rosey have become best of friends. Shortly there after I started volunteering for the rescue myself. I found that it has given me purpose and filled my heart. I am now on the board of directors and am the executive assistant to the president and the executive board member., all because I had seen a cute photo of my now dog and the wonderful experience I had adopting from them.

I adopted my fur baby from Furry Friends. He was absolutely my best friend. When he got sick furry friends helped raise money for his medical bills. Since adopting my baby I started volunteering any way I can. This is absolutely an amazing rescue. This rescue is my second family.

FURRY FRIENDS is a fantastic organization that plays a big part in rescuing local animals. The animals they take in consist of both healthy as well as several that are in need of expenaive medical care. Its one of the most organized rescues that I have ever dealt with. It is because of them many animals are alive today and living as loved family members.
