I emailed this adoption agency mid April when I lost my dog. I saw a dog that I was interested in, but realize that I was going to be on vacation and a lot of things going on so I decided to wait until July to pursue happily The dog Melo was still available and had exactly the traits that I was looking for.

We emailed the contact person and asked if we could meet the dog on our way back from vacation. We were told that we could we obtain the address and made a trip to visit the dog.
We met the foster family and trainer and met the dog immediately bonded and fell in love with the dog.

We went home and completed the application. I used my mobile phone to complete the information required.

I received confirmation that the application was received and in a few days I received an email setting up a telephone interview.

After a 40 minute conversation with the interviewer on speakerphone with both my husband and myself, We hung up confident that we would be able to adopt this dog.

A week later, I received an email saying our adoption was denied. The reason given was that in their opinion, the level of energy and stubbornness would not suit us.

The dog that I lost was the same exact breed same size same age when I got him same energy level. The dog previous to that was also a large Young energetic dog.

I emailed back asking that somebody called me to elaborate on this and certainly be able to give me a better reason than this.

I also called both the foster family and the telephone interviewer left a message asking them to call me back so that I could find out what exactly was the reason.

I never got a return phone call and I sent a follow-up email asking that my questions from my previous email be answered.

After A few days I received a phone call from the Director, who informed me that she had been dealing with dogs since the 1950s.

In any event it came down to the reason that we were declined is because we did not crate any of our dogs. we had trainers and went to obedience classes, but never had the need for a crate. She said that the telephone interview had said that we were emphatically “no” on the crate training. I explained that we did not have a crate, but that we could get a crate.

There was also a question on the application hit the wrong button when I explained that and I asked if I could change the application, I was told by the Director no that I would not be able to adopt any dogs from their site. This is the initial email said that they would keep my application on file in case I wanted to adopt any other dogs on their site.

I explained to the Director that I would get a crate as I explained previously, and was told by her that in her experience people that say that they are going to do things don’t always do them.

They never checked my references. They never checked my home. We have been responsible dog owners since the 80s and have multiple dogs at one time.

The denial letter said that their decision was based on my best interest as well as the dogs. Best interest. My question to the Director was how do they know what my best interest is. They don’t know me they don’t know what kind of dog owners we are they don’t know what kind of love and affection we give our dogs.

Bottom line, it’s clear that they did not want to give that dog to us, and I can’t believe that it’s a matter of not having a crate at that time that would have such an impact, even after saying, we would get a crate. The question that I answered incorrectly was simply a mistype as it asked if we would agree to have obedience classes. I explained that we had trainers and obedience classes and for me to have incorrectly checked that was a mistake, at this point, it was unable to be corrected.

She informed me that they do not allow prospective adopters to meet the animals until after the adoption process has been completed. I then asked if the dogs were taken to any adoption events, at which she replied yes of course so I said what about the people that meet the dogs there, are they not allowed to adopt the dogs that they meet?

I am terribly heartbroken , disappointed and angered by this entire process. We have never ever been denied an adoption.

The director asked me if I wanted the name and phone number of their attorney.
She also said that I was trying to slant my arguments, whatever that means.

I’m sad that I have to continue to search for the perfect dog to adopt after we were certain we met our new family member.

I’ll not be donating to this charity. I will, however, attend their adoption events.
