Mission: The Friends of the Library, Quince Orchard Chapter, was founded in 1999 specifically to support the Quince Orchard Library in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Our mission is to enrich our local community library by raising funds to enhance library programs, creating and promoting involvement in the library's community events, and celebrating and sharing the cultural diversity of our community. For example, Montgomery County local government will provide staff and basic funding for children's programs; however, it may not have extra money for adult programming, art, extra periodical subscriptions, or enhanced landscaping. We recently funded a Harry Potter Day for over 150 children, purchased a DVD for a Korean-language film festival, paid for a band for Hispanic Heritage Day, and funded an innovative Head Start program, among other items. We have annually cosponsored and paid for a community festival at the library to kick off the summer reading program. The festival attracts over 2,500 patrons annually. Our goal is to ensure the library can meet the diverse needs of its patrons and attract nontraditional library users.
