Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Environment, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection, Pollution Abatement & Control

Mission: Friends of the Earth fights to defend the environment and champion a healthy and just world. We are the U.S. voice of the world’s largest federation of grassroots environmental groups, with a presence in 75 countries. To accomplish our mission, Friends of the Earth is working at the nexus of environmental protection, economic policy and social justice to fundamentally transform the way our country and the world value people and the environment.

Results: For a relatively small organization, Friends of the Earth has an impressive legacy. Through our more than 45-year history, we have provided crucial leadership in work that resulted in landmark environmental laws, precedent-setting legal victories and the exposure of political and corporate malfeasance. Recent accomplishments • Keeping fossil fuels in the ground. In early 2016, we won a major victory in our campaign to keep fossil fuels in the ground when the Obama administration announced it is putting a moratorium on new coal leasing on public lands. This big win will help keep our public lands safe from fossil fuel extraction and could signal a new era of putting the American people ahead of fossil fuel industry profits. • Blocking approval of a dangerous pipeline. Friends of the Earth led the effort to expose corruption and pro-oil bias in the State Department’s review of the Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline. Our work (and that of allies) generated pressure on the Obama administration, forcing it to hit the reset button in 2012 and order a new review of the pipeline’s potential environmental impacts. As of January 2016, President Obama had denied the permit for the pipeline to proceed. • Keeping GMO seafood off grocery store shelves. Thanks to work from Friends of the Earth and allies, more than 60 major grocery store chains, including Safeway, Kroger and Whole Foods, have made commitments not to sell genetically engineered salmon. Together the companies comprise 9,000 individual stores across the country. • Reducing air pollution from ships. In August 2012, after working for nearly a decade to reduce air pollution from ships, we were rewarded for our efforts when the Emission Control Area (ECA) went into effect for North America. The EPA expects the reduction in smog created by the new rule to improve the health of people living near the coasts and save thousands of lives. Since then, we have worked to strengthen and protect the ECA by intervening in the state of Alaska’s attempt to challenge the rule. • Opposing the first GMO apple. In 2013, thanks to our campaign against the GMO apple, McDonald's and Gerber have confirmed that they have no plans to sell or use it. The Arctic Apple® would be the first GMO apple on the market. • Forcing climate impacts to be considered when the government lends money. In early 2012, we successfully held a World Bank proposal at bay to exempt a new lending program from 25 social and environmental safeguards and policies. As a result of our advocacy, and that of our allies, today, projects with the highest social and environment risk are excluded from this new program. • Protecting Puget Sound from ship dumping. In 2012, we achieved a ban on cruise ships dumping wastewater while docked at the Port of Seattle. The ban will protect the people and marine habitats of Puget Sound.

Programs: Outreach & membership program - the outreach program educates members and activists as well as the greater public through online action alerts, print and online advertising, mailings and quarterly newsmagazine (to donors), monthly e-newsletters, as well as social media sites like facebook, twitter, youtube, and flickr. The team also seeks opportunities to educate the public through tv and radio interviews.

climate & energy - the climate & energy team promotes clean energy and conservation and fights to end our dependence on dirty, harmful sources of energy including coal, oil, nuclear, and biofuels. Current campaigns seek to prevent the extraction of tar sands oil and its transport through the u. S. , to phase out our use of dangerous nuclear reactors, and to end federal incentives for the production of corn ethanol and other biofuels that raise food prices while harming the environment.

economic policy - also known as "economics for the earth," the economic policy team aims to create a more environmentally sustainable and socially just world by transforming financial and economic systems. Activities include efforts to end subsidies for polluting industries, making polluters pay for the damage they cause and encourage investments in clean alternatives. It works to alter lending practices at large financial institutions that fund polluting activities and harm communities in developing countries. The team also seeks to educate the public and policymakers about the environmental dangers and undemocratic nature of trade agreements, such as the trans-pacific partnership. During fiscal year 2014, the team engaged in efforts to raise awareness of the need for campaign finance reform, an attempt to prioritize the voices of voters over corporations. This team also works to address the root causes of forest destruction through its campaign against landgrabs, forests and finance, and its work to challenge forest carbon offsets.

"Friends of the Earth" is great because it stays on top of many issues that relate to the health and livability of the planet. They sponsor many petitions which deal with environmental health.

Friends of the Earth gives voice to people who care about our environment. They closely monitor the environmental policies of our government and of corporations. They create petitions for people to sign which oppose bad environmental policies. Then Friends of the Earth submits those petitions to the source of the bad policies. They are tireless in their efforts to defend and protect our environment. They also provide a vehicle for people to support pro-environmental political candidates. They are an excellent nonprofit organization!

Friends of the Earth make my heart-felt passion of trying to do something about our environment, our beautiful water and land and animals and life within nature, which we all share, a daily reminder, a daily dose of Do Something! I have small donations automatically taken out monthly, and sign petitions almost daily, and contribute more when I have the funds to do so. I feel better knowing they are taking action for me, because I am disabled and unable to march and protest, when I actually want to. I want to help, because without water, clean air, wildlife, safety for our children, and their children, what is left? anishinaabe-bimaadizi vai s/he lives the Indian way

I am a supporter of FoE. I believe that Global Warming will be the death of most of us if continued. Most Governments do too little to stave this off. I want more to understand this. The majority of folk seem not to understand their own role in reducing their own carbon footprint eg reducing meat consumption, recycling all they can do, Using the other side of a discarded sheet for printing things that have no reason to object to rubbish on the back for example, Giving to others such paper waste for reuse. A significant number of us put every bit of rubbish in their black bin because they cannot bother to re-cycle. Many do not have a compost heap that keeps carbon from becoming CO2. Do not burn rubbish again keeping carbon bound
Having solar and heat panels on the roof to reduce fossil fuel based electricity down.
I support FoE for such reasons
I had a pollution monitor at my roadside tree for two weeks to urge pollution reduction.

With so many environmental and civil rights issues needing urgent attention its hard to know where to turn and what to do. Friends of the Earth puts it all together for me. I know any support I offer is put to the best use and that FOE staff will be doing the hard work of protecting all that I love and cherish.

Friends of the Earth stands for and fights for all the things I hold dear to my heart - the Earth, her waters, her four-legged people, standing people, flying people, the air that surrounds her, and the ground that rests upon her mantle.
I have trusted Friends of the Earth for years to fight for my heart's interests. And I will continue to do so.

As a result of the Friends of the Earth very effective campaign to save bees, I planted a large pollinator garden last year. This had many side effects in addition to hosting bees and butterflies. Another effect was that I became a dedicated gardener, and I must say that gardening is a very effective stress reducer and a wonderful way to exercise my 83 year old body. Weeding and planting and digging and lugging soil around and composting and shredding beat any exercise class I've ever been in. Yet another effect was noticing how climate change has had an effect on plants. In this, my second year of the garden, nearly every plant bloomed later than was expected, thus the pollinators had less time this summer to pollinate. I checked with a master gardener who said that the blooming season was indeed later than usual this year. Gardeners notice changes and this can be useful all around. I am grateful to Friends of the Earth for bringing attention to the plight of bees and all of their other good work at a time when we need it most.

It is so important to love, and save the earth and all that live in and on it. I feel that Friends of the Earth does just that. It is a pleasure to donate to this charitable org. They do what they can and in turn I try to do what I can.

When Friends of the Earth (FoE) endorsed Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Presidential Primary Election, I was convinced of FoE's steadfast advocacy for our health and the environment. As a member, I have appreciated the opportunities to participate in online activism and contribute to some of the many victories and continuing campaigns. However, I would like to meet other members in person, but haven't had an opportunity to do so.

Sure it's easy to click on stars but the thing that matters the most is of course the ability to make a true effect on this planet. Friends of the Earth is a perfect amalgam of environment vs politics and treats them equally as important. And the reason I fund them is due to the fact that they are genuine they move and shake things to get a positive objective and they really care about people and this planet. They are not afraid to step up to and ask to step off big oil, and of course the train wreck that is trump. They are valuable assets to the preservation of this life and the people who exist here. They are worth so much more but speaking personally I give as much as I can to movements that I have tangible evidence make a difference. This is a very deserving and empathic group. It 's my honor to help them.

Friends of the Earth alerts me with important information on vital environmental issues and their political factors that enable me to confidently take action with my legislators. I admire and have supported their essential work without reservation -- until my ability to donate to them and other related caused recently became exhausted -- but I hope to renew donations before long. I really like the work Friends of the Earth does to try to save this planet. I did not realize until recently that they were part of/connected with the Democratic party. For that reason, they fall below expectations. If they were an independent environmental action group I would have more faith in them.

Both parties in this Country take money from the fossil fuel industry, which puts us in a sad state of affairs. If the Democratic party divested from and did not accept money from the fossil fuel industry, I would have a better view of this organization.

What can I say? This group is working to protect our precious Mother Earth and doing a good job of it. The current government administration is trying to destroy this planet for profit and Friends of the Earth are fighting back. Thank you for your care.

I receive emails from Friends of the Earth regularly. I'm happy to sign their petitions aimed at protecting the planet. They keep track of current issues around the world that could impact the environment, pollinators like bees, our air & water. They are an organization doing good & deserve recognition for their efforts while the Trump administration seeks to destroy it all. I'm happy to donate & support them.

I am so grateful to Friends of the Earth for bringing the diminishing honey bee (and other pollinators) to the forefront! In MD we are fighting to have neonicinotides (sp) banned. ME Friends of the Earth helped with this campaign. We did not get this Bee Killer banned, but we did get plants using this pesticide labeled. The fight to ban it completely continues...

I support Friends of the Earth because they stand up to the wrong and detrimental policies of this current administration. Bees are what provide us with food, clean air and energy programs help keep our lungs clean and all their programs are to assist our environment to allow us better lives.
