When you see the many lives transformed because of this program, you get hooked.... what started as a random volunteer thing for me has turned into a full time passion! When someone says "Maybe if this dog can be saved by getting a second chance, so can I" or having a dog to care for has saved their lives, THAT is a powerful thing. I've been a dog trainer for 30+ years and I KNOW the impact a dog can have in someone's life, but this takes it to a whole other level. I'm honored to be a part of Paws In Prison and you will be too. Take a look at the Wall of Second Chances video below for a small window into the impact your support has.
We are a very small group making a BIG impact. This organization truly makes a difference - Saving more than dogs. Over 600 dogs have been placed in furever homes. Over 1,000 women inmates impacted. These women learn valuable life skills such as patience, teamwork, responsibility, communication skills, self-confidence, accountability, and empathy. Some have gone on to become vet assistants, groomers, dog trainers, owners and managers of boarding facilities. Their transformation has a ripple effect for future generations when they return back into society as better mothers, productive employees, and strong women who give back to their communities. Therefore, the success of this unique program affects us all! I am honored to be a board member.
A simply amazing program that keeps giving back. As the women get out that it helped changed their lives, they turn around and donate their time to helping more!

This non-profit is simply amazing! My life was drastically changed nearly 3 years ago when I myself was placed in this program. It is a program that not only saves the lives of dogs that truly deserve a second chance, but also in return says the lives of the ladies involved in it! This program teaches the ladies and dogs to love, trust and truly to come alive. I have seen so many lives change due to this program and I am so blessed to have been and continue to be a part of it!
I have adopted 2 dogs from Paws in Prison, volunteered for Friends of Paws in Prison and currently sit on the board of directors of Friends of Paws in Prison. The work this organization does to rehab both dogs and the ladies who train them is on a higher level than you can imagine. My dogs have brought us so much joy and the care this program brings to the dogs is exemplary. Additionally, the inmates who participate in this program are provided with skills that will serve them in all aspects of their lives when they are released.
This is a a wonderful nonprofit which is one of my favorites, in part, because it does double duty helping both people and animals! The board is a dedicated group who work with a shoestring budget to carry out their mission, trying different methods of fundraising to support this worthwhile cause - participating in events in the surrounding areas like PetFest, & hosting silent auctions. It is a challenging cause because, as one board member remarked, people/corporations don’t want to donate to prisons. They valiantly fight an uphill battle and never give up! I love supporting this worthy endeavor to help women inmates find hope for their future in the helping hands of Paws In Prison, and saving a loving canine destined for euthanasia. They really need and deserve every dime they can get! Please choose them!
I have adopted 2 amazing pups from Paws in Prison. This program does amazing things for the dogs and the lady inmates.
My dog, I adopted from pawsinprison, is the best dog I ever had. The program is wonderful and so is my dog. Lucky are the dogs that are in the pawsinprison program.
Paws In Prison brought the biggest joy in my life. We adopted an angel named Judy about three years ago. She was found on the streets in Lockhart Texas, had heart worms and was worn out by life. She was taken in by PIP and learned tricks and started to learn about human love. We are forever grateful for the program that gave our sweet Judy a chance at a happy and healthy life!
This organization makes a difference in the lives of women and their families, the dogs and their new owners, and most importantly, our communities.

My name is Jennifer Keaton and I became the President of Friends of Paws in Prison in September, 2019.
I have been involved in Animal Rescue for over 25 years. I started in Raleigh, NC when I adopted my first German Shepherd as an engaged, young professional. I loved my big boy, Laker, and helped him recover from abuse. Eventually, he became a symbol of the Rescue, a gentle giant that would attend dog and car wash fundraisers with his leash secured to my belt loop.
I committed myself to that rescue and became Vice President, Treasurer, and foster home until I moved away, pregnant with my first two-legged baby. I took a hiatus from active animal rescue as I raised my two girls in Portland, Oregon and Boston. We collected another German Shepherd, Berlin, and then adopted Hannah from Austin German Shepherd Rescue.
When we moved to Austin in 2007, I picked my passion for rescue up again. I fostered dogs and cats for Austin Pets Alive. I became a volunteer neo-natal kitten feeder at Austin Pets Alive in 2012 and became a trainer in 2014. This year will be me 8th season in the nursery. I now foster for Thundering Paws and we have adopted out over 55 animals to date.
I became involved with Paws in Prison after Hannah died and I found Strait on petfinders.com in 2017. Strait is a plush coat German Shepherd that Machelle, the Executive Director of Paws in Prison, found wandering the streets of Lockhart. Machelle named him after George Strait during her country music phase. Strait is now a kitten-whisperer and helps us raise cats to become dog-friendly and up for adoption!
Machelle and I became friends and I loved the mission of Paws in Prison. I, of course, supported the animal rescue arm but was passionate about the component of empowering women too. I started helping with fundraising and getting food donations, etc. Eventually, I was invited to be on the Board. Machelle and I communicated almost every day. The last thing she said to me before she died was to consider Jeri Muhich for the Board, which was sage advice.
Jeri’s now our Vice President. She and I have worked really hard on the reorganization and fundraising and are excited to be a part of the next chapter with the passion of the new Board and trainers. We have big goals and with your help (time, money or both) you can help us “Save More than Dogs”!
I have a somewhat unique experience with this program as I am both an adopter and a board member. My experience back in 2017 as an adopter was remarkable. From the minute my application was received until my pup was placed in my arms I felt valued and seen. I was given many personal details about my pup to help her transition more easily to our household.
I particularly cherish the handwritten letters that I received from her trainers. And I appreciated how the administrators checked in periodically to see how we were doing.
Now, serving as Adoption Coordinator, I have an even greater appreciation for this unique program that is so much more than a dog rescue group. There are many moving parts that contribute to the successful placement of a dog.
The inmate trainers are educated by our professional trainer and Executive Director. They, in turn, educate each other in how to train the dogs. Each phase is carefully monitored until the dog is deemed ready to graduate from our program. This is a cause for great celebration among our female inmates.
When a potential adopter applies, and goes through all their steps, I have the privilege of matching them with a dog. A successful adoption is a joyous thing!!
Absolutely the best nonprofit around! Training women to train dogs using only positive reinforcement techniques. Then adopting these fabulous dogs into carefully vetted homes. Helps the women; helps the dogs.
More women, more dogs, more happy families; such a happy circle!
We adopted our first dog from here in 2017; our next dog will come from this program!
I saw a dog on Petfinders that looked exactly like my Australian Shepherd who had passed away a couple of years before. I immediately called about the dog and the Paws director asked me to come to the prison where the dog was being trained. She later invited my husband and our dog Niya, to make sure the new dog fit into the family. Happily, he did and is a joy. I appreciated so much how she took such care to make sure that the adoption was a win for all of us.
We have two precious dogs from this program and I am a volunteer on the Board. Our two dogs fill our lives with love, laughter and so much joy. I have had the privilege of getting to know several of the Lockhart Ladies and have heard many of their stories. I have also had the honor of helping facilitate adoptions. Because of my experience with this program, I have become a better person myself, learning so much about the miracle of what unconditional love and caring can accomplish in the lives of others, in both humans and dogs!
Today I went to the Coleman Unit for prison ministry through my church. When pulling into the parking lot the 'paws' yard was full of pups and their handlers! I am a dog person and this brought such joy to my heart. Additionally, I give a financial class at Coleman and had the honor to have some handlers in my class and have had the chance to talk to them about their pups. These women give their 'all' to these pups in training and getting them ready for their forever homes.

Thank you so much for your great review. I love that you are sharing the love of God with the women in prison. They are amazing ladies who are changed profoundly by the animal/human connection.

What a wonderful program for humans and dogs alike…. Our friends adopted from here and she is the most wonderful companion…. You literally cannot find a better place to meet your new best friend ❤️.
I adopted two dogs from Paws in Prison and have been a supporter of them for over a decade. Not only are my dogs amazing but the program is the epitome of second chances. They inmates are given a second chance to rehabilitate through the program and through the love of the dogs. Any dog I get in the future will be from Paws in Prison!!!!!

I have been following this non profit for over 10 years. About 3 years after learning about Paws in Prison, I was able to adopt my dogs from the program. If it weren't for the support they receive from Friends of Paws in Prison, so many inmates and dogs would not benefit from the amazing work of this program. This is a win win win for all involved:)!!!!! I was so impressed with this organization that I later became a board member of Friends of Paws in Prison.
I wish everyone could meet my precious Lyle Lovett! He is a little pistol, and so hilarious! His name in the program was Spike because, even though he was only about 8 lbs, he was fearless!
The ladies at PIP, including Machelle, trained my little boy to be able to live his best life! And he is!
I have communicated with several Board members and their enthusiasm and loving kindness toward the ladies and the fur babies goes above and beyond!
I am pleased and privileged to write about my experiences. Thank you!

My fur baby came from the PIP program! I was so blessed by this program (Machelle ♥️) and by my fur baby Lyle Lovett! I can’t say enough good about all of the rehabilitation that takes place at PIP! Thank you PIP for all that you do!
We adopted our sweet Beanie from Paws in Prison in 2022! We could not recommend the experience more from start to finish! Communication went well, our home visit and prison visit was lovely, the care and attention to Beanie was so evident! He was clean, chipped, vaccinated and well trained! We adored the letters his trainers left us about how to take care of him and what he meant to them and will cherish them forever! If we ever get another dog we will absolutely be going to Paws In Prison!

FoPiP 05/17/2023
Erika, thank you for giving our Beanie boy such a wonderful home! We see your photos on our Friends of Paws in Prison Support Group Facebook page - he goes everywhere with you! JM
I can't say enough positive words about this program to do it justice. I'm one of the many lives it has helped save. I did 5yrs in 1C The Dog Dorm at the Lockhart Correctional Unit. This program not only gives the ladies a skill to use for work upon release. It gives the Death Row Pups a chance at parole and a forever family. The program also gives us ladies a purpose to wake up every morning and continue living in a very deep dark place in our life. The dogs unconditional love sparks a light and begins the healing process for the ladies to be able to overcome there past. An as they move through the program with there dog you see a new woman and a very happy dog begin to blossom. It also gave me the true link in my life that keeps me together, DAKOTA JAKE!!!!

FoPiP 05/17/2023
Thank you for this great review. You and Dakota were made to be together! Thank you for giving him his forever home.
This program saved my life! I was in the program for almost 2 years! The amazing transformation happened for me through the dogs I trained and the volunteers who inspired me! So grateful for this program!

A wonderful program which my daughter Lexie participated in. Taught her so much and such a positive learning experience. Great gear work!

Lexie is a precious and amazing young woman!
I admire your program mission and am very familiar with an ex-inmate that has recently gone on to make a difference in a lot more lives, as a direct result of this specific program. Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much for giving us a 5 star rating! Yes, the program is small but has a huge ripple effect on so many levels.
We adopted our sweet girl Piper from Paws in Prison because we strongly believe in their mission to help not only dogs, but the women who train them. As a criminologist and criminal justice professor, I love the rehabilitative focus of this program for the incarcerated women. Piper is an absolute JOY to have in our family. She loves our kids so much and follows them around everywhere, especially the baby. She and the other family dogs are the most adorable pack. They romp, play, and all sleep cuddled on our bed together at night. Piper thinks beds and couches are the best invention ever! She loves to run in our big backyard and climb up into the treehouse with our kids. She loves camping and has a blast taking hikes and looking for deer from the campsite. She also loves to chase grasshoppers. She hops after them!
She is fully potty trained, and thinks the doggy door is a blast to use for full speed zoomies into the backyard chasing her new best friend Gio (another Lockhart shelter dog we adopted from Atticus Rescue two years ago). She also walks on her leash beautifully and remembers all the tricks the Lockhart women taught her (sit, down, wait, shake, with me, sit pretty, raise the roof, who’s the best). She loves to show off her tricks! Thank you so much for allowing us to give Piper a forever home. We just love her so much!

Thank you so much for your 5 star review! Yes, your dogs are so much in love - a true success story among so many we hear.
This non-profit offers a win-win-win for dogs who need rescue, inmates who gain skills that can lead to employment, and loving families/individuals who get a trained dog.

Thank you so much Rosie for working with these ladies who work so hard with these precious dogs. We appreciate your 5 star review!
We adopted Jackson through PIP 13 years ago and I've been singing the praises of this program ever since. They did an amazing job training him and he's been the very best dog for our family. When we are ready to adopt again, we will definitely be looking at Paws in Prison.

FoPiP 07/04/2022
Thank you for adopting Biscuit after writing this wonderful review! Now Jackson has a special buddy as he lives out his days in your wonderful family. JM
I'm honored to be a small part of this organization. I am the Treasurer of Friends of Paws in Prison and I'm passionate about our mission. It's gratifying to see the results of the program with dogs finding furrever homes and the women gaining life skills.
A brilliant and compassionate charity, bringing love and connection to the most vulnerable and scared: women in prisons and abandoned dogs. This is one of my favorite all time charities for sure!

FoPiP 07/15/2021
You are so right - the stories we see coming out of this nonprofit are amazing and so multi-faceted - saving dogs, incarcerated women, adoptive dogs into loving families, and communities that receive these changed ladies back.
While on Petfinder I came across Paws in Prison. I read up on the program on their website and Facebook page and fell in love with the work they were doing. I filled out an application and adopted Shadow from the program in January. She's honestly the most amazing and funny dog. She is so friendly and well-behaved, she's also very socialized and up for anything.
Shadow loves people, anytime somebody makes eye contact with her (or sometimes even if they don't!) she wiggles her whole butt and has to go say hi. She just can't help herself. I think her love for people is a direct reflection of the love and care given to dogs in the Paws in Prison program. If they hadn't told me she was previously a stray, I would never believe it because of how friendly and social she is.
Did I mention how great the ladies did with her training? People frequently stop me on walks or come up to me at the park to comment on how good she is. I take no credit for that, the Paws in Prison people really know their stuff! Also, her tricks are a hoot, I've never had a dog who knew so many tricks before.
I also got a lot of detailed information from the ladies at Lockhart about Shadow's mannerisms, her schedule, her commands, and what she likes. The letters they wrote were so sweet, it's clear how much the ladies love working with the dogs. I definitely recommend this non-profit if somebody is looking to adopt.

FoPiP 07/15/2021
We're so happy Shadow and you found each other! Thank you so much for this review.

FoPiP 05/07/2023
Morgan we're so happy you brought Shadow into your home. We love hearing your feedback and appreciate your ongoing support of our mission.
I volunteered with Kairos Prison Ministry in Lockhart. The ladies in the Paws in Prison program were so thankful to be involved. Some of them were helping others for the first time in their lives. They were full of love and peace. One told me that she had lost thirty pounds. She had been plagued with depression her entire life, but it was now gone, due to Paws in Prison. The ladies in the program had a special joy and kindness about them. Paws in Prison is a wonderful program!

FoPiP 07/15/2021
Kairos is also a life saving program in the prison. Thank you so much for sharing this inspiring story!

FoPiP 05/07/2023
I know about Kairos and it is an amazing ministry - I've even baked cookies for the volunteers to take to the inmates! Thank you for taking the time to post this review.
About ten years ago some dear fiends of ours adopted their sweet dog, Muffin, from Paws in Prison. They told us all about how the program worked and what a wonderful experience it was for them all. They not only adopted one of the PIP dogs but also became big supporters of the program and in turn turned us and many others into supporters of the PIP program. The women in the PIP program not only transform these dogs, into loving trusting dogs, but also into good companions, for those lucky enough to adopt one of them. And in turn the women who train them are transformed as well. The more we've learned about the Paws in Prison program the more we love it. Flash forward about ten years and our friends adopted another dog from Paws in Prison. Another special pet named Tater. Muffin and Tater have found a wonderful loving and caring home.

FoPiP 07/15/2021
Annie, you are wonderful for posting this! Thank you!!!!
This program is a lifesaver for many of the girls. It is amazing how much you can learn from an animal if you just open your heart and mind. All of these girls are broken when they come in the program just like the dogs when they enter the shelter. These dogs trust no one neither do the ladies. They have been abused just like the ladies. The only positive factor is they are both still alive. When you learn to train you learn discipline. You learn about failure and how to overcome. You learn that it is okay to play and be childlike at times. Most of all you learn to laugh like you have never laughed. I have had quite a bit of experience with this program because I was one of those broken girls in that program. We have started construction on my new kennel just this week.

FoPiP 07/15/2021
Paige we love your honesty and authenticity. May God bless you on your life journey, through all the ups and downs.
We first became aware of Paws in Prison a few years ago when looking for a rescue dog. From our first encounter, my wife and I have been impressed beyond words with the program and what it accomplishes on a daily basis. The motto "saving more than dogs" is routinely manifest in the abundant success stories that permeate our society. The inmates, many of which found themselves in a pattern of behavior that led to their incarceration, find the means to break the pattern and change their lives. In the eyes of these dogs they see hope and love, returning these to all of us in society. Certainly the dogs are a beneficiary but the women are being saved as well. Roughly quoting an inmate from the documentary about Paws filmed at a graduation ceremony - "I figured if this dog was worth saving, maybe I was too." No stronger testimony about the program can be offered - amazing program.

FoPiP 04/07/2021
Thank you so much for such a wonderful review. Keep spreading the word about us! We're small but powerful.

FoPiP 07/15/2021
Thank you so much for sharing this comment. Yes, the stories that we hear from both the Lockhart ladies and the adoptive fur families keep us doing what we do for this amazing organization.
What an amazing program! We love our dog Maggie Mae who we adopted from them. She was so well trained by the wonderful trainers there. She is now a registered therapy dog.
Paws in Prison is such win/win, both for the dogs they save and the women who
are chosen to participate in the program. They learn skills that they can use on the outside, and learn to get along with the other ladies and work as a team.
I don’t think there are many charities that help both animals and people!

FoPiP 04/07/2021
Your Maggie Mae is so precious and we are thrilled she is continuing on the message to others of unconditional love. JMM
What great experience! We adopted Serin in 2009 from Paws in Prison. Machelle let us take him home to make sure it was a good fit for both of us. Serin never went back. Machelle helped make the transition seemless. Serin was crate trained and house trained. He also knew a few tricks. Serin is around 13 years old now and still going strong. We LOVE our wonderful pet trained behind bars!
We adopted our dog Sammy from Paws In Prison 4 years ago and support this program however we can because of what they do. They are helping both inmates and dogs get a second chance all in their free time and deserve all the support they can get.
We have 2 dogs from Paws in Prison. Our first dog was adopted 10 years ago when she was 3. Our second dog is now 3 and we've had him about 8 months. So the two dogs are 10 years apart in age. Our 13 year old female dog has never had an accident in our home! Our younger pup is adorable and entertains us with all his funny tricks -he's loaded with personality. Honestly, these two dogs are such a joy. What a great feeling it is to know they were saved from potential euthanasia since they came from kill shelters. I wish I could personally thank the inmates who gave them such wonderful training. This organization is doing wonderful things - saving dogs and giving the women inmates the opportunity to become better human beings.
We adopted Pippa from Paws in Prison. Pippa is the most well behaved dog we have ever met. She is obedient and a total people pleaser. Paws in Prison did a fantastic job with her training. Sit, Lay down, Stay, correctly walking with a leash, crate trained, high fives and house broken. Complete angel of a dog. If you watch the dogs at Paws in Prison they are very well behaved and when we came home all our neighbors commented how our dog almost never barks. I'm not sure all the other dogs are like that so you might want to ask but if you do ask you are going to get very detailed answers and the people at paws in prison are very nice and friendly. For first time dog owners who do not know how to train a dog to do the basics their adoption fee would be a good deal at twice the price!!!
We knew we wanted to adopt a dog, but when we heard about PIP it was exactly the place where we wanted to adopt from. We were lucky to visit the facility and do a meet and greet with several dogs to find one that worked with our female, dominate dog. The director at the time, Machelle, interviewed us to get an idea of what type of dog was a fit. We have had Ruby since January 2009. She came well trained, not just house trained but she knew fun tricks and manners. It helped that her trainers wrote letters about her personality, we felt so comfortable taking her home. We support PIP because it saves the dogs and the ladies in the prison. What a fantastic group! When we adopt again, we will do it with PIP again.
I’ve been watching the program for a year and am very impressed. I will soon be calling for a home visit to move the adoption along. They have been so willing to answer any question and provide feedback. I am looking forward to working closely with you for the perfect dog.
Paws in Prison is truly a family. The work they do is all genuine and whether you’re a volunteer, a trainer, or an adopter, you can feel it. PIP has the most heart I’ve ever seen in a non-profit. And even though they’re small, their amazing work affects so many lives in the process- human and K9. I’ll continue to help PIP in any way I can because I know how much of an impact they have on their community!
This program rescues dogs and women! Female inmates train dogs rescued from kill shelters. The dogs teach the women life skills of empathy, patience, responsibility and accountability and the inmates teach the dogs basic obedience training. Both heal each other. Communities received loving family pets and societies receive rehabilitated members.
