With no children or grandchildren in Savannah, sometimes it takes a while for me to find hidden gems like Oatland Island Wildlife Center. However, having now experienced the well marked trails, interesting flora and fauna in Savannah, and myriad activities like Harvest Days, Halloween Hikes,in-house birthday parties, Yoga with Wolves, etc. I am sold as to why Oatland Island Wildlife Center deserves accolades for its service to the community.
And the GiftShop will provide my long distanced grandchildren many outstanding unique gifts for Christmas and birthdays!
Fun Events, family outings, nature walks, visiting animals native to Southeast coastal GA, this place has it all! I've been visiting Oatland Island since 2010 when I moved to GA. We have a true gem in this place and hope to help support it's success for many generations to come.
In addition to watching my daughter be married at Oatland and the plaque near the Eagles site that commemorates where my husband ate lunch every week when he was alive, my 3 year old grandson I visit there at least once a week. It is our favorite place! Oatland Island is one of the most special parts of Savannah, certainly the MOST special in my heart!
When I moved to Savannah in August 2009, Oatland Island was the first local site we found. Since then we have taken hundreds of people from D.C. from where we came to Spain, Scotland, and Vancouver Island to this wonderful site to learn about the wildlife of Georgia...and just to be outside in a wonderful environment. In summer 2016 my grandchildren lived with us while their parents relocated to Alaska. We sent them to Oatland Wildlife Center Camp (this was the year of the baby wolves) where they had an amazing experience. This Memorial Day they visited after a long break due to Covid. Now teens they were thrilled to make a return visit to Oatland.
Our family loves Oatland island! Whenever we have visitors in town we take them to Oatland. Our oldest daughter attended their pre-k program & it was an excellent experience. We have attended several of their events & always love it!
Not only does Oatland provide a wonderful wildlife education for families and visitors of all ages, it also has given our Fiber Guild of the Savannahs a home. We meet there monthly in their wonderful fireplace room, we demonstrate our craft at their festivals and teach workshops to further an appreciation and understanding of the fiber arts in their spaces. We created a magnificent mighty oak for the lobby of the Welcome Center. Without this wonderful space, where would we be? I love Oatland Island Wildlife Center! It’s my happy place!!!
My children grew up on the trails at Oatland Island. We have so many memories there. It’s a wonderful place to be close to nature and close with your family as well. One of my children has passed away. I feel him there with me walking the trails when I am there. This is how great of an impression this amazing place can make on you and your family! Forever in my heart and forever thankful for Oatland Island!
Oatland Island Wildlife Center is not just a walk in the woods, the miles of trails educate, renew and inspire. Whether you've visited once or one hundred times there is always something new to see and learn. Get outside with a friend and/or family and let OIWC tell the story of of southeast Georgia native flora and fauna.

Friends of Oatland has always done such a tremendous job of supporting Oatland Island Wildlife Center! Their fundraisers have always been wonderful for the community and so much fun. The trails are maintained and improved all the time thanks to their efforts, and their fundraising has helped with disaster recovery from recent tornadoes and hurricanes! It is such a pleasure to walk the trails and visit the animal habitats. We love FOO!
